  1. Admiralty assisted  trip to a local lake today. Not much wind, but nice Wx and 17*C . Fisher sailed very well in fact in almost no wind. The family 'film crew' were there too, but not got any of their photos or film yet- Posting here a couple of poor photos from video on my PC screen.

Just a few cosmetic tweeks to do on the yacht before I close down the Fisher production unit and go over to the Colin archer.  Not planning to write much about that as so many people have already built it and Carsten and Andreas are already active on this site with their Billing Boats CA models.

Beautiful done. 🙂 My Colin Archer will start again then possible to visit the real one. Will make a call next week.

  2. Son-in-law beamed me a photo of the first 'departure'. I was switching on the Roam3 video camera.

Grandson was there too and took some drone video so that will appear on YouTube when he has time to help me set up an account.

Two 4.8v/2000mAh in parallel -now connected to the Rx. No BEC.

Yacht floats slightly nose down so will move the keel a bit aft and make it longer to give even more righting-moment. Might make a new, more streamlined single-leg keel-  a bit nicer for the trout to look at in the summer.

      Looks beautiful 🙂

  3. I have added some shroud rollers/covers to try to prevent the genoa sheets snagging on the chain plates/bottle screws when changing tack. Fishers do not sail 'close hauled' so changing tack will be a motorised turning-maneouvre through about 150* I suspect!

Lovely solution of the Genoa. I think it will work 🙂

  4. I wrote earlier that the Speed 400 bow-thruster motor would not work. Found that the wires from a large filter across the terminals were touching! - below the filter body and out of sight. So the volts were actually going straight from '+' to  '-' terminals of the battery. Not sure that these filters are even needed with 2.4ghz R/C ?

I am however sure that FUSES are needed!! Burned out three during fault-finding tests!

the filter? is the filter connected between + and -. ?? Then it is a capacitor. Picture ? change it, and the engine will start running 🙂

  5. Just for my amusement I added navigation and cabin lights during  the weekend. Working lights were not part of the original plan and because of this, I could not find a decent way to route the wires for a white stern light.  Of course I could probably have found a way, but as this yacht will certainly only be used in daylight there was not much point in overdoing it! The upper lights -inside the wheelhouse- need to be subdued by painting the bulbs red although some of them (at deck level) have been routed through red plastic milk-skake straws!  There is also some light 'leaking' through the epoxy joins so that will also need attention.

  7. Received info' from the Maritime Museum about the Colin Archer RS14 'Stavanger'. Also a reference to the book by Bjørn Foss about the rescue ships -'redningsskøyter'- .

RS14 was the 2nd of the 'Svolvær' type vessels. RS 12 "Svolvær" was the 1st of these. The Svolvær types were 35 cm longer than the Colin Archer type (RS1, RS 6, RS8 and others) and were 5cm narrower and 5cm less draft. The masts and sailplan were not changed from the original RS1. There was also a lager (heavier ?) keel.  The bow shape  above the waterline seems to have a bit more rake -looking slightly more 'streamlined'. Ref; a drawing in the Bjørn Foss book.

In my mind there should be no real problem to use the Billing Boats RS1 kit to produce a model of the newer (from 1897!)  Svolvær types vessels.

It will be interesting (for me anyway) to hear from Andreas Sundt later when he has visited the RS14 at the museum in east Norway.

  8. I must confess......I was quietly browsing on the local 'for sale' site here in Norway -actually looking for a book on the old Colin Archer rescue skips when....suddenly.... there was a Colin Archer 414 (ABS hull) kit for sale. It was only 20 minutes drive from me so I when to see it.

Some mildew (jordslag) on the sailcloth, the wood didn't smell too fresh either so I bought it😬!  Did not take the original box though, that did not smell good at all.

Once home, I sprayed the sailcloth with 7% vinegar and sprayed everything else with Cavicide (a surface antibac spray) to kill the mildew bugs.

This new (old) Colin Archer will be built as the RS14 which was launched in 1901 and named 'Stavanger'.  It's 1' longer than the RS1 -don't know why yet. The full size RS14 is on land at the Colin Archer museum in Larvik east Norway.

    There, I've confessed,

  9. Components of the wheelhouse aft bulkhead have now been glued in place and test fitted to the cockpit. The aft part of the roof-top is only 'balancing' on the top of the bulkhead. It will be fitted after the whole rooftop is prepared.

Wheelhouse sides were produced yesterday -but no photos available yet.

  10. Hi Andreas, answered your question about brass tubes below your posted question. Should have written it up here so you could see it easier! Included 2 photos.  The plan is to control the large genoa with 2 servos, one for port tack and one for starboard tack. Hope it works!

  11. I've been working on the Fisher 34 since the Colin Archer went into storage. The cockpit area on the Fisher has a lot of curves and has taken time to get right. It's now been brush-painted with one coat of gloss -on top of all the other coats of 'stuff'. Started yesterday on the wheelhouse aft bulkhead and sliding door arrangement and produced what I think is a 'sliding door kit' which will be stained 'teak' and added when the bulkhead is prepared and painted white.

Beautiful 🙂 done. the robe out of brass tubes, is it for sail connection to servos?

  12. Further to the last info about the Rudy: as half the world will already know, the Rudy can be adjusted to spray in a fan shape as apposed to round spray. This gives a better chance of laying down enough paint on larger surfaces to achieve a glossy finish -I hope!  I'm very new at this, so I apologise if I'm stating what every body

     else 20200911_073110.thumb.jpg.3446c730ab312a9dddaf686d3f9fb043.jpgknew years ago 🥴

I'm working on the aft combings of the Fisher 34 motorsailer. Have been unsure as to how to construct the combings.  Started off with a plan to construct in 1mm aircraft plywood but that seemed to be very fiddly. As the photos show I'm going for carved balsa block. Won't get a perfect finish but we're talking 'stand-off-scale here' not 'microscope viewing'!

      lovely 🙂

  14. My Colin Archer is now 'airbrushed' as much as I dare until the rest of the boat is completed. I expect that I will have to give it more coats later as there will certainly be some damage while handling during the build. I wanted to test the whole 'airbrush thing' and ended up using the CA as the extended testbed. The finish so far is silke-matt. It's now going down to the cellar storeroom until I get more progress on the Fisher 34.
