  1. I just got a used 1/4=1 MS Katy of Norfolk schooner off of ebay the other day and I need some advice on it. The kit is MISSING the following items: rings for the sails, the boom/gaff yokes, parrel beads, an anchor the belaying pins they say should be in the kit, the rudder, rudder hinge, rudder bar, keel stem and stern post instructions that make a modicum of sense. (what's in included is rubbish), blocks and deadeyes that are not 1/8" in size, mastcaps. What IS in the kit: hull (partly carved), rigging, a packed of itty bitty deadeyes, a packet of really tiny nails, a packet of blocks that a spider couldn't fit a web through the hole, wood for the masts, bowsprit, blocks to carve for the hatch/cabin, two pieces of wood I am guessing I am suppose to make the sternpost, rudder bar and keel stem from, really useless instructions, a packet of itsy bitsy teeny weenie eye pins. I will use the instructions to make sail templates and then make them from silkspan So what i need is advice on where to buy the blocks (in bulk), deadeyes (in bulk), anchor, bit heads or belaying pins (in bulk), mast caps (I will probably make these). The other thing is SIZE of the items needed. Most everything is in MM out there and I don't know what MM is close to scale for 1/4 inch = 1 foot. thanks, Keith BUILDS : AL Scottish Maid (complete) AL Virginia Schooner (under construction)
  2. Surely I'm missing something in my Amati Vanguard kit. There should be 6 curved pieces that are part of the cap rails 2 curving from the poop deck 2 near midships, and 2 from the forecastle. I see them installed on other Amati Vanguard build logs but I cannot find them in my kit or on the plans showing the parts. Can someone point me where to find them in this kit? I must be looking right past them, its quite frustrating knowing they must be there somewhere
  3. Greetings, I have come across a very interesting product that I am going to use for a project at the Modeller's Workshop. This product, Renshape, a high-density foam, is excellent for scratch-building parts and making molds. However, it comes in large sections and is quite expensive. I am considering buying some of this stuff and cutting it into small pieces so model-builders can use it. Please let me know if you are interested. If there is enough interest, I will start selling the stuff on my website, in small pieces. Best Regards, Rick Shousha Modeller's Workshop Montreal
  4. Bought the subject model on eBay recently. Took a chance that the open box had content intact, except for instructions and thread for rigging, as advertised. Sold in "as is" condition. I lost - lesson learned. Most of it is there, but parts of masts are missing (so far). Wondering if someone out there may have the same model kicking around that was damaged beyond repair (I've seen stories about that on modeling blogs - cats wandering on shelves, a sudden gust of wind thorough an open window, etc.) that they are still hanging onto and might want to part with. Or maybe someonr can alert me to a source that they may have seen. From what I have read, it is a lost cause contacting Revell.

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
