Hello All ,

Having made different kids of models over the years (on and off ) , I am in the process of constructing Artesania Latina "Marie -Jeanne" Tuna fishing boat . I am taking my time double planking her , finishing off with a pear wood hull which at present looks ok to my eyes . I am now planking the port side to finish the hull and have the basic deck planking and comings finished , and am looking forward to finishing the project for display . Unfortunately there are several pieces of the walnut wood pieces missing , I have contacted AL via their ebay site but no answer as yet !

As I am really enjoying  the plank on bulkhead type of construction , I plan on making another model after finishing this one and was thinking about trying a solid hull construction model . As I am limited to mainly a Dremmel tool and various small hand files and other tools do you think this is a viable option ? I would like to know how much wood needs to be removed from solid hull construction kits and / or any other type of work I would need to carry out and if this would be achieveable with my tools ?

Any advice appreciated .

Para Reg mate. 

I am making my first plank on frame model boat, the "Marie - Jeanne" French Tuna fishing boat which has really nice lines with sails, which is why I chose it. Taking it easy and using other people's build projects from the forum. It's coming on good and using my own skills which I've worked out myself from a previous boat build from scratch using my own plans. 

I must say this is a very relaxing hobby and takes me back to my own childhood making airfix planes (spitfire being my first). Pity today's kids don't follow on doing this as it gives you a good grounding in practical skills.

Hi Neil, old Yorkshire lad by the sounds of it, using the " Ridings" titles. I'm from the NE coast shipbuilding area which is probably where I get my love of maritime and my Grandfather was a Lloyd's Registered Surveyor of shipping. Like you I'm ex squaddie but after a bit ill health I find it relaxing going back to modeling plank on frame. By the way my Mam was born in Hull.

Anyone how much weight in bags of sand  I would have to use as ballast (for sailing) the Marie Jeanne, relative to the size of the model?

Welcome. 

My advice is to use the forum and the members wealth of experience. When doing your first wood ship build, choose your first model after lots of research and use YouTube for ship builds for your particular model.

I have just bought an Artesania Latina "Marie Jeanne" from an ebay seller (who has a good selling rating ) and when Ive started to put the model together have only just realised that it is a lot smaller than the 565mm length stated for this model  . The keel measures around 325mm in length !!!

Was there a smaller model version made by Artesania Latina  ?

Further to my last message, as I want to take my time and make the Marie-Jeanne as authentic looking as possible, can anyone please suggest any further deck furniture to make it look busy and more like a working fishing boat.

Hello All, 

Just a follow on from the actual Hull planking process. I intend to leave the top third of the Hull fine sanded and oiled or varnished in natural wood, the next third (middle section) an Ivory colour (Acrylic or ename?), and the bottom third in crimson (Acrylic or enamel?). My question is acrylic or enamel? Reasons and are both waterproof? When dry. Can both be varnished over using yacht varnish?

Hello All, 

I've now found a source in the UK for pearwood strip and have decided to take some time in building the Artesania "" Marie_Jeanne" and completing the outer Hull planking with Pearwood with a clear varnish finish (unless any member can suggest a more professional ideally waterproof finish?) 

My Question is can anyone tell me what width planking (in mm) would best represent the original planking on this boat and how many metres/feet I would need to complete it? 

Could you also suggest a nice planking for the decking that would complement the pearwood?

I am not new to modelling and have even built a boat from scratch without the use of plans etc . However having renewed my interest in model building , I am purchasing the Artesania Latina Marie - Jeanne French Tuna Fishing Boat in use from 1900 to 1950 but have a few questions .

First of all can anyone who has built this model tell me if it is double skinned / planked ? and does this just mean you are giving the hull a greater strength ? or are there other advantages ?

Second is it possible to make this model remote controlled ?

Or even better , could you use it as a sailing model if using titebond 3 waterproof glue on all parts and coating the hull with a decent Yacht varnish or a good few coats of paint ? Also what is best for ballast ?

Forgot to ask your advice regarding what sort of deck equipment / supplies (barrels of water etc) would Vikings be carring on their ships ? Just for extra pieces to add to the model for a little authentic showing .

A very interesting build , especially as I intend to build one myself . I only wish it were a little larger specifications ( say around 2ft to 2ft 6" in length ) .  As you say you consider this to be the best on offer of this type of longship , is there any other model you would recommend ?

Out of curiosity , what thickness are the keel and bulkheads and also dimensions of the planking ? as my first intention was to scratch build a Viking longship (I have done similar before ) .
