    Cant frames (fore)
    Happy 4th everyone! 🎆

I started on the cant framing over the weekend. The first frames to go in are cant #1. They will also hold the front of the top jig in place.  I made a slight adjustment to the foot of each cant in order to get a snug fit into the deadwood. While using a machinist square, I moved the frames outward a wee bit beyond the etched line on the strips in order to clear the bearding line. Not much, maybe 1/64" or even less. That was it. I was very surprised to see that the cants went in square to the build board.

The paper template comes in handy as a double check on what you are doing. I actually prefer using it over just relying on the build board plan. The front of the template is at the aft edge of the rabbet as seen from above.

Only ten more to go. Oh, yes I accidentally hit the top of the gammoning knee. Luckily it came off clean for easy replacement later on. Much later on!

    POST Forty-five
As planking continues, I become aware of an undesirable feature developing.
    The word is snying.
In this context it relates to the excessive upward curve of a plank where the centre is higher than the extremities.

    1258
This is a common problem in the bow area and I note on my hull there are slight indications of it developing eight strakes down from the wale.
Probably due to deficiencies in my lining off/and or incorrect tapering, it occurs where the planks are edge bent as they round the bow, and strake upon strake, the effect is magnified.

    1260
My solution is to remove a section of the last fixed bow plank, and spile in a new section to reduce the extremity of the curve for the next plank to lie against.

    1261
Fortunately, the section came away cleanly without too much effort.

    1262
The spiled insert is not easy to spot and is a better option than carrying on regardless with the result of visible excessive snying.

    1263
With ten strakes now completed each side I am now below the waterline, and the planking runs looks better to my eye.

    1268

    1277
I’m about a third of the way down the hull, I will now add a further strake above the Garboard, re-check the strake arrangement, and carry on.........

I have done a little bit more on the deck planking. I have found it necessary to use plank off cuts to hold some of the deck planks in place as the glue cures to ensure the planks are nice and snug to the adjacent planks.

I will be AWOL for the next 9+ days as my wife and I take a nice train journey to Basel (Switzerland), via Paris (and the riots) and then will enjoy a 5 star cruise up the Rhine to Dusseldorf, with plenty of places to visit, including:
    a) Lucerne and Bernese Oberland
    b) The Black Forest
    c) Strasbourg
    d) Speyer
    e) Rudesheim, Rhine Gorge and Koblenz
    f) Cologne

    Post Forty-four
    The first Band.
I am using fairly scale lengths with a 140mm maximum and around 45mm minimum lengths.

    1219
I am not going for a set sequence of repeat patterns, but I am giving mind to the positions of butts on adjacent strakes.
For deck planking I will take a more structured approach.

    1224
I plank side and side about, and Ca is used throughout, with a pot of Acetone handy for wiping excess from plank faces as I go along.

    1251
The required shape for the bow timbers is transferred to the planks, which are dampened, tapered, edge bent, bevelled, and generally fettled to fit.
I found this necessary from around Bulkhead five to the stem.

    1231

    1253
One of the advantages of the Indy hull is that apart from the bow area there are long sections of using full width planks which proceeds quite quickly.

    1247
Looking a bit rough at this stage, but I now need to re-mark the hull for the next band of planking.
    Onwards….

Am working on Speedy V2023 right now, almost completed the overhaul.

What started as a simple 'Careening' for this 'slight' redesign has somehow turned into  a 'Middling-Large Repair'

Here are the 4 x 1mm laser cut sheets (old kit had half a sheet in total). I just need to do a final check of these parts..

(Still waiting for the photo etched sheets to come from Italy for Trial Cutter)

ETA, as the Speedy model will be only half built, to replace build pics in the new manual, the second planking is Tanganyika - I prefer this as it only took me 6 hours to plank the hull

    Deck Planking – Update
I realised that I had omitted any photos of the central section deck planking in my last post, so I took a few pictures showing this aspect.

The first photo shows the current state of the gun deck planking.

The next few photos are some close ups of the different central openings. As each opening was made I did make sure the various deck items would fit be it hatches, bitts, masts, etc.

As mention in the last post as the planking approaches the right-hand side inner bulwarks I would have to include the openings for the cannons. As can be seen in the next set of photo’s I have now created the first two openings, one for the bow and one for the aft cannons. These openings are checked with the locating piece of the cannon.

Just a quick test of the frames in position.  This is all just dry fit.  Everything looks great so far.

I am headed away tomorrow morning on a short road trip so no shop time.   But when I get back work will resume on the SOPHIA ROSE and SPEEDWELL.  These boats were meant to be beached as a fun fact when room at the wharf was not plentiful.  Anywhere from 2 to 5 fisherman were on these small boats.

    Phase 2 - Cannon

I’m still here, I haven’t a lot of ship time lately due tog lots of summer activities and travel.

I have managed to complete another group of nine cannon bringing my total to 17 with eight more to go on the main deck. This is how I’m thinking of mounting them 😄

A coat of Admiralty Ironworks Black, followed by Doc O'Briens Rusty Red weathering powder.

Completed carriages airbrushed red.  I was surprised how much fine red dust ended up in my air filtration system - it even gave me a clean filters warning. I of course wore a mask and saw first hand the reason why.

Adding WOP to wheels and hanging them out to dry. One thing I can’t seem to sort out is how to get completely clean wheels without removing too much wood, at this point thought it’s more important to me to be consist with my dirty wheels.

I won’t bore you further with my process again, I covered it in detail back in post 361 if you’re interested. I just did it all again for nine more (one is for my 6 year old grandson, he asked me to make him one) and will again for the remaining eight, and once again later for the eight q-deck and forecastle guns. Perhaps of passing interest, each cannon consists of 28 separate parts. No shortcuts here, just gotta get in and do it.

One thing I brushed over in the earlier post was the capsquares. Doing them with the hinge, latch, and pin is a bit of a fun getting the four pieces consisting of 30 pound black monofilament, 24 gauge wire, and black paper to come together to fit there properly on top of the carriage. I can’t say enough about the power of powder in the form of Doc O’Briens Weathering Powders. Somehow Rusty Red combines with the plastic cannon and Ironworks Black paint to create an nice gun metal finish. I took it one step further and also added it to the capsquares after first also painting them with the Ironworks Black. Once buffed up it brings all the plastic, wire, and paper into a uniform appearance creating a nice looking brushed metal appearance (at least mini-me thinks so). A lot of time spent making these in addition to assembling the cannon - well worth it.

It’s starting to look like a warship (they’re just sitting there temporarily).  I was going to take a break from them and build the capstan or the stove, but now I think I’ll go ahead and make the remaining main deck guns while the steps are fresh.

Thanks for stopping by, hope you’re all enjoying the summer. I’m having eggs for breakfast these days since I can just cook them out on my Texas driveway.

I finished the elm tree pumps but have decided to not install them until later. the handles are too delicate and are just asking to get broken, especially when the waist work begins (Chapter 9 I think).

Will reevaluate after I get done with Chapter 8 which starts NOW!

Chain pump handles completed and installed (maybe some touch-up black paint necessary).

Elm Tree pumps are under construction.

Need to glue in the last two deck beams and install the last four knees.

Getting close to the end of Chapter 7.  😀
