Now moving onto the masts and rigging. I would be very grateful if someone could tell me if there is there a useful rigging guide I can download anywhere -particularly regarding doing the shrouds & ratlines etc. Many thanks David

I've been making some progress with my build during the latest Covid lockdown despite the vague Mamoli instructions! The build hasn't been helped by some missing materials (readers of this build log will recall that I bought the kit in an Italian junk shop for about $5 -so I can't really complain about missing parts!!!). Despite this I have made reasonable progress over the last couple of months. The outer sheathing has been completed, together with the strakes, decking, aft gallery, forecastle and edge rails (these were a particular issue since the 4mmx2mm walnut lath for the uprights were missing). The Mamoli instructions are really problematic since many of the drawings do not relate to the materials supplied and some instructions are non-existent (e.g. there are no instructions at all related to the aft ensign support structure etc.). Also, there are major discrepancies between the photos of the model on the box and the drawings! Next stage is to finish the hull woodwork & then varnish the woodwork before starting on the rigging. I'm a bit concerned about the type of vanish to use since I've been very unimpressed by modern water based varnishes. I'm thinking of using a satin (eggshell) polyurethane (solvent rather than water based) yacht varnish on the outside of the hull and a matt polyurethane varnish for the decking , but would welcome any comments or suggestions about this.

My opinion is i love mamoli kits. Personal preference. Your doing a great job. Its coming along nicely. Checkout my mamoli build of the Friesland if you have time. The log is still on this  site. Looking forward to the next layer planking.

Starboard side work mostly completed. Going to move on to planking the deck as this kit is proving to be pretty stingy with materials. While other kits I've worked on have always provided plenty of spare wood, I finished planking the lower hull with literally the last piece of wood provided.
My preference is to continue planking the upper hull with mahogany, which will then be covered by printed decorations provided in the kit, but I'm not sure if I will have enough wood.
If anyone has ever worked with pre-printed decorations on card paper, any advice on working with such material will be appreciated. So far, the only thing that I am sure of is that I will complete the hull sanding before installing the decorative card.
I think it also important to note that I purchased this kit several years ago. I believe Mamoli is under new management, so I'm not sure if the wood supply situation has improved. I'm just surprised that materials are so tight, since even cheap kits I've purchased in the past always provided an excess of wood.

More work on the starboard side. For some reason, I've found planking this ship to be a real chore. Happy that most of it seems done. I've also noticed that most of the photos I shoot for this log seem to come in upside down. I eventually figured out that's because I'm left-handed, so I use the shutter button on the left side. When I flip the phone and take pictures with the shutter button on the right side, the photos come in right-side up.

Thank you all for all the likes and comment...appreciate them all,
Just a short update...great weather here today and I'm trying to take advantage and get a lot done, so I'm running between projects

The skylights have been strengthened and trimmed to their final size

The deck houses were prepped by just blacking out the interiors and the skylights were painted with a couple coats of white

Well that's all for now (told you all it was short) hopefully more tomorrow
    THX again

The Pilot House project has come to a satisfactory finish...least its good enough for me...

The aforementioned screen was glued in from the bottom

Microscale Kristal Klear was applied to the windows to simulate glass

    The finished Pilot House...

...still needs to have a coat of sealer applied and the roof detailed and painted, as you can see I went with the traditional white...the ivory I planned to use was bit to yellow for my taste.  I'm currently debating whether to weather lightly or not...

Well that's all for now... thanks for looking in

    Greg,

The following pictures from my Newsboy build may be of assistance. As illustrated, the bulkwalk planks were heavly curved.

I built this kit a while ago. I believe I boiled the wood to soften it and then clamped it around something with a shape similar to the stern. I believe it was a gradual process, with me increasing the bend over several tries, letting the wood dry and then doing the process over again until I got it sort of the correct shape.

Thank you Eric and Glen for the comments and thank you to all for the likes.

The Madawaska/Tennessee artifact arrived today. I don't question it's authenticity but I do question how it was made. The letters and numbers are indented which suggest stamping yet there's no evidence of bulging on the reverse. All the cast makers plates I've seen the letters and numbers are raised.

Another curious fact, the Madawaska was launched in 1865 yet the date is 1866. Once back from her shakedown voyage did the Captain put in a requisition for what he thought was a needed 40 gallon tank to go somewhere aboard the ship? Is that why the name "Madawaska" appears on the tag as it was a speciality item that had to make its way through the yard along with all the other ship's items being made? I do love a good brain teaser, I suspect I'll enjoy many moments conjuring the reasons "why".

I'm absolutely ticked pink to hold and be able to place with the Tennessee model an item 156 years old that was part of the ship no matter how insignificant.

That's right. This small triangle is to avoid a heavy and damaging splash against the waves while pitching.

    Good, interesting work.

Hi all, deck fittings have been added. I’ve seen other posts where custom windows were made and the metal fitting were painted. Not really sure what colors I’d paint the metal and the instructions are beyond awful, so I went with what was included. I am wondering, does anyone have any tips for attaching the deck extension (wales?) around this sharp bend in the stern? I would think the wood would break. I could just do two intersecting pieces and sand them down I suppose, but not sure if there’s and better ways out there.

I have completed planking the deck. I wasn’t certain what order to go in, so I started with the king plank method. I chose a side and, for each line of planks, installed them in a line from the stern to the bow. I alternated rows with the 10cm planks and 8cm planks. At first I tried using contact glue, but it proved to be extremely difficult to work with and seemed to absorb into the wood, or would stick too fast. I ended up slathering on some gorilla wood glue and working in that way. Definitely some room for improvement here, but I’m satisfied with how it turned out for my first at least.

They took the Swedish Vasa partly as an example, and she has those planks too. indeed probably as extra reinforcement against waves

I was looking over photos of the replica ship Batavia that Baker thoughtfully provided. My one takeaway was that I might need to rethink my plan to paint the gilded pieces provided with the kit. I thought ships of the era probably didn't have as much glitter as my kit implied, but the Batavia does seem to have more than I would have thought. Also, looking at the photos, I was wondering what is the point of this planking at the bow. It looks almost like a second layer of planking, maybe to provide extra protection when muscling through the waves? These photos were a big help, so I really appreciate being directed to them.

Moving on to the starboard side. On the port side, I did the second layer of planking by running alternating touches of CA and wood glue on the plank and then applying it to the hull. I found that to be very messy, since anytime the plank touched some already applied wood, the glue would leave a mark. On this side, I'm tacking the plank to the bow with some CA, and then applying the glue to the hull and then pushing the planks into place and then running the plank-bending tool over them to make the glue set quickly. It seems to give me better control so far.
