  1. Thanks juhu and ccoyle for the info. I seen from the forum poll that AL and Mamoli both had poor ratings. I had only been considering ships from Model Shipways, Caldercraft and Syren who all had great ratings in all categories but a build log by first time builder Rossi46 got me interested in the HMS Surprise. But I think I'll wait for the Caldercraft version. So now I'm back to figuring out my first build and the Model Shipways Bluenose looks appealing or the Caldercraft HM Brig Supply. Time for more research of build logs and YouTube vids. Thanks guys!
  2. Awesome job Rossi46! The HMS Surprise is going to be my first build also and this build log is not only a major help but an even bigger inspiration.
  3. I see that Artesania Latina and Mamoli both make an HMS Surprise kit. Other than the scale what are the differences between these two kits in quality, instructions, detail, etc.?
  4. Hi everyone, my name is Allison, I'm 60 and from Maine. As a young girl I had a lot of bad **** happening in my life and I found that building models, mostly cars was like therapy in that I could just focus on doing that one thing and forget about everything else for awhile. I also remember that as a teenager I received a gift of a wooden ship model that had sail material and al kinds of rigging etc.. Of course this wooden ship model was way out of my capabilities and I never did finish it. Fast forward to now and I've started building models again and while it's fun building detailed cars and motorcycles I still remember the wooden ship model I never finished. So now I'm embarking on building wooden ship models and I'm in the process of learning everything I can about the hobby and also trying to figure out which wooden ship kit I'll start with. I'll appreciate any and all help and I know I have a lot to learn. I look forward to enjoying the journey of becoming a good wooden model ship builder.

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
