  1. Thank you ejhbuilder. I bought the material at a local fabric store. If I were to make sails again I would make them out of silkspan. There are a couple online methods to make sails out of silkspan and I think they would look great. You can make a rack to hang the silkspan on and then wet it. It will sag and dry that way giving you billowing sails.  Good luck.

  2. Thank you John. Yes it is built up . The main hull is solid bass wood. You form the three decks and glue them on to the main hull. I built this years ago for my son. I don't remember how long it took to build. I enjoy the build but give my models to my three sons all are in their fifties. After shaping the basswood hull I coated it with finishing resin and 1/2 oz fiberglass. ( two coats sanding in between each coat ) giving a great smooth finish. The fiberglass covers any grain that might stand out. I learned this from building scale RC aircraft.

About BlueJacket solid hull kits. The hulls are pre carved however, you have to do the final shaping  as the hulls are not perfect. I have made two of their solid hull models and both must be properly formed. Bass wood is almost as easy to work with as balsa, just harder wood. Bob
