  1. Hi After years of reading the books decided to take the plunge and build the ship that features so heavily. I chose the Mamoli kit in the knowledge that it does not bear much resemblance to the real Surprise or those that appeared in the movie or books. My choice was driven partially due to the size and my little boy has insisted that I add a crew. I will make some modifications to this model so it is closer to how I imagined the Surprise to look which has been coloured by the movie and some of the other kits out there. I am very slow in building but am using this log a
  2. Enough of the thinking, time for some doing! My son came good at Christmas with a copy of the Brian Lavery/Geoff Hunt book "The Frigate Surprise", number 165 of the limited edition of 250 which includes the signed Geoff Hunt print, marvellous. I have purchased a Scheppach Deco Flex scroll saw to cut out all those curvey bits. The book includes lots of line drawings including the all important hull profiles which I will scan and enlarge to the right scale then transfer to ply for the internal framing. I intend a double plank on bulkhead method for the hull. I
  3. Shame all was lost ... I guess I will repopulate with truncated series of photos from beginning to today. Now at 450 hrs and finishing gun deck cannons. Material to follow after I get home from work.
  4. Howdy, This is my first build and thought I would share the experience on here as I am sure there will be lots to share with others new builders and lots learn from you folks. I know the forums suggest going easy with the first build, but I inevitably regret not getting what my heart is set on with these types of projects, and will all of the online support and my own commitment to doing a good job and researching plenty, I just jumped right in with the HMS Surprise kit. These were the main reasons(for those new builders grappling with the same situation) -I wanted some
  5. Hi, The source of this project is the “Plan of HMS Surprise, 1796 Lines and Profile, from the Royal Museums Greenwich (Publisher code J5948). The drawing was imported into a cad program, traced, and a scaled working set of drawings printed. Construction is now underway. Walter
  6. First sailing vessel and first Build log. I started my ship on December 27. and have been taking pictures that I've yet to post. I have built boats before (real and model) but have never done rigging . I'm starting with a moderate level kit before I try my first scratch built. Iv'e been getting advice from your forums since I decided to go for it. I'm looking forward to more feedback and sharing lessons learned with this community of like interested friends.
  7. Hi folks, I've decided to start a build log so I can share with folks that ask about my latest ship model. This will be HMS Surprise 100% scratch (if I can) built. It will be stained with no or very little painting. I've already made a couple of errors so I just assume that Dr. Materin has been doing some refitting after buying her out of the service. The build is single plank on bulkhead. We'll see how that goes. This is my third build after Armed Virginia Sloop and Niagara so I expect some challenges. Just bought a Byrnes table saw and thicknesser and plan to purchase a lathe
  8. Hello one and all, Here I go then. My attempt to build HMS Surprise. I had hoped to base this very firmly on Jack Aubrey’s vessel but I have found it difficult to tie down exactly what Patrick O’Brian had in mind. It is quite clear that O’brian contradicts himself at times and that he plays fast and loose with the time line. Others may have a better handle on this than me and I would love to hear their thoughts; in the mean time the plan is to build L’Unite/Surprise before her refit in 1798 thus giving scope to include “long guns” much loved by our Jack. The kit from Artesania Latin
  9. My name is Derik and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I fell in love with model ships when I first read Tintin and the Unicorn in primary school. I even visited the flea market in Brussels to look for the Unicorn. Unfortunately there was no fourth model for sale. I started the HMS Surprise in April 2012. Good progress was made until July. I will upload the typical start Picture as a test. If it works I will post more of the progress.
