A very nice micro drill that is inexpensive and I use it all the time is available on Ebay. It comes with some drills and diamonds and cut off wheels for under $20 I make a small starter point with a #11 xacto blade so the drill doesn’t skip. Works well and drills great. Mine is 2 years old and still works fine. Best part is you hold it like a pen and it is very accurate. Best Rick

Don’t feel bad we all have been very anxious to get on with our builds and in the end it always makes the problem worse. That is why most of us have more than one build at the same time. Between paint drying, ordering needed parts etc it takes our minds off the problem and before you know it the problem is over and we can continue without making the problem worse. I go by the saying Time Heals All Wounds and in this case it will. Best Rick

Thanks for the compliment. The answer is no my son and I are building the Midwest Chesapeake Crabbing Skiff. I bought the kit for him and I because he plans on building the real thing and it is very similar. He is an architect and is designing a kit to be laser cut of the boat he wants to build and we plan on building that one together before he builds the real thing. We will post a joint log when we start. Like most of modelers on this forum I have 3 ships in progress at the same time. Best Rick

Welcome Your planking looks great. My son and are building a kit at the same time even being a continent away. He’s in Ca and I am in Mass. We do it by phone 5 AM his time and 8AM my time. It’s a shame you didn’t have the opportunity to do it with your dad. It’s a great bonding experience. It’s my son’s first boat build but he is learning fast. One thing to remember You learn more from your mistakes than your successes!!! Your build looks great and your dad would be mighty proud of you. Best Rick (RVB)

Welcome. I built the lobster smack in between waiting for parts and drying time on another model. It’s a fun and enjoyable build. Very nice work ! Best RVB

I use the same technique often. It works very well. I have more photocopies all over my work area than parts. I agree it keeps all the original plans nice. When I get done I keep them in a binder for later reference if needed. It also organizes the build. As you do I copy the bulkheads, cut them out and paste them to the bulkheads then fair them to the pattern lines. The copies at 100% are extremely accurate. Below are photos of the Bluenose keel that was broken and missing part of it. The copy made it way it an easy repair. As always Best Rick (RVB)

I’m rescuing an Amati Bluenose kit that was started 17 or more years ago and was listed on eBay . It is one that’s currently in progress and there is a log build (1900 -present). The planking was hap hazardly started , the decking was atrocious and parts were missing and broken. I offered the owner a very low offer and he took it. I am just starting the rigging and it’s turning out well. Amati kits are pretty good but in my opinion not as good as Model shipways. After I finish the Bluenose ( which will be soon) I will start the Endevour. Best Again RVB

Sounds like we all have the same bad habits. I am also working on 3 at the same time with 2 more waiting on the sidelines. I totally agree it’s nice to move between builds while one is drying another waiting for small parts to come in and the third begging for my attention. By the way one of the kits sitting on the sidelines is the Amati Endevour. Looks like I will be following your build also Terry. Best RVB

Thanks Gregg i just ordered model shipways brass belaying pins vs the Amati ones supplied. I also have beautiful blocks to use in the rigging. I agree with you that builds look nicer with standing rigging vs sails which hide detail. By the way I have the hull of model shipways USS Constitution almost finished. I need to get back to it. This may sound crazy but I have 2 or 3 boats presently in progress. I am sure there a lot of us modelers in the same position (Some finished Some not) Enjoy your model shipways USS Constitution build. It is quite the undertaking. a

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
