  3. Viking longship by Cathead - Dusek - 1:35

This is an upgraded version of the basic Dusek kit, adding a lot of extra detail to better represent such a vessel, including replacing the deck with individual planking, adding cargo, improving the shields, making a paneled sail from bond paper, and so on. Details can be found in the build log .

  4. Missouri River steamboat Arabia (1856), 1:64

American "Western River" steamboat that operated on the Missouri River between St. Louis and the state of Montana. She was built in 1853 and sank in 1856 near what is now Kansas City, MO (more on her history here and here ). She was rediscovered in the 1980s, partially excavated, and became the subject of a beautiful museum near the Kansas City riverfront. This scratchbuilt model is based on the remnants on display at the museum and a fair amount of modeller's license based on other period vessels as no contemporary photos or drawings are known. The general appearance was also built to follow a painting by Gary Lucy commissioned by the museum , since this is the public image of Arabia. See more Gary Lucy art here .  Build log here .

  5. Missouri River steamboat

Typical upper Missouri River (USA) steamboat of the 1870s. Scratchbuilt from plans for the famous Far West, the boat that ascended the Yellowstone River in support of General Custer's troops before and after the battle of Little Big Horn. Built from wood, with styrene castings for doors and windows. Chimneys, furnaces, and engines all scratchbuilt from styrene stock.

  9. NRG Capstan Project 1:24

This is my take on the NRG's Capstan Project , meant to teach scratchbuilding skills. This was built using maple, cherry, and walnut that I harvested, milled, and finished on my rural property. I made this at the smaller 1:24 scale rather than the suggested 1:16 so that it would fit in with several Model Shipways naval cannon dioramas I'd previously built. Build log here:
