  1. Better view of knee arrangement, this one from Lowell's Boat Shop, Amesbury, Massachusetts; constructed for the Charles W. Morgan whaler in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut using original plans from the Beetle Boat Shop
  2. Overhead view of NHA whaleboat Double knees on the second and fifth thwarts, single centered knee on thwarts 1, 3 and 4
  3. The whaleboat on display at the Nantucket Whaling Museum has three different kinds of knees: short double (fore and aft of the thwart) and two different centered long singles, one wedged between wood strips and another without. The oarsman sat upon the side where the knee was wedged between the wood strips and was no doubt much more comfortable than to try and sit on an exposed knee.
  4. thank you, Jim! Tom's videos have been great and have inspired me to go into details that I would have feared before, such as scratchbuilding harpoon heads and oarlocks... Janelle
  5. Mr Hedges, Thank you for posting and your observations of the the Disar Whaleboat model. I am attempting it in bits and pieces as I finish up a Artesiana Latina "Morgan's Whaleboat." I am finding the "instructions" less than helpful and am planning how to address the deficiencies of the Disar model, such as lack of a loggerhead and Lion's tongue... Nice lines but a disappointing lack of detail in my opinion. I look forward to following your build and any hints/observations you can share regarding the construction of the kit! Thanks again and Please keep posting your progress. Happy Holidays, Janelle
  6. thank you for your kind words... I am now using a plank bender as well and it works much better than the crimper tool I had...
  7. Final six months of the build. Had to make several repairs of broken planking while I learned to bend planks, patchwork obvious in photos above. Directions were less than stellar, but I was able to figure most of it out, several times after "ungluing" and restarting. Overall I don't think it's too bad for a first ever kit build. Moved on to dinghy, skiff, and dory and now circling back to try and complete a "Morgans Whaleboat" by Artesania Latina. Directions are long on words, short on diagrams. Looking to find more realistic sails than the burlap provided in the kit.
  8. Please let me know if I am doing this correctly, both technically and socially... Second month of build, started a dinghy to help pass the time while planking... providence WB(3.5).jpg.HEIC providence WB(3.5).jpg.HEIC
  9. Late to the website, but practicing with posting my first build done three years ago... Decades ago I built model airplanes (plastic) and had good eyesight, steady hands and a knack for detail. Fast forward and I have so-so eyesight, a tremor and a desire to be as detailed as I can within my limitations. I love small wooden boats, whaleboats in particular, so I picked up a kit off the internet in 2019. Little did I know that it would take over my discretionary income... Photos from the first few weeks will appear if I figure out the interface. Janelle IMG_2840 (1).HEIC IMG_2841 (1).HEIC IMG_2844.HEIC
  10. Retired and finally building models… Fascinated by whaleboats and small craft, love making tiny accessories and tools to go along with my boats. I get to spend half the year modeling and the other half running an organic apple orchard and gourmet garlic farm. I am eager to learn from those that have more experience since I am too old to make all the mistakes myself before I am cast adrift at sea. Janelle
  11. I am struggling with the Disar Whaleboat kit. Instructions are useless, with microscopic text and poor translation. The booklet lacks many sections/descriptions and the illustrations are not very helpful. If I didn't know how to build a whaleboat already it would be near to impossible with this kit. If you don''t already know how to build a line tub, there is no way to figure it out from their "instructions," the topic is ignored completely. I am hoping to find some information on tips for the build... Janelle
