  1. Hi,

    Just noticed this topic.

I cut most of hobbymill.eu with 80 teeth 0,8mm 80mm blade. For very thin pieces i use more teeth and slimmer blade (example 1mm).

Adjusting feed rate helps a lot with cut quality.

To remove burn marks put spacer on fence that ends little after blade meets the stock. Idea is what strip will be loose and will not get stuck between fence and blade after it meets the blade.

I think I need some of that lighter pear stuff...but my laptop hasn't got the right screen colors, so i'm going to compare it on a friend his computer.

So you don't have maple in stock? I need some deck planking for my Sphinx...now I saw that Blue Ensign used Boxwood for the deck planks...maybe that's a option for me to if you don't have the maple.

I think Boxwood and Maple are "yellow-ing" a bit the same over time, so maybe it doesn't even matter that much.

    Hi,

I dont have any maple sadly.

I think very light swiss pear might so something that you are looking for.

    Boxwood is yes yellowish.

For white deck there is also option to use American Holly.

  3. Hi all,

There hasnt been any updates for long time :) .

Some Clients have asked if im closing down the shop - not at all.

I had issue where drumsander broke down and i was basically closed for few weeks. Luckily i learned thing or two about fixing drumsanders.....

    Regarding stock.

I have plenty of Castello boxwood, Alaskan yellow cedar, black hornbeam and Swiss pear (different shades).

Limited quantity of American holly, white hornbeam.

    Regarding Swiss pear.

As have gotten reasonable amount of very very light Swiss pear.

So at the moment there are 3 shades available:

    1) Dark (Swiss pear - elsbree steamed)

    2) Light/pink (true pear steamed)

    3) Very light (Swiss pear - elsbree steamed)

Photos below give better overview of the shades.

Note that if you are building a bigger project where orders are divided into longer period of time then please let me know.

Then i will keep named sample of the color i have sent You with the first package and do my best to follow that in future orders.

As always all requests can be sent as PM here or hobbymill.eu@gmail.com

I was thinking that the burl would make any concern about grain orientation relative to part orientation = moot.  But what is there would be a large enough figure that it would appear to be uniform - that is - no obvious grain - certainly no end grain.

If the primary wood gatherer was known, I wonder if a mutually beneficial deal was possible?  The source could get income from otherwise useless sticks, and we could get stock at a bargain price.

    Hi Jaager

Ship modelling community is small and mostly consists of older men (no offence please!).

Me being 36 years old and not even finished my first build im thankful to community for warm welcome and all the advice: advice and blessing from Hobbymill US Jeff, kind words and advice from James and Chuck, positive support from everyone from MSW.

You have been supportive in MSW community with your deep knowledge on different topics and have been kind to share them!

Please contact me via pm and you get the briar for free of charge, only cost shipping. Please note that i cant choose a piece, it will be what it is-i just find the box and take fair amount from there.

In post #35 you show a piece of Briar.  I have it in mind that this would be excellent for deadeyes and blocks.  Since you have the wood, what do you find?

My understanding is that the part that is used for pipe bodies comes from root burls.  My speculation is that there is a trunk that probably has straight grain, but is just as hard as the root wood.  I wonder if the trunk is discarded?  If so, being trash, it should have a low purchase price.

The plant is a shrub, so the trunk should not be all that thick.  For deadeyes and blocks it does not have to be very large.

    Hi Jaager,

There is indeed somewhere a box with biar (more than piece on photo, i just have to find that box). I just ordered it along with other spices as i have buddy who makes pipes. Sadly the quality wasnt good enough for him but probably is more than fine for deadeyes and blocks. I havent done anything with wood myself other than to cut it smaller to see if inside is good for pipes.

  6. Hello all,

Havent posted anything for a long time :) .

First of all I would like to thank you all for the trust. Its very pleasant to see that 99% of Clients are very happy with their products.

Secondly i would like to apologize for long delivery times. Its summary of holidays, being sick and moving to house. Im trying to catch up on those.

Thirdly there has been so many orders/requests lately so i cant really understand whats going on. This created a situation where queue is 4-6 weeks as i only work on Sundays and evening as for me its hobby also.

At some point i thought if i should close the shop as it just takes so much time from family. I have read stories about good wood suppliers closing exactly for the same reason.

After thinking over it for a week i decided to make investment to bring shop to next level and keep up with the normal deadlines of 2-3 weeks.

As a side note i run custom made metal facade factory on daily basis so setting up a shop something im use to.

In nearest months + during the summer i will update the shop with some new equipment (machines, feeders etc) and also room layout to make it more efficient.

Until then please accept little longer delivery times as usual :) .

The webshop has been closed as most orders come in as email anyways but webpage is up there (not been updated).

Sadly i have to say that i had to look trough the prices also as everything has gone so expensive starting from heating, saw blades etc etc etc.

Regarding stock i have limited myself to: pear, c.boxwood, Alaskan yellow cedar, colored hornbeam, white hornbeam and holly.

Cherry and other spices are might be available based on request.

Thank you all again for trust and support!

I purchased the Hobbymill EU boxwood package for my Cheerful from Vahur and I cannot praise the quality of the wood and the machining highly enough (and the quantity - Vahur added a number of pieces over and above Chuck's woodlist to ensure I didn't go short as well as samples of his other stock). And Vahur is a very pleasant fellow. Highly recomended!

  10. Hello all,

    Hope you are doing well!

First i would like to thank everyone for their support and purchases.

2nd is that i plan to take some time off in end of July and start of August for few weeks.

So if you need anything shipped by that time then please contact me.

3rd, i see a lot of discussions how to prevent burn marks on strips, jams etc etc. There are so many different approaches so i thought to share you mine.

Hopefully in few weeks i have enough time to show i do it with maximum 3-5 eur investment :) .

This method allows you to cut strips even 10mm wide without burn marks or jams. My writing skill are not be best and i tend to jump around in subject but lets see how that goes then.

If site admins have any guidelines/suggestions for that then you are more than welcome to guide me trough.

4th i haven't focused really on webpage as main Customers are still trough MSW and intention isn't really have big web shop.

So for latest info please contact me directly.

Thank you everyone again for their support.

Hi, Is there an update on the milling blades? As I own a Byrnes saw and my blades are running out I am searching for new blades in the EU.

  13. Hi,

Thank you for the review James and also warm words from everyone.

There has been a lot of positive feedback, i would say 99 % of all orders and im really happy to hear that. It only makes me want to do my milling even better.

I would like to add few things so its 100% clear (l like stuff to be like that :) ) :

    1) Note that its not "paid or requested" review - not that anyone asked but i wanted to say it. Wood still was given free of charge.

James was so kind to contact me and ask if i would be interested in review of my wood as he has seen really positive comments on that. Offcouse i accepted the possibility.

James offered me a chance to read the review also before posting it but i wanted it to be honest so i declined. Now thats off the table just in case.'

    2) There are slight "grey" dots/stripes on ends. Its "aluminium" stripe. I have added AL jig to saw but it creates slight mark that comes immediately off with water or sanding.

i dont take it off as most of strips will be sanded anyways. But that jig removes burn marks even from 10mm pear where it happened really often at start.

    3) I always add faulty/not perfect pieces to order also and make 5-10% extra. Just in case i missed something or there is some other issue. '

If there are any questions and comments then im more than happy to answer.

Again, thank you all for your support and kind words.

I will try to surprise you hopefully next week or so with new pear color, really light, not steamed but dried naturally. Samples are on the way and lets see - hopes are high as i have seen one of our member using it in his build and it looks awesome.

I placed an order with Vahur a couple of weeks ago as I was interested to see if Black Hornbeam might be a suitable substitute for Ebony. So I ordered one piece each of 10mm and 6mm. For such a small order, the postage actually cost more than the timber, but that is not Vahur's fault - I'm kinda used to the extortionist costs of international postage these days! Vahur kindly also included some samples of other timbers, including White Hornbeam, Swiss Pear (both dark and light), Holly, Costello Boxwood, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Delivery time was under two weeks, which is quite exceptional these days - I usually figure on a minimum of a month for international deliveries. Vahur also went to considerable effort to package the timber very securely to prevent any damage during transit.

The timber itself is beautifully milled. It is of the same standard as that which some of us were used to receiving from Jeff Hayes at Hobbymill (US) before he retired, and that is a very high bar indeed.

Full marks to Vahur for both quality of product and customer service - five stars all round 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I highly recommend Hobbymill (EU) as a go-to source of model timber supplies.

Oh, and the answer to my orginal question is yes, I think that Black Hornbeam can be used in place of Ebony. I compared it to a piece of Ebony I had on hand, and it is hard to tell the difference.

    Thank you, Vahur. 😊

  16. Hi everyone,

Hope you all are doing well in these interesting times (if we can call it like that).

Not much to update other than trough luck i was able to stock up my black hornbeam. I sent order in just right before the war and it had been stuck there, but trough my Ukrainian friends it finally arrived. So i should have more than enough for some time :).

Addition to sheets and sheets you can also order bigger sizes and rough cut. Prices according to sizes and spices.

For knife etc makers maybe this would be interesting:

Colored hornbeam 40x40x400 (mm) green, yellow, brown, pink/red, orange blanks 15 eur a piece or 40x40x800 30 eur/pc rough cut.

Sad update is that prices of products have to be adjusted (in reality raised) as everything is getting more and more expensive. Latest Clients have already seen that.

Prices on web arent all correct so best way to still order is to send me a e-mail with requested sizes are spices. Website prices will be updated in new future to give indication.

  18. One addition.

If you need smaller quantity and you could cut your own sheets/strips then contact local knife wood blank suppliers. Also Etsy has some pieces available.

Yes you get smaller pieces but it might be more cost effective in the end.

Note that they might have stabilized hornbeam and that different product. Colored is more like deep dyed.

    Hi,

Yes I have colored hornbeam in stock - black, yellow, brown, green, pink/red.

Shipping to UK up to 1kg (inc packing material) is about 19 eur.

Quality wise it looks marvelous (modeller speaking not salesman). Its not suitable for carving example as its too strong (if i could say that).

Its holds edge super good and also bends well.

If you like i can send you more photos or you can check out web and also Instagram www.instagram.com/hobbymill.eu .

  21. Hi all,

I would say that safest way to buy true EU boxwood is to buy exact piece not logs.

Like many e-shops offer - they have photographed exact piece and then you really see what you get.

Buying raw timber so to say is always a risk. There are standardized quality that has been agreed and then there is quality for ship models :D :D :D .

Example pearwood i received month ago - 20-30% of that is not suitable for ship models unless its painted :( .

Import fees with transport costs might make it yes quite expensive.

I am not familiar with importing wood from another country.

I tried ounce with African boxwood and it was a lot of trouble. If I remember correctly, he said that he could not sell with the bark, because of insects, so there was additional fees for debarking.

Yes some woods are really hard to import, even if you have all needed paperwork.

Easier is to bring in sheets and strips as then they are modelling parts.
