  2. Hello I translated a news article from colombian magazine semana.com to share some details. Hope you find it interesting King Felipe V de España needed the money to pay for the war with the american independanse armies. It had been six years since the king had received any money to Spain. Galeon San Jose was loaded with the valuables acumulated during this period. During the loading of the ship it was kept extremely secret and only the ships captain and the comander of the Cartagena spanish base new of the contents. The captains ship log can be seen at the museum in Seville and it was a key piece of evidense to find the galeon. Personal and comercial loads was done in sealed wood crates and they paid freight charges by the weight. Peru's vice king's family was among the people on board along with their valuables that must have been large. Did the galeon blow up No acording to the graphic evidence taken at site Ship Load It carried emeralds, gold ans silver bricks, the tax collected over several years and other valuable objects Rescue company Sea Search Armada (SSA) Colombia will keep 50% of the recued treasure. They will build a museum in honor of the ship. Relatives of the ships ocupants will probably sue to get their share.

  4. Hello I am referring to the year 1825 for a 64 gun ordered by the new Colombian gov. and the builder was Henry Eckford
  5. Hello all I have a small question. When the foreign nations ordered ships of the line in the US, was the ship given the US registered name or the foreign name? I know that when the ship was finished it would have the US flag while in US waters. Did the ship builders have to register the ship before transfering to new foreign owner? And where was it registered?
  6. Hello Tadeusz I want to thank you for all the hard and great work you put into this post. I have learned a lot from it. Please keep going
  7. Hello I have seen the nice project you have of the Ohio and would like to know if you ever found the plans for the ship. I have aldo been looking for a set of plans but I am in South America and is just not possible to get one. I will appreciate your input on this. Thanks
  8. I have been searching for items belonging to Fragata Colombia for several years and while living in US I had seen a picture of a carronade on top of Guayaquil's highest hill. I went to Guayaquil while in Ecuador and climbed more than 400 steps with my knees screeming but it was a lifetime oportunity. I took paper, pencil,a tape measure, camera and a mold copier. As soonas I got to the top I saw seven carronades in line and I was so happy. Finally I had found an important piece of missing history. Took several pictures and upon very detailed inspection I saw a royal crown with WP initials and I got supicious something didn't look right. I discovered with much dissapointment the dam carronades were made of fiverglass ! On the distance they look so real ! After arriving at home I had to apply ice in my knees ! Here I post the pictures. Now I will have a harder task of finding out the source of the mold for the plastic canons.
  9. HELLO I AM MAKING SHIP DRAWINGS BUT HAS TAKEN ME THREE YEARS ALREADY TO GET INFO ON SHIP LITLE AT A TIME. INFO IS VERY SCARCE AND FOR SHIP DESIGN I HAVE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION SHIPS MADE BY HENRY ECKFORD AND OTHER DESIGNS OF THAT TIME. HOPEFULLY I WILL BUILD A MODEL. WOODS ARE VERY CHEAP HERE BUT I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TYPE TO USE. SHIP MODEL MAKERS ARE MOSTLY IN EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA WHERE MATERIALS ARE DIFFERENT. I WILL HAVE TO MAKE ALMOST EVERYTHING. SUGESTIONS AS TO WHAT TYPE OF WOOD I CAN USE THAT IS INDIGINOUS TO SOUTH AMERICA WOULD BE GREAT. OH WHY SO MUCH WORK JUST FOR A SHIP?. IT IS A FAMILY AFFAIR THAT BEGAN FROM ALL FAMILIY HAVING HEARD STORIES ABOUT OUR ANCESTORS BUT IT WAS ONLY STORIES. THIS IS THE REASON I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE HISTORY AND IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFULL LESSON. I NEVER IMAGINED IT WOULD GET ME THIS FAR. MY OBJECTIVE IS TO WRITE A BOOK FOR THE FAMILY AND FOR ALL INTERESTED IN SOUTH AMERICAN HISTORY. I WOULD LOVE TO GET SHIP PLANS FOR HENRY ECKFORD DESIGNS.
  10. AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHING AND A TRIP TO ECUADOR I FINALLY FOUND THE LOCATION OF THE REMAINING CANNONS BELONGING TO FRAGATA COLOMBIA BUILT IN NEW YORK BY HENRY ECKFORD IN 1825. THIS DISCOVERY ALSO CLEARS THE RECORD FOR THE CANNONS MATERIAL FOR WHICH A LOT OF SPECULATION HAD BEEN BUILT WITH NO EVIDENCE TO CORROBORATE IT. EVEN THE ECUADOREAN NAVY Instituto de Historia Marítima (INHIMA) IN GUAYAQUIL DOS NOT KNOW THE ORIGIN OR MATERIAL USED IN THE CANNONS. MY FIRST LEAD WAS A COURT RECORD IN THE CITI OF NEW YORK WHERE ECKFORDS DECENDANTS WERE BEING SUED FOR A DEBT HE SUSTAINED WITH A SUPPLIER. IN THE DOCUMENTS I FOUND THE REFERENCE TO WEST POINT FOUNDRY, AS ONE OF THE SUPPLIES GIVEN TO ECKFORD FOR THE SHIP AROUND THOSE YEARS. THIS PROVED ECKFORD DID BUSSINESS WITH WEST POINT FOUNDRY. THIS SET MY COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION. THE NAVY HISTORIAN FOR INHIMA HAD TOLD ME ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THE CANNONS IN THE CITI. MY TRIP CONCLUDED WITH MY VISIT TO GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR TWO MONTHS AGO. THE CANNONS ARE SCATTERED AROUND THE CITI AND SOME ARE BEING HELD BY PRIVATE PERSONS. THE FIRST TWO CANNONS I SAW , ARE LOCATED NEXT TO CERRO SANTA ANA AND HAVE BEEN DETERIORATED OVER THE YEARS DUE TO LACK OF MAINTENANCE, THE INITIALS WPF(WEST POINT FOUNDRY) ON THE TRUNIONS WERE NOT THERE. I TOOK DETAILED DIMENTIONS AND PICTURES FOR THE CANNONS AND ARE IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING TECHNICAL DRAWINGS. THEY ARE 10 FT 2IN LONG,BORE SIZE IS 6.625 WHICH MAKES IT A 32 POUNDER. I WENT TO SECOND SITE AND FOUND TWO MORE CANNONS AND OH BOY WAS I HAPPY TO SEE THE WPF MARKS. AFTER SEARCHING WITHOUT SUCCESS FOR YEARS I FINALLY FOUND THE MISSING LINK. BUT THERE IS NO POINT IN ME KNOWING THIS HSTORICAL FACT WITHOUT SHARING IT WITH OTHERS. SO HERE ARE THE PICTURES AND HOPE YOU CAN GIVE ADDITIONAL INFO ON THE CANNONS. ANY THOUGHTS ON DESIGNER, MAYBE AMSTRONG OR BLOOMFIELD? ANY IDEAS ON THIS ARE WELLCOME.
