I guess that Ships in Scale would be my suggestion also. I have been getting their mag since 2000 and have been quite happy with it. As a matter of fact I also decided to order the digital copies of the previous years and the digital copies of that Model Ship Builder mag that quit publishing awhile ago. I only have a few copies of that one, but liked what I saw.

Sovereign on the kitchen bench. I don't normally build here but the girls want to see the progress and it's safer than the shed. My model of Leeuwin 1/56 is just off to the left and a 1/16 Emma C Berry is just off to the right. The Emma C Berry is an RC scale sailing model also.

The hull is coming up great. I like this stage in particular as this is the first time yout get to see the body emerging. Good work.

Just an update on the planking. Been busy the past few days and the majority of the lower hulls first planking is complete, soon to start on the upper hull.

edmay reacted to Rick01 in Do you secure masts
I started off gluing mine in but thrn changed to allowing the rigging to hold it in place correctly. I actually found it easier to position the mast this way and fine adjustments were also easy just by tensioning or slackening the relevant shrouds.

To illustrate, photos of the random pages in that books:
Ancre monograph of Le Fleuron:
Ancre's 74 gun ship. Note that there is nothing about modelling it, it is only about "how it was constructed".

edmay reacted to mtaylor in Ancre Publications
The monographs give a good history of the ship and depending on the monograph, detailed plans with lots of notes on the ship's construction.. There's some monographs only suitable for solid hull as they don't have any below deck info. Others, give you everything in the way of plans... including framing. Note of caution.. these monographs are basically how the full size ship was built and are really not an instruction manual on "do this... do this next, etc."
Having said all that... the monographs are definitely wonderful books for reading and great reference works.

After another long break I've decided to get my feet wet once again. I've recently picked up an early Sergal Sovereign of the seas kit. This is I assume at least early 80's judging by the box art and the fact most parts have to be cut out and are not laser cut or pre cut. From what I have read a lot of people were disappointed with the later releases from the rebadged mantua sergal version as it had laser cut plywood deck planking and gun port cutouts as this early version doesn't. There is also no balsa in this kit.
This ship has been on a list a mile long for me to build purely due to the ornamentation and what she represented in the future of the three decker warships. So having seen it for sale nearby, whether it was the old or new version I had to grab it!

edmay reacted to Pete Jaquith in block fillers at the bow
Hi Michael,
In my 14 Gun Brig "Fair American" build (here on MSW) I choose to use filler blocks to assist in hull fairing as well as providing improved support for planking. Filler blocks were bass wood glued to the bulkheads prior to hull assembly. Fairing was accomplished using 60 grit sandpaper wrapped around hardwood dowels. This approach was successful in providing a well faired hull from an inaccurate set of kit furnished bulkheads. I wood recommend bass wood or pine for filler blocks as its easy to work with but strong enough to support planking.
Regards,
Pete

Hey Karl. Yes, there are eyebolts in the kit.... too big.... too gold colored. The advantage is that the twisted portion in my own provides additional mechanical and glue grip.
Yes... the wheels were included in kit.

Have you checked Abe Books - several listed there (reprints of the 1794 edition including folding plan sheets) for less than $50 US
https://www.abebooks.com/book-search/title/steel's-elements-mastmaking-sailmaking-rigging/
Alternatively, there is an on-line version available at http://www.hnsa.org/resources/manuals-documents/age-of-sail/the-elements-and-practice-of-rigging-and-seamanship/which includes the plates.

Hello Dan. We all started with the first kit.
There are several horror stories about starting with an advanced kit as a first project. ( I have my own) so your change in direction from the Connie to the Phantom is a wise move. It will tell you if you have what it takes to tackle the Constitution or Victory in the future.
My best wishes in your project.
Don't be afraid or shy to ask questions.

edmay reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in 74-gun ship by Gaetan Bordeleau - 1:24
The next build.
Before to begin the construction with wood, I want to have all the necessary information I need for the complete build.
-I do not want to have to do extensive research
-I do not want to draw plans
-I do not want to begin in 5 years
My prefered activity is to build and I want to concentrate on this particular aspect.
V4.0 for the forth time
74 I will build a 74 guns
1/24 I will use the biggest scale I can manage. For this one 1/24 is 8 feet long. This is
about the maximum I can easily manipulate. I would have love to build even at
a bigger scale like 1/12 but I do not have all the plans I need.
Jean Boudriot offers me everything I need. All the required information is available in 5 books, not 4 but yes 5. I am a lazy person for this time, I will not draw the frames; JC Lemineur did and I will use it.
So, I have all what I need to begin :
-all the paper I need (the fifth book is in the mail)
-all the tools I bought tools for the last 30 years
-all the wood I need, at least for the frames.
I did build 1 version of the 74 with exotic woods. If I add the price of all the exotic woods used, you would not believe how much expensive it can be in these quantities.
Traditionnally, in Europe, they use pear wood for the frames and boxwood for the carvings.
In my country, here in Quebec, there are no places to buy these woods and anyway it is too expensive for what I want to do.
Here in Quebec, one of the most stable wood we have is cherry wood. In addition the properties
are similar to pear wood except for the grain; cherry has pear has not. For sanding both are identical. As a bonus, at least for my taste, I love the smell of this wood when cutting or sanding.

Hello Denis ,A kit with a few starting challenges will keep you aware of maybe more to come, which in itself is not a bad thing more or less of what you've been doing for a long time, a nice looking ship ,an admiral pick ??, the best of the season to you ,family and your followers ,Edwin

edmay reacted to grsjax in Vintage/Near Vintage Kit Worth
Old kits are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Sometimes you will see a kit on ebay go for a high price but other times you will see the same kit go unsold for a long time even if the kit is priced low. Only way to know for sure is to list the kits and see what happens.
One thing to look at are the plans in the kits. A good set of plans suitable for scratch building might be worth more than the kit.

edmay reacted to torro in TITANIC by torro - Mantua - scale 1:200
I am currently buidling the TITANIC, Mantua scale 1:200. This model will be completed with PE-parts, such as windows, railings, ladders and more little stuff. Much information comes from the Titanic Research and Modelling Association, the book " RMS Titanic, a modelmaker's manual" by Peter Davies-Garner and CAD-drawings by Robert Hahn.
Here some pictures of what has been done so far :
fixing the frames and start with planking the hull :
funnels with the rivet-pattern :
lifeboats with PE-davits
