Originally started based on an old kit, the changes made to the model are so significant, that it is not really a model based on a kit naymore. I changed the complete design, including sratchbuild superstructures and carvings. I am not really sure ift it should categorised as scratch build. I am happy to move it to kit-build.
This is a modell of the Dutch two-decker, known as the "Hohenzollern Modell". Finished early this summer, it is based on Mamolis Friesland kit. The ship has been converted where necessary, to match the research of Heinrich Winter. The build has been based on his book and extensive internet research. One of the still existing models, that I have also used as a reference is that of the "Hollandia", on Display in the Dutch Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. I didn't name the model. In the nameplate, that I carved from pearwood, I just gave the generic term Nederlandse Oorlogship, which translates to dutch warship. There is no evidence of a name. Even Winter in his book wasn't able to give a certain name, although his research led to a few possible candidates, such as the "Jonge Prins", meaning the young prince, and a few others. As the model pretty much stands for the genral type of dutch warships in the 17th century, I think not naming it is a valid option. The overall appearence of the wood I used is quite dark. I decided on these dark colors, because I wanted to have the warm look of aged wood. I do like the look of the original dockyard models, that have darkend over hundrets of years, and I like my models being close to this museum character. Tom
