  1. Hi Dominic, I'm getting near the planking stage of the Victory which I must admit looks to be a daunting task. In a nutshell is it best to first soak the ends of the plank, then bend, ( I have the pliers type plank bending tool ), and then pin it to the frame and allow to dry. When dry remove plank, glue and repin back in place, is this the best way of doing it ?. Like yourself I intend to paint the ship, would it be useful as each plank is glued to the hull to mark with a pencil where the frame's are, would this help me later when cutting out the gun turrets to miss them. With regards to the painting, I have purchased the Admiralty paint kit but have no idea when, with what colour and what parts to paint. Perhaps I can bug you a bit later with regards to this when I have completed the planking, which will be a long way off yet. One last thing, I have glued the rear upper deck in place and when the mast is pushed through the two holes it's at a slight angle. Looking at the plans this seems to be how it looks, leaning slightly rearwards, is this ok or should they be upright. I knew I should have started with a canoe but so far so good, a few mistakes but it's coming along ok. I know your build is on hold at the moment but thanks for your time and pictures posted so far, they really help people new to the game like me, regards Dolly.
  2. Hi Dominic, waiting for the middle deck to set so looking ahead a bit. I can't seem to find the length to cut the steps, I assume that if the stairs have to be 20ml wide so the steps would be approximately 18 ml, is this about right. So many different sizes of wood I'm bound to use the wrong bits at some stage. Followed your decking procedure with the holes and slight gap, very pleased with results, regards Dolly.
  3. Hi Dominic, do you ever nail the decks into place or do you find glue and clamping is fine, Dolly.
  4. I think the colour looks good I'll be off to Homebase tomorrow to buy. Would you recommend separate stain then gloss rather than the tins which combine the two together, Dolly.
  5. Hi Dominic, just checking that you use the oak satin wood stain for all the decks, cheers Dolly.
  6. Hi Dominic, my wife bought me this model kit last year as a early retirement present, always wanted the Victory. Here's the problem, I have only made one model before, about 30 yrs ago, so I have jumped straight in at the deepest end. I have just started the model and felt that I needed help, so went on the computer and found your blog. Luck would have it that you have just started building the Victory, excellent, someone I can get tips from. I have already snapped the end off the gun side then read that you made the hole slightly bigger because of the angle. Love the way that you have done your decking I will definately try your method. Due to available time my model will take several years to do, however I'm in no hurry I just want to try and get it right. I will be following your build closely and would be grateful if you can continue giving as many tips, helpfull advice and pictures as possible. I must admit the planking, whenever I get there, looks like it could be a bit of a challenge for me, will study your method intensely. I'll stop going on now but if it's ok with you, if I need help will ask you through this blog, regards Dolly.
