That would require that I was taking pictures as I went through them.    I was mostly just using toothpicks (round) stuck in Balsa along with another flat toothpick for the tail end that hangs out.  Now that I think I've got the spacing about right, I'll find something that the glue won't stick to as easily, probably brass tubing, as I don't have any appropriately sized nails to use.  Pretty much the same thing as Dan Vadas used here - http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/230-hms-vulture-by-dan-vadas-1776-148-scale-16-gun-swan-class-sloop-from-tffm-plans-completed/page-101?hl=%2Brope+%2Bcoil#entry339219

I tried using the tiny brass nails, but they ended up too narrow, without any gap in the center of the coils to work with to hang them (before I started leaving the tail hanging out as part of the coil building process) and I kept messing up the coils trying to widen them after.  I then used multiple brass nails at either end, and it works 'ok', but the round toothpicks ended up being just about the right size I think.

For someone who doesn't like them, you certainly make them pretty good.
When I get to coil stage on my Endeavour, I will be coming back here looking for instructions. cheers Chris

So I haven't made much progress since my last update, and I've discovered that I don't really like rope coils very much.  Seems like a great thing to dislike given my subject choices, hahaha..

In any case, I'm working on getting a jig that makes coils I like, and I think I'm getting somewhat close, but still not there.

I started working at the stern, and I'm done with the stern, quarter-deck, boom, and shrouds now.

The coils are taking much longer than I expected them to, but oh well.  Getting a bit better as I go along.

Bit more work at the Shipyard.
    Chess Trees added.
I could not source a 3.0mm dia. 1mm thick sheave, so filed down a 4mm dia. to suit.
The first picture I previously posted showing the laminated CT.
Other 2 Port & Starboard on the hull.

It is all looking top notch, I hope mine comes up as good, WHEN, I get to your stage.

    Hi everyone

Today I actually started on Magellan's hull.  As mentioned before, I intend to fully fitout Magellan's interior accommodation; all four decks of it.  How I intend to do this is by allowing each deck to be lifted off so that the interior can be viewed.  Talk about a challenge!!!  Oh well, if you don't try, nothing would be achieved.

So, without further ado, the photos below show the start of the hull.  It may not look like much, but, hopefully it'll turn into one hell of a beauty!  A very long way to go, of course...

    Wish me luck!

    Cheers

    Patrick

    Hello together,

step by step the first section of construction will be completed. The hull and the deck fittings are almost done, the guns are rigged and in place. Only the reserve topmasts and the boat have to be prepared, built and at least fixed. I think it will last another  two or three days.

Everything works fine so far, I added some parts to the model as the buoys for the anchors or the rigging for the guns. For the guns I needed about 2.5 hrs per each for building, rigging and fixing. But it is worth every minute - otherwise the guns would not look so authentic. I hope you do not dislike the coils but I did not want to show them in a perfect "Naval Academy"-Style. I am not sure if the rope is not a bit too long - but anyway: I like it

See you soon with the next update

    Cheerio

    Max

Cabbie reacted to Stuntflyer in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Stuntflyer (Mike) - FINISHED - 1:48 scale
At the August SMSNJ meeting I had the opportunity to compare my Cheerful with Chuck's. It was obvious that I had made a few mistakes making it difficult to achieve the overall look at the stern that I was striving for.

This is what the square tuck was going to look like if I continued on. There is only enough room for four 3/16" filler pieces when there should be room for five. This was caused by my over fairing the last two bulkheads by a considerable amount. The black lines indicate what the correct shape should have been as pointed out by Chuck.

I thought about leaving things the way they were and I might have, if it were not for the fact that the fashion pieces were misshapen as well. I made three attempts at these but never got the consistent width that I was hoping for. Bothered by all of this I decided to try and fix these mistakes if possible.

This photo shows most of the planks and the two fashion pieces removed. I could have left a few more planks in place but I wanted to correct for some gaps left during the first attempt.

1/16" shims were added to the last two bulkheads and faired.

The planking has been completed for the second time. After gluing and clamping, I used a flashlight shining from inside the hull in order to show the tiniest gap that might have existed between the planks.  Any gaps were corrected by tightening the clamps a bit more.

In order to get the proper shape for the fashion pieces, I had to cut back the upper half of the wales about a 1/16". This allowed the fashion pieces to rise up slightly thus giving more width to the middle section. The process was tedious as I didn't want to damage any of the surrounding planking.

After all the fixes were completed I was able to complete the square tuck. The five filler pieces are actually .196" wide instead of 3/16".

    Back on deck SMs.
One left hand coming along slowly after the cut(Carpal T). Just takes time to heal, otherwise raring to go.

    Had to do something though:
Installed the Airing Ports I had made some time ago.
Very fiddly work being so small.

While not able to answer about the wales, I can discuss a bit about design waterlines. Regrettably, they were more art than science. The designer showed where the ship should float, but it all depended on lading and ballast to achieve. The British didn't adopt more scientific methods of calculating displacement until mid-1800's, even though early (approximate) methods were known in the mid to late 1600's.

The top of the wale in midships is 6 strakes down from the port sills, if you use the same width planks as the replica.  Best I can do.

Have a look on google books. If you don't mind reading on the computer they have some of the older books free.
    And other ones quite cheap.
Also an online library site called Scribd has some books free to read just by joining, and others for a monthly fee.

    @pollex
I currently don't have any source of income so just about anything is out of my price range. I was able to find a copy for $24.99 and will keep it in mind but as for now I will have to make due without it.
