  1. Hi Ben

So looking forward to starting my journey on the exterior planking but still have a long way to go. I have been keeping a close eye on your photographs to help me with my build. Like you I plan to plank the wale as the first stage. I plan to use a very dark Caribbean wood called “Wamara”which is as close to black as i can find. I also plan to build a form to bend it on as it is the hardest wood available in the Caribbean and i know it will be a challenge. I am now having great success bending planks with the use of my commercial dryer and find i no longer need to soak the wood before bending but worry about adding heat to the existing model. Just completed 12,13, 14 and 15 internal planks but going on holiday for a few weeks so work will take a back seat. In New York tomorrow for 10 days so will be picking up “stuff” while there.

  2. Since modified the clamps to make them wider and shorter. The added length prevents them from spinning and the shorter depth allow me to draw lines above or below the clamp. It also just pulls the edge of the plank down against the frame instead of the whole plank. This is useful sometimes when you just want the edge pulled down

  3. I have decided to reduce the end at the stern on strake 7 to 5” instead of 10.5” so that i end below the top of stern keelson. I have noticed in one of the builds that the end was also reduced to two strakes treated similarly to the front of the stemson. Maybe i should have curved #6 more at the stern end!

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
