  1. Pride of Baltimore - Model Shipways

    Completed and cased in 2020.

Love the rake of the masts!

Built following Robert E. Hunt’s “College of Model Shipbuilding” course, simultaneously with the Eagle .

Goal of this project was to gain an understanding of how to rig a a two masted vessel and in particular manufacture the masts, yards, and bowsprit using the lathe, router table (bowsprit octagon section), and Byrnes table saw.  Also to get the vertical alignment of the hull, the masts, and pedestals correct.

Hull primed with rattle can shellac and gesso.  Hull colors are Tamiya Deep Green and Flat Black applied with Talon airbrush.

Bulwarks, deck, masts, yards, booms, gaff, finished with Minwax Ipswich Pine stain. Deck has a furniture paste wax finish.

Masts finished with Vallejo Model Air Mahogany, black areas are Tamiya flat black acrylic both applied with the Talon.  Stained pine readily accommodates the acrylic.  White areas of deck houses brushed out with Vallejo Model Color white.

Rope hanks made using a clothespin technique shown in the Bluejacket Shipcrafters email newsletter.  Blocks stropped with fine wire, also available from Bluejacket.

Tops of deck houses made from scraps of glued up decking (left over from Lackawanna), also available from Bluejacket.  Thought was to give it a try, to save time, however, will not do this going forward with future construction.

Case is my own design.  3/32” acrylic all around, a significant weight and cost saving as compared to cabinet glass.  Maple plywood base, maple moulding and frame; finished with Old Masters Maple stain and paste furniture wax.

  2. Eagle Maine Topsail Coastal Schooner

    Built during 2020.

Vintage Model Shipways kit.  Built out of the box.  Stern letters by Todd Architectural Models.

The point of this project is to graduate from 1 to 2 masts, and focus on shaping the masts and spars and the bowsprit (multiple cross sections along it’s length), nailing down cutting the shoulders for and positioning the mast cross trees, and understanding the rigging.

Solid hull sealed/primed with Zinser rattle can shellac, Krylon white primer, and gesso.  Gesso primer and hull paint, Tamiya Flat Black and Copper acrylic, applied with Iwata RG-3L mini spray gun.  Popular masts turned on the lathe finished with Mineax Ipswich Pine stain.  Gray/White topside finish, Vallejo acrylics, applied with Paasche Talon, over Minwax Ipswich Pine stain.

Case baseboard is 5/8 maple plywood.  Molding and framework is hickory, finished with Old Masters maple stain and furniture wax.  “Glass” is 3/32” Lexan cut in-house.  Moved from glass shop supplied glass to Lexan.

  3. Lackawanna Bluejacket 1/8”

One of my first projects, originally built about 8 years ago, and rebuilt and cased during 2019.

An enjoyable kit to build, and a great first project.  Over time decided it needed to be refurbished because some original work was kind of shabby.  Replaced the original scribbled deck with Bluejacket glued up decking.  Also reworked the rails, refreshed the paint, particularly making the waterline straight along the bow.  Early on my waterlines were a sort of smile, rising at the bow and stern.

Case is of my design and construction; material is maple and tiger maple finished with Old Masters Maple stain and a wax finish coat.

  5. Armed Virginia Sloop - Model Shipways

Built several years ago, following Bob Hunt’s College of Model Shipbuilding Course.   My first serious effort.

Built out of the box, with all kit supplied materials.  Liked cherry stain at the time, hence the color of the masts and the poop deck.

”Dry dock” frame and support structure stained with brown dye.

Case design is my own.  Tiger maple base moulding and frame, with Maple stain and wax finish.

  7. Katy Pilot Boat - Vintage Model Shipways

Katy pilot boat built during 2020.  Vintage kit by Model Shipways.  Built out of the box with some additional Bluejacket blocks.  Case is my own design.

The point of this project is finish experimentation.

Solid pine hull primed with rattle can shellac and gesso.  Lower Hull painted with Ceramac bamboo craft paint, with Wales and upper hull Vallejo black and yellow ochre.  Non toxic waste finish.

Gesso and bamboo applied with Iwata RG3 mini spray gun.  Wales and upper hull painted with Paasche Talon.

Deck is individual planks, stained with Rustoleum Kona stain prior to installation.  This thick stain was applied to one side and edge of each board and allowed to dry.  Boards were then glued to the solid hull, leaving a very bumpy surface with a thick stain finish.  Deck was planed with a Clifton shoulder plane and Veritas mini bull nose plane.

Deck house window is gloss black paint.

Minwax Ipswich Pine finish on remainder, applied with brush.  Mast tops Vallejo black applied with Paasche Talon.

Case moulding, with ogee edge, and frame are Hickory.  Base board is Maple plywood.  All finished with Old Masters Maple Stain.

    ”Glass” is 3/32” Lexan.
