  1. Allow me to introduce our model ship group to you. We are located in and around Rochester NY. We are a small group that was founded in late 2015. We have members in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Florida, and even one in Lisbon Portugal. We meet monthly and through the Zoom application we have been able to include our more distant members. You can learn more about us by visiting our web site modelshipwrightguildwny.org.

We have located you through the “Community” drop down function on the Model Ship World forum and are reaching out to you to explore your possible interest and participation in a lively and talented group of modelers from all walks of life.

Generally, sessions are structured with introductions of visitors, followed by a brief business segment and then we almost always have a central presentation topic or two ending with a show and tell of group models. The sessions usually last two hours.

So you are invited to visit us (via Zoom) this Fall and see what we are all about. You might find us interesting enough to join us on a more consistent basis. Please PM me back and I will put you on distribution for our Fall schedule when released.

We will not badger you beyond this outreach if you are not interested.

    Hoping to hear from you.

You mean  this red paint on the ports? :) It doesn't show much in the pictures once planked.

Hello there: The Winchelsea is stalled as I am remodeling an area on the first floor for my wife's art workings. Cabinets are in, template made for the desk top and I pickup the doors and drawer fronts today. I have yet to make the boxes for the 7 drawers. But all is not lost, Cheerful has grown on me once again. I started her up while I was gluing in Winne frames. I am actually working on deck furniture and planking as we speak. Bill and I are also working the PBR so that leaves me little time at the moment.

The other reason I haven't plunged into her is what you said to me sometime back. This modeling takes practice! I have learned so much with Cheerful that I want to get a bit farther with her before I jump into Winne. In doing Cheerful I see now where I could have done a better and those lessons and lessons to come will be applied to the big guy. On top of all that I had to have a hernia operation last week so I am a bit sluggish with all the above. The doctor opened me up pretty good and I am still walking around with about 11 staples to be removed next week!

      Joe

      Rustyj

Ah there always is so much to do. Making the area for your wife though time consuming is rewarding.
Nothing wrong with working on two at a time. I’ve switched back and forth on numerous occasions.
Yes the dreaded hernia surgery. Was there a couple of years ago. Hope you heal up soon.

      Take care Rusty

  3. Are you aware that Syren is in the works for a full POF of the Speedweell in AYC? I saw it recently in a meeting it is quite large. I think near or at 3/8 scale.

    Joe

    1. jfhealey

      jfhealey

I knew that Joe. I think it may be a while before it becomes available and I need a project to keep me going. Speedwell looks attractive because 1/48 POB plans are available with the Antscherl/Herbert book.

You are very lucky to have meetings to attend especially when you can get to see works in progress such as Syren's POF Speedwell. I'm a bit on my own down here in Cornwall UK. But I value these exchanges and all the build logs the more for that.

      Thanks for your message Joe.

Fred I do recall that Chuck Passaro of Syren ship models said that 1/4 scale was too small for him to produce such a model. I was surprised by that as he did not elaborate. It may have been related to laser machining. You may wish to contact David Anterschel. He is quite friendly and helpful. Hope I am not mixing the pot too much here..

Indeed nice to connect with you. I will be following what ever your next project is.

I think that is great.  I was looking for a local group a year or so ago, but it does not appear that one exists.

Happy to hear from you. Sometime in mid to late August I will be sending out the September agenda. It will be a preliminary as the agenda tends to firm up the closer we get to "air time". We had been meeting, pre Covid, on the 2nd Saturday of the month in person. During this uncertain era we moved to the 3rd Thursday of the month in the evening. We are still sorting that out. Standby for further developments.

Your personal info will remain private.

Nice to have you join us!

  5. Hello Ron!

I too am a member of Model Shipwrights of Western NY. Sam and I have been conversing about you over the holidays and I indicated that I would also try to reach out to you. His last reminder prompted this note. I am on MSW under the "handle" of Thistle17. I have always loved that day - sailer/racer almost had an opportunity to restore an original wooden one but didn't act fast enough on her. I now look back and muse "What was I thinking?"! I was then diverted from restoring a 17' Chris Craft Sportsman that I stumbled on at Cape Cod. Again I was pulled away from a head long plunge and lots of $$$$$ by one who knows better than me. Any ways I am now relegated to the work bench building models. Its safer and less expensive.

I am working on the Syren Cheerful and Winchelsea. I too have a MS model of Niagara sitting on the shelf waiting for ts turn. I might mention that one of our members has many pictures of her as he too has built this model. I think I can reach out to him to see if they are captured electronically.

In the mean time we invite you to join us this season when we resume formal gathering starting in March. If you give me your e-mail address I can copy you on minutes and agendas. Also do visit our web site for past endeavors modelshipwrightguildwny.org.

Thanks for the note. I look forward to meeting and discussing the art of model building. I started building a few years ago when I retired and found I actually I had time to do something other than work. The Niagara is my third project, the last was the Baltimore, which took me over two years to complete.

      My e-mail address is ronkamin@gmail.com.

Thanks, Joe.  I am interested, lively enough, not so talented, but keep working on it.  I'm on my 4th build, H.M. Granado 1756.  If you saw the results you would know I'm a long way from even moderately proficient  Due to a move from SC to Ithaca, NY (and other stuff) I still haven't finished her, but hope to soon.  I have long wished for a nearby club and look forward to hearing about y'all.

  8. Hey Chuck was just looking at your blocks and trying to figure out your process. If you recll you gave me the Winne "laser" files to create my own bulkheads and strongback with a CNC. Indeed it was a learning experience! Yours It would seem to me would be executable with an X, Y, Z axis cnc but would benefit with the 4th axis of rotation. You don't have to spill the beans but is that how you pulled these off?

    Joe

Nope…just a 3 axis machine.  Its a very involved process I am still refining

Thank you again.

  11. Good morning Pete. I happened upon your posting this morning and welcome you to MSW. In addition what caught my eye was the fact that you hail from western NY. I am the chair/facilitator of the Model Shipwrights of Western NY and would like to invite you to join us at one of our hybrid meetings (both in person and via streaming). We have an upcoming one in May before we recess for the summer. If you supply me with an email address I will forward you a copy of our LOG from this weeks session as well.

Generally, sessions are structured with introductions of visitors, followed by a brief business segment and then we almost always have a central presentation topic or two ending with a show and tell of group models. The sessions usually last two hours.
So you are invited to visit us (tune in via Zoom) this Fall and see what we are all about. You might find us interesting enough to join us on a more consistent basis. Please PM me, with your email address or cell, and I will put you on distribution for our Fall schedule.
We will not badger you beyond this outreach if you are not interested.
    Hoping to hear from you.

  24. I realized that I can contact other upper NYS folk on MSW through the “Community” function. Here is an out-reach I am planning to send to about 35 folk as far away as the Albany area. Have any comments or suggestions.?

Allow me to introduce our model ship group located in Rochester NY to you.
