  1. Hello All When I started the hobby of building model ships, I didn't have neither the knowledge nor the necessary tools to build the Models... and that led to some ugly ones 🤪😀.. However I didn't give up and kept reading and watching Videos.. I believe the Models I build after several trials became better then the old ones☺️☺️ ... One of the Ships I was (and am still) fond of is the Prins Willem 1650 .. a model which was built by many Modelers as it is a source of inspiration I guess .. I built it long years ago and here are the photos of that build 🙄 I know It is not so nice and it is not close to the Prins Willem either ,and the scale of the rigging components is not accurate. Please Notice the furled sails , they are not so professional .. not rolled as it should be 😏 So I decided to build it again after I gained some experience and intend to share the building log with you this time. It will always be very nice to receive your comments Thank you
  2. I once had a build log of my Prins Willem here on MSW. I also had a backup of it on my PC. Some months ago I deleted that one.... I wish I hadn't done so I will try to recreate some of it over the next weekends. Perhaps that will give me some inspiration to continue her rigging, as I haven't done much over that last months. Jan
  3. Hello all. I had debated back and forth as to whether or not I would do another build log and I guess you can tell what I decided. This will be my third kit built ship and decided on the Prins Willem by Corel. Prior to this I had attempted a scratch build of a sidewheeler steamboat but came to the realization that I’m not quite ready for that leap. A little background information on the ship for those interested. Owner: Dutch East India Company Built: 1649-1650 Maiden voyage: May 5, 1651 Sank near Madagascar 1662 due to violent weather Crew of 276 Displaced: 700 tons Length: ~137 ft Armament: 32 guns A replica was built in 1985, but was destroyed by fire in 2009. The kit was purchased through Model Expo and although it was back ordered it only could two weeks to receive. The model scale is 1:100, with a finished length of 29-1/2” and a height of 23". The kit is POB with laser cut wooden frames and the hull is double planked. There are quite a few parts to this kit and even though I know I should do an inventory of them I am forgoing that task and will check for the required pieces as I proceed. Fingers crossed. Obligatory exterior and interior box pictures. There are ten sheets of drawings which appear to be quite good, the instruction manual however is a little lacking.
  4. Hello All, I built this model 10 years ago. From my teens (now I'm 40) I have been a modeler, building plastic kits of all kinds, but always wanted to build a wooden ship. I gave a try to a solid hull, pretty simple Santa Maria (shaping the hull with a rasp from a square block..), then, when I could afford, a Billings Mayflower (which was not up to publishing standards). The Corel kit was a major step up, the first ship I taken seriously, and this became the period of my modeling, I enjoyed the most. I found the old DDM site, read a lot, purchased books and discovered something new with each part I made. This will never come back, and this model still reminds me to these exciting times. Things have changed a lot since. Having two kids now, in addition to heavily increased workload, I mostly exercise model building by watching other people's work. Recently I read a post about majority of MSW members are not participating. Feeling guilty in this regard here comes my log of the Prins Willem. I built the kit mostly out of the box, and despite it's shortcomings on the historical accuracy, had a lot of fun. I will try to continuously update the log as time allows. David
