  1. Endeavour's Longboat - Artesania Latina Hello all, Since introducing myself a few weeks ago I have been reading through a great many references on this site and elsewhere on t’interweb, trying to glean and understand as much knowledge as possible on the process of wooden ship kit building. Replies to my initial post offered a warm welcome, encouragement, and links to various ‘where and where not to start’ posts and I am grateful to all for those. Taking the lead from a link to a list of kits suitable for a first venture into sticking bits of wood together rather t
  2. OK, so here we go, this is my first ever wooden ship model, so be gentle with me!! I'm 58 this year and have been building plastic model kits since I was a wee one, mainly military vehicles, Tamiya 1:35 scale. After many years away from modelling (family, kids and all that), I started again about 10 years ago but this time with big stuff - 1:14 scale RC trucks mainly. I was keen to start another kit but found the new Tamiya 1:14 truck WAY too expensive at £900 - they don't even have opening doors for goodness sake! Looking around I stumbled on wooden ships and decided to tr
  3. Technically this is not a build log - since I've built her! But not having discovered this forum until about halfway through, I feel I've missed out, so I thought I'd post a few pics, point out what I got wrong, and just chat about how much fun I had. Chat back if you like! There is one complete build log on the forum for this boat - by @Rick01, and a few partial logs. If you want to see the full evolution of the build have a look at Rick's log.
  4. Hi folks, this is my first post so hopefully I won’t break too many rules straight off the bat! I decided to have a go at building a model boat (I figured a boat made more sense that starting on a ship) and I came across Artesania Latina’s longboat from the Endeavour and quite liked the look of it. It was a bit daunting opening the box to find a bunch of planks and sticks so I didn’t actually start it for a while but being locked down for a few months got me going eventually. I’ve been lurking around here for a while after finding some really useful info here and read quite a few of the bui
  5. Gday So I started the build a week ago, rainy cold winters weekend here in Canberra AUS. First ever wooden model, so it should be interesting. I chose the kit as it seems people recommended it as a beginners kit, so why not? I had a look through numerous build logs to get an idea on what was involved, and luckily there is miles of really good information and handy tips on how it all works. I decided from the get go that I would take advice from members who had built the kit, so thanks to Rick01, AndrewW for the info and inspiration. So off we go..... I
  6. Hello everyone, This will be my first wooden model build - I am super excited and equally nervous. I have chosen the Endeavour's Longboat for two reasons: Artesania Latina kits are more readily available in South Africa I thought it to be a good beginner kit while not being overly simplified in terms of detail, rigging etc. I have gone through the existing build logs here, which will prove to be invaluable. I can only hope that my completed work would look as awesome as other's models, and I may even "borrow" a few of the ideas featured in th
  7. This is my first wooden model wooden ship build but I have had some experience with plastic models and other smaller wooden scratch built models. After opening the box and examining the parts and pieces I am a little nervous but I am prepared to go through each step slowly and carefully and use the MSW resources to help me through the build. From what I have seen on other build logs of this kit the instructions aren't the best, and after looking through the instructions myself it really doesn't go into much detail. So far I have glued the ribs onto the keel. After dry
  8. I have a little experience working with wooden ship kits, but my sons always ask if they can help. I'd really like to build my HMS Victory with them so I decided to get this small kit to help them learn some of the principles behind wooden ship kit building. We got started by cutting the Keel and the first four frames out. The older son is the only one that can handle the Xacto knife so he cut those with my help. Both of them got bored with sanding quick but when I pulled out the rotary tool with the sanding drum to do the inside edges, they didn't mind so much. These are jus
