  2. After a long time I returned to the construction of a wooden sailboat model. As the first kit I chose a kit I found on the Internet, it´s the "President frigate" made by Sergal. After studying the package, I found out that the model is not quite true to type, or scale. The scale described as 1:60 in my opinion disagrees. I calculated the model to be 1:90 scale, which is more accurate. This is more of a model than an exact replica, but I decided to modify it. I´m building the deck equipment and rigging according to the monograph of the ship Royal Caroline, it is the same size and the er
  3. Back at it again. Cracked open the box on one of my shelf kits, the sergal president. I want to build this kit pretty much as designed documenting it as well as I can. The internet is rather empty of logs for this kit. Considering this kit is often found cheaply online, this log could be of good use to people. As a ship, it has some issues. It's a fictitious ship, described as a frigate but more appropriately a sloop of war I think. Armed only with 12 carronades, many of which lie behind the main chains. I think they took a kit designed as a merchant hull, slapped some carr
  4. Hi all I hope you don't mind i start a build log of a model in which I've already progressed a lot. This was/is my second build in ship modelling. I started this build about 10 years ago, but due to different reasons my model shipbuilding got a long break. She started to collect a lot of dust until about a year ago, i restarted my shipbuilding with my other model, the corsair. But now I've put that one on hold, because i really think i should finish this model first. In the beginning, while planking the hull i had a little accident and broke off the bulwarks on the middle de
  5. Hi, new guy here. First time building a Mantua/Sergal 1:60 scale wooden kit of HMS Prseident, a light Frigate, or Sloop of War. I have lots of questions to ask regarding scales, details, colours, rigging, and fittings. The kit doesn't seem to be 100% accurate with scale, and the fittings are very lackluster. Any ideas on what I can do? The building instructions have very little detailed information and give you a basic overview of the build process. I have practically flown blind with this first build attempt. I will post a build log later on when I have finished the second layer o
  6. Hi. Well its been plastic ships that I have built and when I saw this wood ship on E bay I had to have a go. Got it cheap, well cheaper than the real price. The frame was made up, so I took it apart and re did the frame. The box art which many here must know. Next it was the frames, with a bit of work I made them up. Needed something to strengthen in between the frames, so went for balsa. I decided to make this into a sloop with 10 carranades and two smaller pop guns on the poop deck. The barrels that came with the kit I will use but need new carriers as the wood one's that come with
  7. This is the restart of this build log - I've been going for a while but the birth of my second child coupled with the normal challenges of life have resulted in something of a stalled start. Here goes!!
  8. Finally I have plucked up the courage to post my build of Sergal's HMS President. The kit was bought several years ago after thinking that plastic was cheating I only got as far as assembling the keel, bulkheads, false deck and one strip of the first planking before it ended in the cupboard and I turned to the dark side of model aircraft Last year, July I think, I came across the kit in the cupboard and decided to have another crack. Well a year later I am close to finishing. So here are a few pics The plans from the kit seemed nowhere close to how I imagi
  9. I've been meaning to start a build log for a while, but had a bit of an MSW1 meltdown with the camera. I started this build Nov 2012, as my second build (Thermopylae being the first). Both of these were intended to be training exercises to get me on to doing the Victory, but there are so many really good examples on here, I decided to do something different. So the Warrior is sat in the corner. So here she is, as was
