what if after the joints had dried you then added a very tiny bit of cotton to the front of each joint giving the effect of a wrap around tie. Must admit this is a good way if you the model maker has issues with their hands ect. I did see a few pictures the other day of a whaler being made which used the same process you are using, the guy then added a blob of PVA to each supposed joint, let them dry and they looked really good.

By 'tied up' I assume you mean furled? Yes, there are many modelers in this forum, along with examples of their work, who do just that. Browse through the gallery to find some models with furled sails, then find the build logs for those models to see how they did things. Try searching 'furled sails', too - you'll probably get some hits. Good luck!

    Terry,

Have a look at Landlubber Mike's technique for furled sails log <link here> . He discusses the best shape of material to use to ensure the furled sail is not too bulky.

There are other logs that cover this but Mike's log is a good starting point.

It is possible that you may need extra rigging since some kits that are supplied without sails may have a simplified rigging scheme.

    Hi Steve

Yes I read your build log, you did a magnificent job, something I will fall back on a few times for sure. It is a step up for me so I will take as much time as it needs.

I am in the throws of finishing my Endeavours longboat and after looking and looking I have ordered the 1/64 Caldercraft brig supply. I have spent hours and hours on the longboat and although not new to model making, I am totally new to wood ships and I wanted to test my patience, I loved it indeed, it is facinating. Any ways, I have looked through build logs and will continue to do so, in the meantime, does anyone who has worked this kit have any advice on anything it comes with that could be better changed, any of the kit parts. I am in no rush with builds so will take as long as it takes and do a build log.

I hated the instructions on the AL longboat and dearly wanted some plans, I have not picked the supply lightly, I picked it because I loved the look of just a rigged ship and no sails and the ships history. I however cannot find any books on this ship so if anyone does I'd be grateful for feedback. I'm all excited now :-) thanks for any. Help.

Telp got a reaction from Canute in Attaching Parrels to the gaff
Please excuse me if I have named things wrong here, however I am trying to learn the various areas of a sailing ship but it isn't coming on fast. I am at the point of attaching my mid sail, there are Two attachments that run top and bottom of the sail which then run horizontal to the mast, I think they are called Gaffs? at the end of these I have to attach black beads, I think they are called parrels? can anyone give me any idea the best way to tie these beads on, was there any specific knot that was used in days gone by so to speak as I am trying to teach myself the correct ways.

    Many thanks for any help

As a former paint sprayer I did on many occasions make up and mix my own paints, we all see colour in different ways and although I appreciate many companies offer what they say are original colours based on records changes in law meant that many paints now have to be user friendly, so no more leads, coppers etc. I tend to use acrylics for quick jobs as it dries fast and enamels where a quality finish on things like metal is needed with a longer brushing time. You can of course use spray paints which are used on cars etc for wonderful finishes.

Get some base paints like white, red, green, black and so on and attempt to mix your own for as little or as much as you need, I myself use model paints like humbrol, it can be a pain at time so the way is to go very slow and mix well before adding anymore as colour can sit deep and take a while to fully mix. With white, red, black, green, yellow and blue you can mix a wealth of various shades and colours. Always good to prime before painting as well as it allows a bond between the surface and the finished paint work but also allows you to see problems prior to placing the finish. You can use household paints as well, just do gentle coats rather than trying to do the whole task in one go. Hope that may help a little. By the way, ink can be a good finish, especially when over coated with a nice Matt varnish to remove any shine.

Terry, the parrel would have run through the 'beads' and been spiced to the gaff jaws on each side.

    Hi Frank

I have been looking through builds for Supply and without doubt you have done one beautiful job indeed. I am hoping to get the Caldercraft kit in the next few weeks and will use your build log as a learning kerb for myself if that is ok. I will take heed as well in certain areas for the rigging where following the kit instructions makes things harder later on, such as doing the ratlines etc first. Thanks for a great post.

Hi Bryan. I am somewhat ahead of you on the same build. Am about to start work on the masts and yards. Have done a fair bit of bashing of the kit though. My only comment at this stage is that the supplied timber for the second layer of planking is quite brittlle, rough and splintery, particularly on the edges. You will probably need to go through the whole lot and disregard some of them. Luckily Caldercraft provides more than enough to complete the job. I also found a very good example of this ship in the online exhibit from the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. It is worth a look if you are considering any bashing. Use the Museum search facility - enter HM Armed Brig Supply - 24 hi res pics.
