  1. Just recently I was fortunate of getting a free kit. This kit was already started with the framing and planking done. I am looking forward to continue this kit. The cannons and walkway are just dry-fitted so is the stem piece.
  2. Okay, call me crazy if you like as this will be number three of models that I will be working on. But as I haven't encountered any problems with this one, I will proceed with the build of the famous Bluenose. This while I wait for parts for the Syren and Solo. I guess this kit doesn't need any introduction or picture of contents. So I will leave that out, however I do have extra material that I will be using later while building her. This extra comes from Syren Model Company, with other word our dear Chuck Passaro. This kit was bought many years ago and the keel and bulkhead plywood is still straight. When I was putting the false keel pieces together it turned out so straight I was amazed. The plywood is very nice and very little sanding is needed to get the bulkheads into each slot. Creating the rabbet was not as hard as I thought. Just being careful at the bow where the rabbet is extreme. I pre-beveled the bulkheads so there will be less sanding once they are glued in place.
  3. Well, I didn't expected I would come to this point. But here is my build log of the Syren. I feel a presentation of the kit is not necessary. Reklein and I are both members of PSSM, so this could be considered as a club build. Our President has already started the build but has had the bit at a stand still for a long time. I had started the kit, but the keel for BF was to warped and twisted to be used, even after two weeks of straightening. I even tried with the inserted bulkheads and filler blocks to get it straight"er" but to no avail. I contacted Mr. Mosko at ModelExpo via email and got a quick respons the following morning. I have shaped the bulkheads, put the templates together and will do other work while waiting for the new BF to arrive. The build jig is made and ready to go to. The current BF and bulkheads are just put together without glue and I am using them to bend the planking. Thought they could come to good use for that purpose. Lastly, I would like to extend a big thank you to all other members who has build Syren, as your logs will provide a lot of extra information needed for the build and how to avoid pit holes along the way. Now picture time
  4. A long time of no posting and several requests has made me to start the next Harvey project build log. This build has been going on for some time. Many changes and alterations has been done to the original parts, this due to material not measuring to the material list dimensions. This picture is the latest one some ten minutes old, before uploading. From this point I will go back to the start and explain what I have done as there are several changes, this in my best way. Have patience with me, as this kit will be kit bashed. not knowing the final physical outcome. This picture also shows partial of the pre-bending of walnut strips. As I am intending a single layer planking. If I fail I can go to double layer. By putting the paper clips on each bulkhead I can there-after put soaked strips through the holes and get the right bending. Some of the pictures from this build has appeared in other topics.
  5. Group, I have all the material for the build of the longboat, even the nice boxwood from Jeff Hayes and HobbyMill. However, I have a question with this before I get head into it. The sheet holding bulkhead and keel is very heavy chard from the laser cutting. In the attached picture I have gone over the sheets with a 400 grit paper, don't want to do to much. But the chard remains. Has anyone else experienced this and how was your approach to get a clean surface? Thank you

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
