  1. Just starting up the USN Picket Boat build... I just completed the J Class (1:80 scale) racing yacht and anxious to get started on the Picket. I am by no means an expert builder and from what I can tell the instructions for the Picket are sketchy at best, but with the excellent logs I have been reading on other Picket builds, I think I should be OK. Famous last words,,, We will see how it goes.
  2. I am undertaking building the Model Shipways Picket Boat as my second foray into model ship building. I previously built their New Bedford Whaleboat with a modicum of success so thought I would give this a go.https://modelshipworld.com/topic/20442-a-novice-at-age-70/ As seems to be the tradition on this forum please feel free to pull up a chair and laugh along with my neophyte mistakes. One word of warning, make it a comfortable chair, a recliner would probably be best as suspect I will be plodding along at a snail's pace! Another warning, my photography and graphic skills are on a
  3. Starting my next build, USN Picket Boat #1. I've discovered that this ship modeling is an addiction! Couldn't even wait a week after finishing "Syren" to begin this one! Well, after inventorying the kit, I put the keel together. Here we go again...
  4. Hi, this is my 3rd model. I will not be starting this till the end of the week, I have to clean up the bench from my last build the Chaperon. Hoping you can find something of interest if you do follow along, looking forward to being in touch soon. I plan to bash this kit about to try to make better use of packaging, with a crew not much shy of 20 men, square footage must have been prime real estate. My plans don't follow historic records to closely but the changes I make I hope have merit and at worst should generate some friendly banter, I hope so. All th
  5. I'm starting my third build log here on MSW, this time Model Shipways rendition of Picket Boat #1. I first must apologize as once I cracked the box, I couldn't contain my enthusiasm and started building right away...so I've no inventory pics. What drew me to this kit was the exposed boiler and steam engine, the kit provides some excellent photo etched detail parts and some white metal castings that I'll photo and index as I add them to the build. The laser cut wood pieces appear to be of the highest quality and those I've worked with have proved to be such. So without further adieu
  6. This will be a build log for my Model Shipways USN Picket Boat #1, a 1:24 scale representation of the steam launch built in 1864 that was responsible for the sinking of the Albemarle in Plymouth, North Carolina. This first post will be used as an Index for the build log which I will do my best to keep updated as I add content. Index: Section 1 - Hull start and framing. 1. The beginning, keel preparation. 2. Forward bulkheads beveled and placed. 3. Deck planking begins. 4. Bulkhead planking, bow deck planking. 5. Stern deck margin pla
  7. Like everyone else, I am devastated by the loss of all of the prior log material on the site. Although it won't be possible for me to reproduce the logs of my previous builds, I will, at some point, try to post pictures from those builds. For now, I will update my current build. I wll try soon to repost the pictures that I previously posted on this log. My most recent completed work was to make and add the propeller, rudder and tiller. The propeller is the kit casting, mounted to a shaft and painted brass. The rudder was shaped and tapered and mounted to a two part shaft made of tube and p
