  1. My wife posed me with question I have never considered. How were canon finished. We’re they painted, oiled or tarred . i have no idea despite quite a bit of reading about the more nerdy aspects of naval practices. Does anyone know?
  2. On the subject of blades, I have a couple of small Japanese knives. I don't know how widely available they are; I bought mine from Axminster Tools in England. They are a lot thicker than scalpel blades, but they take an incredibly fine edge. I use a fine water stone. They can be ground to any angle you like, but the edge is a little brittle if ground too acutely.
  3. An excellent wood but very difficult to get hold of is New Zealand Kauri. I bought some reclaimed blocks when I lived there and the grain is close and straight as a die. I have a plank of swamp Kauri that is carbon dated to 40,000 years old. If you are interested in wood Google Kauri Kingdom at Awanui. If I ever pluck up the courage to build anything with it, I may be able to claim the oldest boat in existence.
