  1. I second the idea of a Vanguard kit for your first model. My first build was the Vanguard Lady Eleanor. If you visit the Vanguard website you can read the instructions for the builds. Great products and instructions.
  2. Bob This model is on my future hope to build list. As a relative newcomer to this hobby I learn so much from reading other members build logs. I especially appreciate build logs that include difficulties and mistakes. It is part of the hobby and I tend to learn quite a bit from others errors. As a perfectionist it helps me to realize mistakes are part of this hobby. I look forward to following your build.
  3. My first kit was the Vanguard Lady Eleanor. The quality of the materials and the instructions were excellent. The finished model does have a few minor mistakes but I am happy with the finished result. As my skills improve building more challenging Vanguard models is definitely in the plans for me. This is definitely a hobby where you get what you pay for. Considering the time and effort a good quality kit is well worth the investment.
  4. I have tried using "frog tape" to mask off my models for painting. Each time I have experienced lifting. Can someone suggest a better tape to use on wood ship models?
  5. My humble method of making strops for blocks by Moxis Article is on this site
  6. I just finished this very build tonight. I have some pictures posted in my build log. Instructions are lacking so make sure to reference the build plan along the way. It was fun to build.
  7. Welcome Harland. I am a newbie and am working on my second model. As others have mentioned it is a great idea to start a build log. I have found other members will always offer help and encouragement. Good luck.
  8. I have been working steadily but it has been slow going. Admittedly I am a slow builder. The second deck has been planked. Lots of fun, its just too bad so much of it will be permanently not visible on the finished model. Work on the state room is done. I added trim around the vents and base boards for a more finished look.
  9. Engine and boiler room have been glued to the main deck. I stained the doors for some contrast to the planking. I also added base boards around the buildings although this was not part of the kit instructions. Instead of using acrylic for the windows I painted drywall mesh tape black and glued in place.
  10. James The model looks terrific! The photos are wonderful to look at. I only wish I could come close to the quality of your work.
  11. The main deck is ready to glued down and the hull planked but first a problem needs to be solved. Many other builders have pointed out that the sternpost is way off from fitting correctly. Others have used various methods to fix the issue. I chose to shave the inside of the sternpost altering the curve and shaping the bow into a little more prominent curve to get a good fix.
  12. Next the main deck was planked. Note that in the partially planked deck picture the original tab cuts were planked over so there was no gap showing.
  13. At this point I went out of order with regard to the directions. I built the main deck buildings (engine room and boiler room) for trial fitting. Other build logs have pointed out that the notches in the deck are cut in the wrong position and needs to be corrected or the second deck will not fit correctly. Using the buildings as my template I located the position where the deck notches should be placed. The notches were cut out and the buildings trial fitted.
  14. Bulkheads were added. After the bulkheads the sternpost was glued on using the edge of the bulkheads for the appropriate angle.
  15. I first saw a model steamboat being built over 35 years ago. I was impressed with the model but never thought that was something I could ever tackle. I was able to locate a kit after AL went out of business. I was not going to do a build log since it looked like this kit would no longer be produced. However, with AL new ownership this kit is available once again. The bulkheads fit snugly and squared easily. The only issue was that bulkheads 4 and 5 were mislabeled. Note that the sternboard was not put on at this time although the instructions indicate to do it. Gluing it on at this point can result in an incorrect angle as noted in other build logs.
  16. How do you mark a model finished in the quick find index?
  17. Current Build

    King of the Mississippi

  18. Have you tried looking at the instruction videos on the Model Space website? They also have a HMS Victory forum where you can post questions.
  19. Great job and a beautiful model. I am in the early stages of building this model (2nd build for me) and your build log is terrific. Reads like an instruction manual for others to follow. Ironically my next build is the Endeavor J Class so I look forward to watching your progress on this build as well.
