  1. I think I am going to furl all the sails rather than some. I noticed in my hiatus that I made the main mast wrong. It should have been several feet taller, it is noticeable in the plans and the photo on my wall. I missed it and Lees makes no mention of Masting ships like the Enterprise. Or, I missed it. Regardless my driver (spanker?) is now going to be too short for the width. The more experienced here will/ have seen it right away. That's what happens when you venture off script without the proper knowledge. Live and Learn.

I am using Land Lubber Mikes post on furled sails and used Lees Masting and Rigging to start laying out my sails. I drew than full size in Illustrator and printed the Fore sails, they seem about right to me. Then again, re-read the first paragraph. :) I bought some silk span, that will get washed today and I will start figuring out how much to reduce the height.

    More to follow.

  2. Manic,

I agree with Cathead,, feed speed or bit quality, that is a pretty small profile, my guess is the bit was dull. Mahogany likes to burn when you rout it, your bits have to be SHARP. Listen to the motor, if it sounds like it is struggling, slow down. Watch your shavings, they should look like miniature planer shavings not sawdust. Also sometimes it is best to take your cuts in steps, (this is a small profile my guess is with the right router bit combination one pass is fine) Set your router to maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of the final depth and then readjust for the last pass. It could also be the router; how much HP is the motor? If it a small trim router that could be a problem too. More passes. The burn marks should sand out.

  3. Popeye,

Been a while. once again I see you are off building old favorites.

That is a good looking cockpit, amazing the detail in models today compared to when we were kids. Was PE additions to the instrument panel or molded in?

As I was scanning through your build I saw something about a procedure on your legs, all is well I hope????

    Best,

    Sam

  4. Thanks to all who hit the like button. Mark, it is good to be back. I have not had much time to brows builds yet but I will stop by yours hopefully toady and see what I have missed.

Nothing to show, I ordered some silkspan and Japanese paper. one of those will become my sails furled and unfurled.

Pictures when there is something to show.

  5. Wow, where did 2-1/2 years go????

All, thanks for your patience, been busy with other projects and well, the more I didnt work on my build the easier it was to not build.

First, in the last year and a half my company has moved, twice. My commute is now double each way and by the time my day ends there is no desire to sit a the bench and build. A residential move is in order but housing prices need to drop, I am not buying a house at the top of the market with retirement 10 years away. So, that leaves the weekend. Last Saturday I sat down and said to myself each weekend will have some amount of time devoted to building. Hopefully that stirs the juices and I will be more open to spending time at teh bench and not in front of the idiot box.

That said, I have finished the Fore Top yard, the last of my yards. Now its on to crossing them and finally finishing up. I have planned all along to furl most of the sails, I have spent too much time detailing things to hide it with sails. Yesterday I spent time reading up on furled sails and ordering some silkspan. I have started reading up on sail dimensions and shape. Next weekend will be drawing up sail plans and learning how to furl them.

The foot ropes on the Fore Top Yard one came out OK, better then the Fore Yard, I may go back and redo the Fore Yard foot ropes. then again I may not.

    Pictures or it didnt happen:

  6. Manic,

Take a look at this photo you posted. Each of those numbers at the end of a line should correspond to a belay pin or ring bolt on your deck plan. On my plans there was a small deck plan on the lower right corner that ties in with these numbers. The circles with no numbers are blocks that you will strop to the end of your line. There will be additional lines that run from belay points up through those blocks and then back down to another belay point/block/ring,... something. You will need to spend some time looking over these plans and the plans I PMed to you (after checking that I wasnt breaking copyright or MSW rules of course :) )

Best of luck, If you run into more head scratchers, try posting a question in the rigging forum, you will get a wider variety of responses from a bunch of very helpful people.

  7. Thanks Jeff. I have access to a wide format printer at work. I had to go in Monday to check on roof leaks so was able to get them printed on some butcher paper for starters. Waiting for the bosses approval and an excuse to go back in (we are not considered an "essential" business) then I'll print on something more durable. We have some white vinyl that might work or I'll run it through the laminator. First things first, have to convince Better half we have a place to put this once it's complete. I may have to scale down to 1/72. That will be a disappointment.

  8. Lets call this my "soft opening" of my build for the Winchelsea. I have another build to finish so it will be a few weeks before I break ground officially. There is also going to be some ...... discussion.....with Better Half about the size of this build. 😀  I like the 1/4" scale as it is close enough to the Enterprise build one will get a comparison. That being said, since I want to build this rigged rather than Admiralty, there is a possibility I will be scaling down to 1/72. Time will tell, I am not concerned about it at the moment.

One question, I saw somewhere and I do not recall where. What is the sheet size for the plans? 36 x something I seem to recall. I will be going in to my work next week to print the plans up. We have a wide format 72" printer available as well as a 72" plotter both have a feature that will let me cut templates as needed. I think all I will have to do is print at 100% and check the scale, but I dont run the printer and the guy who normally would is permanently unavailable you might say.

Until then, everybody stay healthy and I will see you here soon.

    Best,

    Sam
