  1. A bit of a departure, but I was at an IPMS show in Sanford ME this spring, and decided to build a model to enter next year. Not anything too complex, like Cutty Sark of Constitution. This kit seemed perfect, and with just a little kit-bashing should produce a good model.
  2. Hello, today marks two years that I have been learning how to build models. I join MSW two years ago and I think I have not missed to many days scene then lol. I have been having the time of my life, meeting people, getting to know some as well. I was going to start my Pegasus, but wanted to finish my Columbus ships. As LA Nina will be my next build So I open the box last night and wanted to post, but dew to technical issues 🙃 lol I went to work. The keel and the bulk head came together nicely. So I move on up to the upper deck, and planked that as well So Iam about to start planking. But FIRST I will give Chucks video one more go lol. Glad to be part of this wonderful organization. Both the NRG and MSW have become important to me, my recent panic attack 🙃 🙂 because I couldn't log on kinda made that a little more clear. So to everyone who has put up a like or a laugh thankyou so much. It will be hard for me to control myself not to rush this because I will be doing the Pegasus right after the Nina. I do have a Viking Long Boat to do as well but I thought I save that for when I get boared with the Pegasus lol. Now on we go, video, planking lol Bob M.
  3. This is my second scratch build. The USS Pennsylvania being my first. I thought I had started a build log on this site of this ship, but, I could not find one (it). So here are SEVERAL photos of it's progress. There are subtle differences in some of the photos as I changed things to accommodate future building. Like where I removed a bow support because the bow sprit would pass right through it. I took out the deck supports in the bulkheads because I decided I wanted to put the decks in individually. It would be easier to work on the lower deck without all of the deck ribs in the way. I did not cutout a door in the quarter galleries as the windows would have curtains on them and hide it anyway. The original framing of the quarter galleries was removed and I redid them when the side hulls were planked. It was more accurate and easier to put the windows and stern gun ports in. In the unpainted stern gallery photos, planks cover some of the window openings. In the primed photos you can see where I started the quarter gallery floor and ceiling. The cannon are left over from my Pennsylvania build. This model will have all of the cannon run out. The Pennsylvania only had a few on each side. The armament on the ships was almost identical. Pennsylvania had 18 pounder long guns on the spar deck, the Columbus had 42 pound carronades. The lower deck guns on both ships were mostly 32 pound long guns with 8 6 inch shell guns in the mix. I do not know where the shell guns were mounted, but, I am not putting them on anyway. Instead the lower deck gus will all be 32 pounders.
  4. Good Morning All, Normally, I would link to my Picasa album, but instead I think I will share the highlights and provide a link as well. As I mention over on my blog, this model is the one that finally got me into maritime historical research, way back in 1988. This is a link to my blog entry about the model and build - Building Airfix's "Santa Maria" And this is the link to my Picasa album - Airfix 1/384 "Santa Maria" Cheers, Robert
  5. Hello everyone! I'm Felipe, from Brazil, and this is my first log here, and also my first wooden model! It is "La Pinta", one of the three ships assigned to Columbus expedition, made by a small brazilian manufacturer that suits our needs for good quality kits, as its really hard to find kits from famous brands here. I've bought it an year ago when I signed up for this forum, but college wouldn't give the spare time needed for this kit, so I've just been able to star working on it this month. The hull structure: Starting to work on the decks: And to close the day, an encouraging dry-fit! Well, its not much for know, but at least I've started working on this beauty!
