  1. Hi, William Mowll in his book about SS Great Britain refers to his books where he gathered his knowledge about steam propelled ships from. There is a photo of some, but not all were mentioned explicitly in the bibliography section. Especially this book on the upper half of the attached image: Does anybody know this book? I would like to know more about the complete title, author, publisher and may be the isbn.... Best regards Thomas
  2. I would appreciate your recommendations for what varnish to use. I've finished gluing the planks to my deck and now the instructions have me painting varnish to seal it. They recommend "nitrocellulose pore-filling varnish with a satin finish." Is this my best bet and if so do you have product recommendations? Some say oil based, some water based... Thank you for your help.
  3. I have a question about glue. I am building the OcCre Polaris ship, which I chose because I am a complete beginner and it includes a video tutorial. The instructions and video say to use wood glue and for some parts, "Cobblers" or "Contact" glue. All I could find was "Contact Cement" and I don't know if its the same thing. A couple posters here commented that they never use contact glue, (or instant dry glue which the instructions also call for). So now I am not sure what is the right thing to do. This particular step in the build is for "lining the deck," which involves gluing planks to the deck. I think it has something to do with needing a slow drying glue because it has my paint the whole deck with glue and then wait a bit before applying the planks. My question is, should I follow the instructions and use contact glue or should I just use wood glue all the time? And is my contact cement the same thing? You can see what I am talking about in my screenshot of the video below, which shows them brushing the contact glue. Thank you for your help. Dan
  4. Surely I'm missing something in my Amati Vanguard kit. There should be 6 curved pieces that are part of the cap rails 2 curving from the poop deck 2 near midships, and 2 from the forecastle. I see them installed on other Amati Vanguard build logs but I cannot find them in my kit or on the plans showing the parts. Can someone point me where to find them in this kit? I must be looking right past them, its quite frustrating knowing they must be there somewhere
  5. So I have been pitched a question and I can't think of anyplace to ask other than here in hopes that someone may have some good information. The other day I was doing some research at work (it was a rare slow day) and a co-worker saw the age of sail ships on my screen and asked me a question that took me by surprise. He asked me about the state of the sails when a warship went into action. Now I've read a lot of fiction but I could not answer that question. So in hopes perhaps someone here will know: When an 18th century warship went into battle were there any special orders made in regards to the sails and rigging? I am sure that wind and position relative to the enemy would have an effect on orders but was there anything that would have been ordered each time? I'm sure I could find some books on it but as I was asked the question I was hoping to get a faster response here. Thanks! PS: I apologize if this is the wrong place or an improper post, I'm still pretty new here.

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
