How about one of the Mini Mamoli line? They are solid hulls that she could paint, minimal parts and something like their Britannia, America or Bluenose would look pretty good.

I would recommend something in plastic, like a car or truck, in 1:24 or 1:48 scale.  Or for wood, a Midwest brand kit if you can find any. They stopped making kits but I have seen some in hobby stores or maybe ebay but if ebay watch out for price gouging, these kits are old.  The key is more teaching them how to follow instructions and visualized the piece.

I think that whatever you choose she’ll have a fond memory of the time; I also think that completing any model at 6 is a very proud accomplishment. It may be a lot to find a model that you’re able to build at 6 that you’re still “proud” of in a modeling sense much later. I’d love to see what people suggest though as I may try to get my 7 year old or eventually 3 year old interested in the hobby.

Maybe something like the Optimist Dinghy from MarisStella? http://www.marisstella.hr/gotovi_modeli_galery.php?id=32&tip=2&optimist-dinghy39cm-1-6

My 6 year old granddaughter wants to build a ship with me. I’m trying to find a very basic ship we can do, but she does most the work. And that we can start and finish over the summer.

Problem kits that basic seem mostly like junk. I’d like it to be something she’ll be proud of years from now and a fond memory of time with us together. It won’t be that if it’s junk or I have to do the work.

    Any recommendations appreciated...

Here is my Cutter Cheerful for my first scratch build, it’s not quite done yet.
Thanks @Chuck for amazing material. The task ahead is daunting but I have great wood, plans, guidance, and mini-kits to get there. The Alaskan Yellow Cedar is like butter.

Alright gentlemens, enough discussion and speculation on board directions inside this buildlog.  Interesting topic if someone want to create a thread on it seperately. But too much discussion here simply ruins for those who want to follow the build. Thanks 4 understanding.

Yes i agree. I dont want to build my ships totally wrong but i mostly just want nice looking models to display in my home. Some variation between each one is just good in my opinion. And frankly, who will notice a thing like that besides like some of the People in this forum.

I think sometimes “because it looks good” is enough of an answer. If we’re not under contract to a museum we’re ok making a few aesthetic decisions on our own.

Here's what I wrote in my Speedy log in response to the same question:

"I've had a word with Chris, and he decided to go with vertical planking on Speedy based on his research which found many contemporary model pictures showing similar sized and period models with the stern planking running vertically, not horizontal or angled. Looking at my copy of the AOTS book on Alert I noticed that the transom had horizontal beams as well as vertical frames. The Alert book showed the transom planked horizontally, but depending on how the beams tied into the frames I imagine vertical planks would be just as possible as horizontal. I'm going to leave the planks as they are, mainly because of Chris's research, but also I quite like the alternating pattern of vertical-horizontal-vertical".

I was referring to the outside of the hull. I know we just glue on the strips, but for beginners to get them lined up and spaced properly will be a good test.  I really hope they sell well, its important beginners have a good first experience. For me, although I'd built the Blue Nose first, I really learned the good stuff from building the Virginia AVS using a detailed practicum from Bob Hunt. I still use that for reference on rigging methods (that I forget between models).  So my recommendation is the model itself is of course important, but the accompanying instructions - which you are really good at. The beginner won't have a clue about using plans, but learning all the steps and how to do that will lead them to their next purchase of the Alert or Speedy 🙂

Nice looking little boats - I'm thinking that side moulding might be a challenge for a beginner but I'm sure you explain it well in your instructions. This is the kind of kit I'd like to get my grandson when he gets a bit older, I wish you the best of luck in finding a market for it. There is just so much mass produced, but heavily marketed crap, on the places and website beginners would go to look I hope they can separate from all that to find a kit of this quality. I'm a fan.

I think this is a great idea, us average guys always have fun with rabbits and bearding lines...not me.  I look forward to how this turns out applied to a larger model.

This is how it looks after sanding.  Boxwood is definitely the best mtrl to work with. Now on to trimming gunports and adding the whales.

Great job on planking. The pear wood is nice, I wish I’d had the chance for the boxwood option. I can’t even find it to buy.  Yours looks great.

Looks can be very deceptive. Not so neat in some places when you are up close to my Speedy build

Great job on coppering but when I do my Speedy I am going to opt out. I am not really the biggest fan of coppering.

This morning I completed the sanding of the hull. I applied a small drop of my super phatic glue where there were some very minor gaps and then sanded over so the sawdust could bind with the glue. It seemed to work out very nicely.

I also painted the gun port openings red. I may still line the gun ports at a later stage, but this will be after I have assembled the gun carriages and after I have checked to see if there is any alignment issues with adding linings.

I have also fitted the prow, keel and rudder posts as well.

Ha, it took me a few minutes but I see what you mean (and I’m glad I posted the picture). I shaped it based off the other side (which wasn’t the best idea). I’m not going to change it now (first layer reasoning) but thank you for pointing out my error so I can correct it on the 2nd planking!

This is a fantastic approach...use pencil to draw the planks then you can redesign it every year🤣😂

I’m a bit concerned about several builders near running out of strips both first and second planking...

we all have our methods around gun ports, thanks for sharing yours.  I like the idea of a file with a single face, I need to find one of those.

I sometimes cut a jig from scrap about 3-4mm height, long enough to hold on to, and the exact width of the gun port. Then attach 220 to one width side and 320 to the other with double sided tape and use it for a “file.” Being the exact width of the gun port and smooth wood on the sides gives me consistency.

    Looking good!
