Hi Jparsley,

 

those are figurines made by Preiser. If you Google "Preiser around 1900" you`ll find a large variety most in scale 1:87 (H0 gauge) 

 

The N gauge scale like I am using, 1:160 in turn of the century fashions around 1900 is unfortunately not being produced any more, so with a bit of luck you may be able to find something via Ebay now and then, or from second hand model train dealers...

Little update....

 

Am just starting with fitting the aft part of the (raw and dryfit) boats deck into the metal framework. The lower portion of the aft mast also is fitted in place. The deck is of 0,8 mm thick 3-layer ply, and will be planked with 0,8 x 2mm pine planks with "pencil edge caulking", same as the promenade deck

Nice find for the figures, Nils. However, the ladies' wide crinoline dresses are from the 1860's! You may need to re-model them to suit 1900 fashions as the other women's narrower skirts.

you`re absolutely right with 1860`s crinoline dresses, I had the same thoughts......, I`ll try and tune those a bit slimmer perhaps with Dremel or so...

I`m waiting for  an photo-etched set of brass benches in scale 1:144 from an Australian source, (for soldering together), that go along side of the promenade deck housings, before the upper boatsdeck is permanently fastened, due to access possibility. Have no idea how long the postway / customs shall take....

Build log part 40

 

(update, making the vents)

 

starting with the various number of bowl vents to begin with.....

Here bowels for the 3 smallest sizes with holes in them to solder the appropriate vent-tubes in. The bowls are  made from steel sheet bag-feet buttons, after removing the bag- fastening clip devices....

Interesting Nils but I have no idea what you are talking about with "bag feet buttons" with "fastening clip devices."  Remember, I'm an airplane kinda guy and them things don't have vents like your ship

Fortunately my VOC  ship Surabaya doesn't have vents either, they just opened the gun ports  

Can you show us a picture of the complete clip assembly so this ignoramus can understand it?

The pic now should be self explaining. The sample bag foot button in the middle still has the fastening device..

I chose the vent tubes acc. to the max possible tube diam. that can fit neatly and  radial into the bowls for soldering

I found these so called "bag feet" on a web site of an Italian source. The benefit was the elegant rounded rear side of the bowl, also giving a little more depth, so larger vent tubes could be used, than with ordinary flat reared bowels. 

I was initialy looking for "acorn nuts" in appropriate thread sizes, the ones with brazed on domes made from sheet, but was`nt able to find any at all (used to cut off the domes), that what I did for my "Heinrich Kayser" steamer

Thanks Nils, now I know how they look but still don't know what a "bag foot" is .  If I was looking for an American source how would I ask, is there another name I can use?  Not that I need it but am just very curious.  Acorn nuts I can understand but can be labor intensive.

Update

making vents

 

have been producing vents in different sizes these days, the pics show only 39 and there are 39 more to do (total 78)

The time consuming part is to get the radial hole to size of a close fit around the tube for good soldering with a gas torch

I`ve never used my Dremel (and different diameter grinding bits) so much before

Hey Nils, Nice work. My wife , a business secretary calls those "bagfeet" , brads. In her business they are used to fasten the pages of a multi paged document together. Thats a pretty clever use you have made of them for your bowls.  Bowels are our intestines. Sorry to be so picky, I speak about 6 words of German so I can only wish my language skills were as good as yours.   Bill in Idaho
