  1. Ed, I'm hooked and will be ordering from the UK shortly.(in Sri Lanka presently). I was kinda hoping you would have finished Vol 2 so that I could order both Vols together and save on shipping costs. BTW, will ordering 2 or more books from Seawatch save shipping costs? Just wondering Even if you don't have Vol 2 ready I'll be ordering vol 1. Just can't wait! There's one thing I'd like to know- Are there detailed instructions for drafting ship's plans using CAD? Especially in 3D? I want to do my own drafting and am looking desperately all over for updated instructions/tutorials. Okay I know Wayne has written a wonderful article on the subject but I am trying to explore the possibility of using layers, 3D and rendering in combination to initially fair out the draughts and then to loft the frames from the faired-out plans. In the write-up for the book it mentions that you've touched upon the subject! Why don't you publish a whole practicum on the subject? The way you're going I'll be on the way to bankruptcy in a hurry and enjoying it all the way! Len
  2. SketchupModeler, gee thanks --- I'm a little disappointed that i have to still keep looking for the Holy Grail, ie a cheap program which can do everything including scratching your back! Nonetheless I'll still keep watching your build with interest as it is fascinating, Maybe it'll throw light on what I want.
  3. Tony, Sorry I may have posted my query badly. What I'd meant to say was " Where is the other tutorial on the web?"
  4. At the moment I only know of one tutorial on the web about 3D modelling of wooden sailing ships and that is restricted to the creation of a hull shape. Are there any others around? Tony, you say there is another tutorial on a hull shape-- Where?
  5. Wayne hi I've followed your tutorial and have found it great. However much water has flowed under the bridge and I'm sure most of us would find it fantastic if you revise and update it - or come out with a new edition outlining your latest work. Or you can point us in the proper direction................. The reason I'm asking is that I think that 3d and Layers are much neglected tools and I'm sure they could be used effectively to alleviate much of the tedium. Elsewhere in this forum some fantastic work is being done with 3D but it seems it is being used only for building virtual models. I was hoping someone would come out with 3D for drafting frames and individual parts. I think you are our Great White Hope........ Thanks in advance
  6. Kudos to you. Fantastic Work. I was using Wayne’s tutorial to draft of ship’s plans in 2D. Then I realised that the latter part of the drafting could be done in 3D which could be used to fair out and remove any “bumps” from the resulting curves, thus producing smooth curves for the final plan. Your build gives me the idea that the initial stage of drafting in 2D is unnecessary and it could be done straight away in 3D. Your finding flaws between the lines in the AOTS drawing and your build bears this out- that it is possible. What I’d like to know is- Can a final set of usable plans be drafted using Sketchup? I’m asking this because I always thought that Sketchup had problems dealing with curves especially Splines. Secondly Sketchup had a problem in scaling and printing plans. I was told that the best solution would be to draft plans in 2D, export them into a 3D application. Extrude and render them in 3D, correct the flaws and then reuse the CAD program to loft the final set of plans. Aah the tedium of this!!! Now you’re holding out hope for some long suffering and aging modelers like myself. By the way my surfing on the web seeking answers to the above led me to believe that Rino was the only app capable of doing what you are doing with Sketchup. Shows how the web could be so misleading. Do you intend your build to be only a virtual model? Whatever the intention keep up the good work. Len
