  1. Sometimes you have to back up a bit to make progress… I have successfully removed the white sails! There’s a few loose threads to tidy up, then I can start moving forward again…
  2. This is basically what the instructions show. The horse is just above the cap rail in front of the transom, and the tiller passes over the horse… I really appreciate the feedback! I think, since I am not trying to replicate any specific boat and therefore don’t have a good reason to follow the directions when they don’t seem to make sense, I am going to put the horse above the tiller. Perhaps the imaginary sailors that will sail this boat will appreciate the change… One more question: I found a video on YouTube by Bruce Algar of his ALB build. He has the horse above the tiller, and mounted to the top of the transom. I’m wondering if I should mount mine to the transom, or make it taller and mount it to the cap rail in front of the transom. It looks a bit weaker to me with it mounted to the transom… I don’t know how much force is on the horse, but it seems like mounting it to the cap rail would be more robust… again I am grateful for your thoughts!!!
  3. Well, this build has been sitting untouched for way too long. At some point the kit box disappeared, so I was missing about half the sails and the stern boats. I didn’t know if I would ever get back to it… I then stumbled across another kit on Facebook marketplace for $5. Seems like a pretty inexpensive quick way to get the missing parts and bring this build back to life… so I grabbed the kit and pulled the ship off the shelf in the basement. There was a bit of damage unfortunately- the top of the forward mast had snapped just below the top sail, but I was able to get it back in position without fouling up the rigging and a drop of CA held it in place… There is a bit of a catch though… my ship has white sails, and the kit has tan sails. Obviously the ship won’t look good with half the sails a different color. Hopefully I can remove the white sails without causing too much damage… (I do like the tan sails better, I think they look more realistic). So this ship is back on my “active build” roster!
  4. A bit more… And a question: the plans show the horse below the tiller. This doesn’t make sense to me, seems like it would interfere with the rigging on the horse. I think I read something about it somewhere in somebody’s build log but I don’t remember whose log it was. I think I want to make the horse taller so that it is above the tiller… your thoughts?? Thanks!
  5. Got the spine done, and 2 bulkheads in… then I looked at the clock… yikes! I have to work in the morning… …pics soon…
  6. I received my second wood kit recently… I almost put it on the shelf to work on after I finish my Armed Longboat, but I decided to crack it open and get started. I figure if I get tired of one boat I can switch to the other one and do something completely different… I started with the stand on my other build, so I figured I would continue that trend and put the stand together for this one… I decided to dress the stand up a bit with some mystery wood from what was advertised as a Constructo Mayflower kit on Facebook marketplace but turned out to be a bunch of bits and pieces from at least two different kits, mostly wood and assorted fittings… (definitely not as advertised, but also definitely worth what they were asking for it).
  7. Decided to go blue… (cap rails aren’t glued on yet, they’re just sitting roughly in place…) Not too sure about the color of the stand… it doesn’t really seem to match anything on the boat. I’m trying to decide between white, black, or blue; at this point I’m leaning towards black hoping it will sort of disappear underneath the boat…
  8. So… the idea of a butt joint in the middle of the cap rails sounds a bit sketchy to me, I’m thinking of picking up a sheet of wood long enough to make them in one piece instead… your thoughts?
  9. Well… I had hopes of getting a lot further today. I really thought I had more 1/4x1/16 stock but I just can’t find it anywhere, and of course every store around me that might have some is closed for Thanksgiving… so I guess this is it for today’s progress…
  10. Keith’s videos are great! I haven’t watched much of the series on Edith, I’ll have to start working my way through them…
