Bounty's look'in sweet..........rigging is very well done.   I do believe that some of the sheet rigging is left up........simply tied off somewhere to aide when the sails are hoisted back up.   glad to hear Jerry's on the mend

Hi Popeye..

Good to hear from you again.  Jerry seems to agree with you and will probably run some of the sail-sheet rigging and leave them tied up some way.  He's still not up to building as his eyes are still giving him problems.  He's really going through a lot of discomfort which hopefully one of his doctors will help fix one of these days.  He sees another specialist this Friday.  

My friend was over today to take some pictures of Bounty but they didn't come out too good so I'm just posting a couple of ones I took..

Hello Lawrence...

Thank you for your good wishes.  I'll be seeing a different specialist in the morning regarding my eyes and hope he'll have a solution for me.  It's been more than 6 weeks now and I'm still hurting.

The four main cannons on my plans measure 35mm but the actual cannons sent in the kit are 40mm.  There are also 10 calverin cannons that mount in various places around the deck on posts.  These cannons or calverins as they are referred to are 32mm in length.  The plans and the parts sent are different but that's par for the course with this Amati kit.  I have said it before and I'll say it again, The Amati kit is by far the worst kit I have ever built.  There have been missing parts and parts that different in size from the plans and the quality sucks.  Never again will I buy a kit by this manufacturer.  I feel bad for Charlene as she has taken the brunt of it since it's her first build and she has run into this situation.

Hi Lawrence,

I asked Jerry about a flag locker on the HMS Bounty's deck and he said that he doesn't recall seeing any in McKay's book or in the plans and directions.  He said to tell you that you must be thinking that you're still building the Victory.  Where did you see such a locker?  In any event, I guess all of these ships must have someplace where they carried their signal flags and pennants.

The bad news is that Jerry will require surgery on his eyes and the first procedure is now scheduled for June 2nd.  In the meantime he has been helping me finish hanging the hanks (coils) and we're almost completed.  Then of course we'll tackle the flags.  Here are some more pictures of the hanks.

Hi Brian,

Thank you so much for your thoughts regarding Jerry's situation.  When he had cataract surgery he was so pleased at the outcome; those were very good days.  He couldn't get over how bright everything was and how vivid the colors around him were.  Now we hope the medical procedures will help to preserve the sight he has left in his right eye.  I can't imagine how it would be if he wasn't complaining about some problem when working on a ship model.  His condition is definitely known and the procedure has proven successful more than not so we're keeping our fingers crossed.

Lawrence, you are absolutely correct.  Here is a picture of the flag locker on our Bounty which Jerry thought was a rudder house.  Thanks for pointing out that it is a flag locker as now we can see the compartments which we hadn't noticed before.  And many thanks for your good wished regarding Jerry's eye problem.  We are anxiously looking forward to the surgery day so we can make some good progress with this problem.  Our best regards to Bernadette.

Hi Everyone..

Today is the day that Jerry said he was going to measure the model for a display case.  I guess that means something...We are actually finished with our HMS Bounty except for some detail touching up, straightening out some rat lines, and deciding what to do with the sail sheet blocks that hang empty on most of the yards.  I feel very good for what we have accomplished considering the physical problems we have had.  Jerry's already talking about another build for him and that's a good sign that he feels optimistic about his upcoming surgery.  I think I'm going to build the Nina as I fell in love with the little ship when we went aboard her replica in Naples a few weeks ago.  I think Jerry is going to find something riggingless..(Yeah, I know that's not a word)  .Here are some new photos as Bounty is right now and perhaps we'll have some more a little later on.   It's been hectic and quite an experience for me but I definitely have the bug and wish to continue with this wonderful hobby.  So, until a little later on...

Hello Lawrence..

I have hijacked Charlene's site to thank you so much for your most complimentary post regarding our build, the HMS Bounty.  As you mentioned, the display case (acrylic)  has been ordered and in about three weeks we will launch our model into its case and hope the dust mites will stay away forever.  I have also ordered the Bluenose kit from Model Shipways, (Model Expo) and if all goes well my next endeavor will be it.  I am scheduled for eye surgery next Thursday so I imagine it will be several weeks before any construction can begin.  I'm actually feeling more upbeat these days as the doctor told me that I would not have to have surgery on my right eye for quite some time, perhaps enough time to finish the Bluenose.  The admiral is pondering as to what she will do next but I think she's going to settle in on "La Nina."  But...who knows?

congratz!!!   I'm glad to see that you two finished,  in spite of all the problems you've encountered.   this is a special piece..........you built it together....there's something really cool about that!   Charlene....perhaps you can put a bug in my admiral's ear.......       {just kidding}.

 

sorry to hear about Jerry's surgery.........my fingers are crossed as well that they remedy the problem and he has a speedy recovery.   the bounty is a beauty and she darn well deserves a case!  the Nina is a great kit........and so it the Bluenose.......I have what there is of a Billing's kit in my closet.  out of the box,  they make a very attractive kit........but I'm sure you'll do some research and mod out some of the inconsistencies {there are not many kits that are replica worthy}.

 

I did have to smile when I read that Jerry thought that this was the worst kit he had ever seen........really gives a good testament to your abilities,  since you mastered it so well.   I'll look forward to your next one

oh crap..........I have to laugh..........that was Jerry that posted last,  and not you          Jerry id going to build the Bluenose........and you will be doing the Nina.    I also have a Revell kit of the Santa Maria 1:87 scale in the closet..........the kit dates back to the late 60's.   it's why I bought it........I love old kits!

Hey Popeye..

All is well...The surgery was a success and I'm back in business again.  I still will be administering medication for a few months but I I did get the okay to start building again.  Sorry about usurping the admiral's site but let's face it, I'm too lazy to open my own.  Today's doctor visit proved happy as I was given the green light to do light work.  I will have to have a couple of more surgeries in the future but now that I have experienced one I'm pleased to say that it is a very tolerable procedure.  No pain, no strain...just a lot of eye drops several times a day.

 

I have the Bluenose on my desk and hope to start building the keel today.  I also bought a new floor lamp with 2 different magnifications and it really should be helpful. It has five legs on wheels and really stretches far in every direction.  I absolutely believe it'll be very helpful for me.   I'm not keen on starting a build log for this one so I may just take some photos for my own use. The wood is not the best to look at but none of it will ever be seen.  Charlene ordered her kit (La Nina by Artesenia Latina) last night so I guess she's really serious.  And she better be because now that she spent a good deal of time on the Bounty she should have enough experience to handle her new build.  However, I'll always be around for questions and problems.  The Nina replica was in Naples a few weeks ago, along with La Pinta and we were able to board them both.  Small vessels and very interestingly rigged.  Short masts and only two of them. As far as "worst" kits...I'm beginning to think that most of them are very cheaply produced.  Thanks forputting up with my rambling and have a wonderful day my friend

so glad to hear you did well with the surgery Jerry........it must have been hard to persevere with the bounty,  but she turned out to be a beautiful ship.   you two should be very proud of what you accomplished     what brand of Bluenose did you settle on?   I have the Billing's kit,  given to me from a friend.....he couldn't continue to built it....sadly.   if you could,  if you should find any interesting tidbits in your travels,  could you PM them to me as well?   I would really appreciate it

Hello again Popeye...

You are too nice and I just want you to know that I appreciate all of your kind and comforting remarks.  I'm happy to have met you and that is what's so good about MSW.

 

Whenever I did any work on the Bounty and whenever I do anything with the Bluenose, which is by Model Shipways . (Model expo ) it' was and will always be a bit difficult.  Since I have no eyesight left in my left eye i have no decent depth perception which makes it challenging but not impossible to work on these models.  I even laugh at myself as I feel my way down to the tip of a toothpick in order to put some glue on it using it as a glue stick.  I often miss the tip if I head straight for it so I start at one end and feel my way down to the end. There have been many glue spots on Bounty which shouldn't be there but luckily, Charlene has been able to clean most of them up.  Look, it's clumsy but not impossible and it's not the end of the world.  I'm not going to give up and that's why I decided to build another model.  I started the keel this morning and I now plan to cut in a bearding line so that the planking will blend in. This hull is single planked which I'm not sure I like.  I've been lucky with my past builds because the second planking has always covered up all the errors I carelessly made in the first planking. For example,  I'd hate to peel off the second planking of the HMS Victory because the first planking is really terrible.  Luckily, no one gets to see it..

I'll certainly keep you posted as to any "incidents" I run into with this build.

Not much more to say except that I have begun to build the Bluenose.  Charlene is undecided about having a build log for her Nina.  I'll ry and talk her into it but I think it'll be a tough battle.  I believe she has gone shy on me.  We haven't received the display case for Bounty yet but when we do we'll hapily post a picture of it in its new environment.

Hello again everyone..

It took a long time but we finally received the display case from our manufacturer and our Bounty is happily on display in our living room.  She proudly sits on the other side of the narrows from HMS Victory vying for the most attention.  This will close out our joint effort in the building oh the HMS Bounty.
