  1. I am thinking about buying this kit but am a mite confused as to which detailing set(s) I will need to buy to improve it. I have been onto the Pontos site but they do not give much detail as to what is contained in each upgrade kit. Could you please advise as to which upgrades to buy? Thanks.
  2. I have used Pliobond contact adhesive and have suffered no plate 'drop off'. Used Amati plates on a HMS Fly model. Hope this is of some help.
  3. Thanks guys. I am getting confused with the slings. It is quite clear now that I have been put right regarding the relationship between Tyes, Slings and Jeers. Once again Thanks. (and yes the kit is a strong candidate for firewood).
  4. Can someone out there please help me understand the use of the Tye when used on the Main Yard. From my present understand (probably totally wrong), the yard has the blocks attached that allows the hoisting of the yard to the running position. Now this is OK, as the yard is fully mobile in the hoist/lowering mode but adding a tye would surely prevent lowering once in place. As I said Help!! Thanks (I am building the Panart San Philipe)
  5. NMBrook. Thanks for the heads-up on the timber profiles. I will have a look at their site.
  6. Could someone out there please give me some assistance regarding the straightening of brass moulded strips? I have a Panart San Filipe (more fool me) that has long brass mouldings that have been bent into 'horseshoe' shapes to get them into the box. Why, I do not know as the box is big enough for these strips to be supplied as straight lengths. The strips are approximately 4mm wide x 2mm thick. I have tried annealing them (heat to red heat and quenching immediately in cold water) whilst dangling them with a heavy weight at one end. It helps a bit but they are still not good enough for use. Please bear in mind that I do not have access to a machine shop. Thanks in advance.

  8. I have found that Windsor and Newtons Artists Satin Varnish gives a non yellowing covering that is easily sanded between coats. I usually airbrush the final coat(s).
  9. If you wish to be pedantic - the calculator (8 digits) conversions are 25.399956 and 0.0393701
  10. I recently bought a Mantua Strip Clamp in the hope that it would assist me in preparing strip wood for planking (the wood supplied by Panart is a much use as firewood as anything else). When I checked to see how accurate it was, I found that the center area was a good 1.2 mm lower than the ends. That's OK if you want to make planks that are bowed in the middle. My solution to the problem was to remove the metal strips and sand the top face on a sheet of glass. Things are now quite accurate.
