    Upper poop deck fitted.
Stem bulkhead planked and doors fitted,  lead foil as roofing to roundhouses.
Catheads for photo only.  Will be attached later.

First hull planking fixed,  filled,   whitewashed and marked up ready for second planking.
This is a big fat boat and planking took for ever.
Waterline marked but feels too high.   Needs dropping 12mm.
Will have to do more research before I settle on this location.
The supplied plans are no use at all,  the side elevations differ significantly.
Bulkheads 9 and 11 were too low over middle third.
Didn't spot this until after planking.   This was both sides and took a fair bit of filling.

Hi and, thanks for the likes.
After a careful examination of Mark Tiedens build log I have been trying to sort out the stern.
The parts provided in my kit don't match the instruction book and the plans (lol) are no help at all.
In addition the stern side cheeks mark 29 are approx 4mm too long and protrude below
the stern piece.  They lock into place so can't really be fixed incorrectly. I have corrected these.
I have decided on the following approach  ---
The stern piece is attached and is not moving.
The second planking will be extended to meet the stern piece at the higher verandah and a door
for access into the high level cabins provided in the sides.
I may have to scratch build the side windows.  Will visit this after second planking is fixed.
Next  -  the top moulding piece mark 70 goes down both sides of the hull and across the bowsprit deck
above the two access doors.  Instructions say  "use a small triangular file to form a groove down the centre
of 2 x 5mm sapele strips. Then sand to form the B shaped moulding.  Not happening.
Will fabricate using 2x5 strip with 1x1 strips both sides.  Artisania Latina make a set of micro planes
which would be ideal for profiling mouldings but don't offer them for sale in Great Britain.
Last problem  -- The top moulding across the bowsprit deck clashes with the two door openings in the bulkhead.
After a close examination of the instructions it appears that the doorways have been cut 5 to 6mm too high.
This one is easy to correct.
Obviously the photo's were taken during building of the prototype and the laser cut sheets produced afterwards.
This has been a challenging build from day 1 and I have to say I am enjoying every minute of it.
It is not just a case of   -  nail part A to part 58 and stick it in a display case.
Neither is it a kit for the absolute beginner.   It is building into a sturdy good looking model.
Will admit I am spending as much time staring at it and thinking about the next stage as I am building it.
This is a very absorbing kit and a cheap hobby.

    Regards,

    Sam.

Thanks Mark, she was built in 1749 for King George II.

That puts her 15 years ahead of Endeavour and while the replica Endeavour is clearly not the original it is regarded as one of the most accurate replicas around so I'm using my knowledge of her to guide my thinking on this build, same country, same era, same navy and basically the same size so there are bound to be many similarities and that thinking has helped me understand and in many cases change what the drawings and instructions say to do

I've made a bit more progress with the side windows done, and wasn't that a fiddly job!
I've also fitted the side rubbing strakes, I was originally going to paint them black but decided against it reasoning that black would be somewhat overpowering and the hull will be pretty heavily decorated so too much detail I think.

The downside of not painting the strakes is I had screw clamp holes to fill and try and hide. I used a hole punch to cut bungs from scrap walnut which I have glued into the holes and after a good sand they don't look bad. We'll see once I get some varnish on.

I've got a bit ahead of the instructions because, one - I needed a break from woodwork, two - I'm finding more and more that the castings, plans and dimensions rarely match so I'm laying out all the exterior decoration now so I can make sure everything will fit properly before putting woodwork in the way.

And if one doesn't like the story of the Tuunbaq one can always loose oneself in all the detail they chucked into this production. The ships, the clothing etc etc. more here
To fully understand the story of the monster, reading the book is necessary. But even without that part, scurvy, botulism, consumption, freezing and starving is terrifying enough....

That link is a very interesting read, thanks (Note: it contains spoilers) .... '
Historical Reference: Erebus and Terror were among the first Royal Navy sailing vessels to be converted to screw propulsion. This was accomplished by installing railway locomotives in their holds. Peter Carney has conducted extensive research on this conversion and has determined that Archimedes and Croydon (shown here), identical locomotive engines, were likely candidates. This is the only known plan of the Croydon type engine.'

And the series production team have got CGI and green screen work down to a fine art .... it really is now almost impossible to tell CGI from reality.

I've just watched the 1st episode on the BBC iPlayer and it's a bit gloomy and foreboding but, as mentioned, the attention to detail is very realistic. So the scene is now set for whatever episode 2 brings 🙂

puckotred reacted to Barbossa in French Frigate by Barbossa - 1/64 - POB based on La Vénus (ANCRE) - semi-scratch
    Finished deck planking and gratings.
The latter were purchased. Why am I thinking about Belgian Waffles ?

Many French ships seem to have this characteristic :  darker (sometimes black) strips are embedded inside the deck planking. Although I  can only guess the purpose, I copied the idea as it is pleasing to the eye. As a matter of exercise,  planks were a bit tapered towards the bow. I'm planning to implement this on the forecastle, according to plan.

Put her alongside HMS Diana, from which I removed the dust. Regarding this matter, a solution is in the making (it's about time, shame on me).
The photo is deceiving : HMS Diana is not that smaller, in real.

    Dear friends,
I am very grateful and honored reading your kind words and feel your support. Thank you all very much, I do appreciate your feedback a lot.
Th Royal Katherine has been finished a few days ago, this build took me almost four years and approximate 7000hours of work and studying.

I am sorry that my husband could not see the completion of the model, but he supported me a lot in my hobby and shared the successes and joy of building models with me.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have helped me and followed my work through this forum.
A few days ago there was a nice report about my work on card models on Czech television. It was also dedicated to my husband, with whom I wanted to say goodbye for the last time. You can watch the report here, but it is in Czech languauge:

And here you can see plenty of pics of my largest finished model - the Royal Katherine - I consider her the best ship of all I have ever created:
