yes, I think they will be good looking on the promenade deck and other areas under the Atlantic sunshine, most occupied with sitting passengers watching the rolling sea and the ships wakes

Nils, nice job with the ventilators. They look wonderful! My jaw dropped when I saw the deck furniture and thought you soldered them. After reading the text, yes CA is definitely the way to go. Still, my fingers are a little to clumsy for such delicate parts. I'd be a nervous wreck after making just one. Nice work!

Hi Nils

 

Wonderful benches and chairs. That you are reluctant to smear paint over those little gems, I understand very well. However those brass parts could stand out a bit of the rest which is all in original colour. Don't you think that you could just brush them lightly with a nearly dry paintbrush with some matte wood colour (after thoroughly cleaning them, of course)?

thank you very much for your suggestion..., I`ll leave that final decision till later on. These tiny parts are so fragile, that the slightest "clean-brushing" may seperate the CA joints, because the glue film in the joints is so thin.

I understand your comment well, but on the other hand the

brass handrails and the brass window frames fit into the given scheme as well as with the painted surfaces....

Update...

 

here 2 of the 6 swan-neck hydrants that go to the promenade-deck, just inside of the railing...

Made from anealed 2 mm brass wire, bent and solder-fitted with sleeve and flange..., they will be painted red

regarding to the fire Water-Hydrants, I did 6 (three stations on each side of the promenade deck)

 

 

 

I also need some bollards and cleats alongside of the promeade deck railing, started making some today, using rivets, brass strip, and wood dowels, I intend to do 14 or 15

Hi Nils -

 

Checking in after the summer and love what I am seeing.  I second the compliments from everyone else and look forward to following your progress.

 

As for the deck chairs, here is a photo of the same photoetched ones that I used on the SS America.  I did decide to paint them with a simple brown spray, holding them down by sticking them to masking tape laid face up on some wood scrap.  They came off easily after painting without destroying the CA joints.

That a very nice shot with the deckchairs on your SS America, and many thanks for your tip with the face up tape and spray coloring.

BTW, how did you do the handrail portions (brown color) on the railings, did you mask then off ? is there a build log for your SS America ?

Hi Nils -

 

No, there is no build log for the SS America.  I did it before I joined MSW.  I have lots of construction photos, so I may post them one day.  I thought that I had some in the NRG home page Gallery, but I can't seem to find them any more.

 

The railings are photoetch from Gold Medal Models.  I spray the entire sheet with white primer and paint.  Then the railing lengths are individually cut off and the handrail is brush painted with acrylics.  I may have mentioned this in the build log for the Andrea Doria.

for answering, what a pitty no build log, thats such a nice liner. Is it in scale 1:144 like the deckchairs ?, if I remember right the Andrea doria is 1:192.

The America is at 1:192, like the Andrea Doria, the Rex, and the Uruguay.  Why change a winning style.  The chairs are the same scale.  I don't remember where I got them, but I still have one and it measures out to 3/8", which is right if the chair is 6 feet long.  Was it Tom's Modelworks ?  If anyone knows let me know, because I might need some more for a future project.

In the moment I`m planing on dry-fitting the aft half of the boats deck. Then it has to be planked in the foreseen places. This ca`nt be glued on, before all fitting out on the lower promenade deck is completed. (no access later on)

Also there are several stairways, several vent-tubes, deck furniture, passengers, fastening of aft shrouds and backstays etc. to be fixed in place, primering and painting.... I`m thinking it through over and over, regarding to "what must go first", and always something comes to mind, that was forgotten to consider  before...

that's to be expected......these ships have quite a few sub assemblies.  no two of that,  and three of those with these babies!  thank the good lord,  you have the other part of the build to think about,  to keep you from getting a mind cramp during the mass production     that's scratch building to a tee......your the designer.   I've painted myself in a corner a few times.......don't like the feeling either     your careful planning is paying off greatly....it quite a ship!

 

every once in a while......one gets a peek into the interior of  the model.  to cross section the model,  one would see the construction,  and what it's taken to arrive at the model we see.   there's a lot of wood there     the metal detail is fantastic!
