Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
As the origin of this topic please feel free to keep this going , I know nothing about the variuos types of saws and am interested to learn anything i can , so i repeat feel free to voice all opinions and views they are of interest to all . Cheers Boyd -
Planking going reasonably smoothly, got a good long day at it to-day . spent a lot of time preparing the strips and trying to keep a constant color ,discovered that even changing the direction of the grain can make a noticable difference . first pic shows wrong way and second the same plank ,same side ,but turned end to end . thought this worth a mention for anyone new to planking ? Fairly straightforward once i got the butt system worked out , there is still some variation in color and i hope it won,t be exagerated by the varnish ,. Am wondering is this the same with all maple and all lighter color woods , Would lime have been a better , easier choise ?? Or do i need to change my wood supplier ?? Time will tell . As i thought the trimming of the deck to fit will leave me an uneven edge but i am hoping this can be solved ,hidden by using a wider plank along the edges and might mean i can joggle , if that,s the correct term , the curve at the bow ? On a lighter note the last pic show,s a small accident , none killed but 3 crew injured , . My main concern is how to hide it , been thinking maybe a box or even a couple of coiles of rope ??

Can,t argue with that !!!!!!!!!! -
I have never copper plated so maybe this is daft but i think i read where some paint the hull copper before plating which would mean that any spaces would not be as noticable . Just a thought !!

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Richard , don,t stop now it,s getting interesting -
Just spent a couple of hours selecting the maple strips for the top deck , Finished up with 15 out of 78 which are a similiar shade and texture hopefully this will be enough but still have a few second choise in reserve I think i,ll leave the hatches etc untill after planking ,easier fitted ! The difference in color in planking on lower deck is very noticeable from certain angles ,not as much from others ,i just hope final fittings and rigging etc will hide it Weather here is deteriating so mite get a couple of long days at the decking , looking forward to it after the cannon rigging !!!

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW

I have most of the planking on my present build finished and will take 2-3 years probably to finish ,so unless i start a second build i wouldn,t get much use out of it for a while ,am thinking more now on a dust collection system ,as i started using my lathe and find the dust a problem As regards buying a cheaper version i think it would be better waiting and buying the best ,a Byrnes saw.!!!!!! -
Now i don,t feel so bad Keith , I don,t think maybe they intended the cannons to be rigged and really the side rigging is barely visible , so rather than dislocate your arm to fit them they might not be missed ,but it,s your call ?? Im about to start sorting through about 80 strips of maple to see if i can find enough the same to plank the upper decks ,don,t want a repeat of the lower one !!!

think i have finally finished the gun deck , No doubt there will be something to add later on but at present this is all i can think of ? A couple of things worth mentioning , the variation in deck color should have been corrected at the time ,and in hindsight should not have been left as is but i can,t bear the thought of ripping it up . To be honest it shows up more on the pic than in real life and i had thought that the next deck would have hidden it more ,but lesson learned for the upper deck .Pick your timber !!!!! the gratings are not to my liking , i cut the ply ones out and fitted new frames ,but when varnished some of the ply went a lot darker than i thought , again a different aproach will be used on the top deck . I stuck a couple of barrels in , probably not in the proper place but thought they might add to the look ? I can,t imagine any circumstances in real life when cannons would be rigged like this but it keeps everything nice and tidy and anyway this ain,t real life !! As you can see i have dry fitted the main deck and it needed a lot of trimming again in hindsight it should have been fitted earlier as per plans ,but i thought i was being clever leaving myself room to work at the cannons , It,s possible it will cause more problems when planking ,but time will tell , after all problems are for solving . As usual i will replace all the ply fittings on the main deck and dry fit as far in advance as possible. I,m glad to finish the cannons ,those 2mm blocks can try your patience and although there are more to make for the top deck a break is welcome

Now thats what i call cannons , At that scale there is no limit to the detail you can add. Am really looking forward to seeing how you complete it .Are all parts provided or are you scratching much of it .??? Boyd

Tks David , Im settling into a routine of spending 3 days working out how to do something that then only takes 1 day to complete , but that said i really am enjoying it ,each new stage has it,s different challanges and i think thats become part of the attraction .

Thanks seamy ,I have seen these , the work is brilliant ,and makes me green with envy . How do they do it ?? everything is so crisp!! I notice though that he didn,t fully rig his cannons , sometimes less is more !! Maybe i should take a hint . I hope anyone reading my log dosen,t think this is my build . if only , i can always live in hope ?

Spent the last couple of days figuring out the rigging of the cannons , I finaly decided on a variation of the pic that keith sent me It tidies all the rope and a small spot of ca under the front axel kept the whole thing in place , leaving me just enough room to fit the eyelet . I don,t want any of these carriages coming lose at a later stage , when the upper deck has been fitted so i went for a braces and belt method of fixing them in place , As well as sanding the bottom of the wheels and gluing with wood glue i pushed a fine pin through the base of each carriage and with a spot of ca pushed it into the deck This method seems to have worked well as i had diffs removing one for realighment .!! Now for the tricky bit , i have searched the forum for a definitive method of rigging the blocks on a cannon , something that looks right and if possible is simple and easy to construct ,and then attempted a few experiments of my own . Fortunately the Admiral was away to-day so i had sole use of the i-pad to take as many pics as i liked so i took a few of my progress through a very frustrating day . Not all my attempts are covered here only ones i remembered to take a pic off , i went from making my own blocks to at one stage deciding to leave them out altogether considered this mite look alright from a distance , but when i looked at the pic decided it wasn,t good enough !! Then tried 3mm blocks with the hooks run through them ,but when fitted they looked to big The problem is with the cannons run out there is very little room between the blocks and when hooks are added it,s reduced even more Tried using finner thread and filling down the blocks ,but it was to long and thin looking I remembered i had some 2mm blocks left from the Cruiser build ,and then set about making as small a hook as possible . I wanted the hooks to be black to stand out against the brass eyelets , the following pis show the process i think i will use At least thats the first one finished Quick check for alignment To-morrows work awaits me ,hope this post wasn,t to long and boring but i just thought i would try to explain my thought process ,what little there is of it .???

Still workings on the cannon rigging ,decided to go ahead and use the rope provided so i stretched it out and give it a coat o well thinned wood glue as well as stopping it unraveling it took the bright whiteness of it ,and also did away with the fuss . Before and after I then measured out the required lengths approx 3 times the length of the cannon barrel plus 1 cm either end for serving . Although these will not really be seen i decided to try out Alexy,s serving machine and use them to practice on The power supplies have not arrived yet but for work this delicate i would not have used it anyway I did add a small hook just to save taping the loop every time and it worked a treat once i trimed it down a couple of times It certainly worked well for my first attempt and once set up made a very fiddely process quite straight forward and a lot quicker Thanks Alexy. A spot of watery woodglue and a trim and i,m happy Of course things can,t keep going smoothly ,i now find i have a lot of rope to contend with when i dry fitted a few . But i,ll sleep on it , if necessary i can shorten them ,but only as a last resort???

Next stage has been getting the cannons ready , The plan is to finish the third deck before putting on the top deck ,simply to give myself room to work , the only downside i can think of is that i will have to split the ply false deck to get it fitted but i don,t think this should cause many problems , i,ve heard that before . ?? As you will know i decided to discard the plastic gun carriages provided and after a few trials have finally come up with a design that pleases me .A fair bit of brass involved but i have decided i like the look of brass with the natural wood so will probably use it where i think through the build . I finished up painting the cannons gun metal , having tried a couple of blacking solutions with rather unpredictable results and i although it spoils my non paint plan i think the result suits the build . first pic shows how many attach the rope to the cannon ,which according to real Victory pics was not the way it was done I have never soldered and had to think of a simple method of fixing a ring on the breech , if thats the right word , finally drilled a small hole ,cut a piece of wire and with a drop of ca and carefull fitting found a solution , i think ?? It,s not perfect but when the rope is added it hides a lot Brass eyes are made from wire but i bought the black rings , 3mm that the rope passes through Another night or two should finish the sixteen i need to finish this deck A couple of questions to anyone who might know On 1:72 scale would the blocks on the cannon rigging be 2 or 3 mm ?? The rope seen in pic i think is that provided for the cannons , i think it looks alright but wonder if perhaps it,s to big ???
