It's beyond my patience to try and fix. A couple of those frames were already weakened from where I accidentally broke them earlier. So I'll probably buy another kit and start over. Lessons learned! -
Well, disaster struck. I used some stronger clamps to bend the first broad plank and the frame lifted out of the building board. When I went to fit it back into the building board I guess I was too forceful and several of the frames broke. 😬 Maybe I'll purchase another of this kit and start over. Or just move on to the 18th Century Longboat I had begun.

Ok, this will be my first wooden ship build. I had started a build thread for the Model Shipways 18th Century Longboat kit. But I felt like that kit was a little too deep of a dive to start out with. So now I'm beginning with the Lowell Grand Banks Dory. I've been working on it for several weeks now. The biggest problem I've run into is forgetting how fragile this wood is. Luckily I was able to painstakingly glue back pieces of the frames that I broke (some more than once). And everything seems to be holding together so far. On to the pictures: Forming the rocker Gluing frames Time for glue... Working on garboard planks Bending Gluing first garboard plank Both glued, commence sanding Inspection They don't line up perfectly at the transom and I really don't want to remove it and start over. So I guess we'll just roll with it and see what happens. That's all for now...

Yes, this helps a lot. Apologies for deleting the question. I didn't think it was worded well (and I'm a little embarrassed). My misunderstanding was thinking that the sanding would go *up* from the bearding line. Also, I clearly didn't understand what beveling meant. So thank you again for the illustration.

Ah, I see now. That's along the lines of what I was thinking. I just wanted to make sure before I began sanding off a bunch of this piece. Thanks!

I'm unclear on the beveling of the false keel. Does the entire false keel, above and outward from the bearding line, need to be sanded down to ~1/32"? I've looked at a few build threads and couldn't get a clear idea of this step.

04/04/21 Well I wasn't planning on starting this one yet. However my airbrush is temporarily out of order. So for the moment I can't finish the Tamiya M4A3E8 Sherman I was close to completing. 😠 Again, this will be my first wooden kit. I may have done a plastic ship or two way back in the day. This is actually the Model Shipways combo kit that came with paint, glue, some tools, etc. The first thing I had to do was to take inventory and orient myself with what was what precisely. And it entailed using a ruler, some masking tape and a pen. I wish I had more exciting progress to post. But I'm still reading through the instructions (again) to come up with an outline. I will definitely have some questions right off the bat. For now, though: Wish me luck!

They really did do a great job! Master and Commander won two Academy Awards and one was for sound editing. It's quite something when watched with a decent surround sound system.

I've been getting back in to plastic models due to the pandemic. It's been really wonderful that there's so much more information available thanks to the Internet. YouTube has been especially helpful. The last models I built were in the late 90's/early 2000's, when expensive magazines where the main source (that I knew of) to learn techniques, etc. So far it's been going well as I learn how to use an airbrush (first one!). After 3 completed kits so far I've definitely learned some important not-to-do's! Because Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series is one of my favorite series of books I've taken an interest in building a wooden ship. I took the plunge with ModelShipways' sale they were having recently. So I now own a 1:24 Lowell Grand Banks Dory kit and a 1:48 18th Century Longboat (combo) kit. I'm looking forward to beginning with the Dory here soon. After I finish up a Tamiya "Easy Eight" Sherman I've been working on. This forum looks like a great place to learn from as I've already been browsing. When I get started I'll be sure to start a build thread. Maybe someday I might be able to build a full size Dory to fish from!
