  1. Jürgen says he can do the enlargements to 1:5 scale (cost goes up to 38,70 Euros which is still reasonable) which is great news, so I just need to arrange the bank transfer.
  2. Thanks to the German-language "Wehrmacht" forum, I was given the link to a man, Jürgen Eichardt, who sells a set of drawings of the 3,7cm Flak M42, as well as other ship-related drawings. In fact, he's the guy who drew the excellent side view that I posted above (offered as a sample on his website). The drawings themselves are a very reasonable 15 Euros, total including shipping to Japan will be 18,70 Euros. But he only accepts bank transfers, which will probably cost me another 50 Euros. So that good news and bad news. http://www.ship-model-today.de/schiffsdetails.htm And just for fun, I thought you might like to see how my scratch-built ShKas machine gun shown unfinished above turned out.
  3. I found what appears to be the title of the German manual for this cannon and mount ("Vorläufige Beschreibung der 3,7 cm Flak M 42, Band I" = "Provisional Description of the 3,7cm Flak M 42, Volume 1") on a German-language forum about the Wehrmacht, but haven't yet located the manual itself. Ian, you and me both! 🤔
  4. That would be perfect. I'll pursue that lead. (I read German at quite a high level.). The other thing I'm looking for is a spur gear with a 5" pitch diameter.
  5. Thanks. Every project I do gives me a bit more confidence that I can tackle the next project, which initially always seems like something impossible. When I was initially approached about doing the 37mm deck gun that seemed impossible. It's so large (the cannon itself is over 24") and the mount has so many highly detailed components. For about two weeks now I've been collecting information and mentally trying to translate drawings and photos into an image of the actual object, as well as how to break the build into stages. It's frustrating when you realize that even what appears to be an outstanding drawing inevitably misses or hides almost as much information as it contains. So many unanswered questions!
  6. The build of the engine is part of a very long running build (over 400 pages) on RCSB (Radio Control Scale Builder) of a 1:6 scale Albatros CI. It started with constructing a master cylinder, then making a 2-part silicone mold in order to resin cast six of them. After that it was just "hanging on all the decorations."
  7. This new "smaller" project suits me at the moment since the university that I work for is moving all the on-campus professors off-campus. This means that my workshop area will be significantly reduced. I'll still have a space about 5.5m x 3m to build in (and keep all my building supplies and power tools in) but the rest of the house is a traditional Japanese house with tatami floors so no building inside (unlike my current "house" which is really more like a factory). So even though this will be a large object, it's nothing like a 3 meter wingspan RC model.
  8. Outstanding job on your Hasegawa DrI...and like the others I like the map for the base (and the Pour Le Merite). Years and years ago (as in 1984) I was in Tokyo and got one of the Hasegawa DrI kits at a great price because of the yen-dollar exchange rate at the time. But at that time I was living overseas (Saudi Arabia, then Kuwait, then Oman, then Mexico, then Japan) well as as starting a family. I just figured I'd never be able to do the kit justice. So it was stored away until 2003 when I was in the US for a sabbatical. I sold it on eBay and used the money to get into RC scale building and flying. But I still have that strong attraction to the DrI (same as every WWI buff). Eventually, I couldn't come up with any more excuses do I started to scratch-build one based on Joseph Nieto drawings. I was making slow progress, but ended up being side-tracked into other projects. I hope to get back to it eventually.
  9. A friend is planning to build a 1/5 scale Schnellboot S200 (22 feet)...and he needs someone to build the deck guns (i.e. cannons). A month or so ago, I volunteered to make a 1/3.3 scale Russian ShKas machine gun for a Polikarpov Po2 biplane model he's building. He was so pleased with it, that he asked me to build the guns for his S200. He may have found a source for 3D printed 20mm cannons at 1/5 scale, so my task (thankfully) has been "reduced" to the one 37mm cannon. The cannon itself shouldn't be too much work. But, man, that mount will be a serious scale mountain to climb! I've started to collect information, photos, etc. and enlarged some sketches to 1/5 scale to get my mind around the project. With these limited resources in hand, I can start brainstorming about how to divide the build and what materials might be used. I'm strictly a "low tech" builder. No CAD, no CNC, no 3D printing (though I have just recently started playing around with Fusion 360). Just my hands and some pretty ordinary workshop tools. My modeling interests thus far have been restricted to WWI RC aircraft and I've never built a ship model. But then this isn't a boat either...just another "machine" which I've done before, like the dummy Benz BzIII engine (over 300 hand-made parts) for my 1/6 scale Albatros CI.
  10. Thanks for the warm welcome. I've scratch-built a couple of other guns in the past for my WWI models, such as a Danish Madsen to go onto a 1/6 scale Albatros CI (almost finished after 7 years), but nothing even vaguely this big. (Though the scratch-built Benz BzIII dummy engine did have over 300 hand-made parts.) Anyway, doing the 37mm flak cannon will be a wonderful challenge...which is what scale modeling is all about. Where should I post the build? I saw a section on "discussing deck furniture, etc." but I looked there and it didn't seem quite right. As for my friend, he's not a forum kind of guy. **BTW, congratulations on getting the site up and running so quickly again.
  11. I'm not a ship modeler so I don't know if this is the right forum for me. But here goes...and bear with me. I'm an experienced builder of scale WWI RC airplanes (see second photo below). So here's the connection. A friend asked me to scratch-build a 1/3.3 scale Russian ShKas light machine gun for a Polikarpov Po2 biplane model he is building. He was so pleased with the result that he has now asked if I'd be willing to build the 37mm flak cannon and M42 mount for a huge 1/5 scale DKM Schnellboot S200. At 1/5 scale the model will be some 22 feet long! The deck cannon will also be huge. The first photo below shows the (yet unpainted) Shkas gun relative to the size of the new project. This will be a large undertaking in several senses of the word "large" though, in principle, not much different from the other scratch-building I have done. So I'm not sure if a build documenting JUST the flak cannon for the S200 would be welcome here. I'm sure someone here has built an S200 and may have knowledge and advice on on how to do the cannon.
