San Felipe by Sherry – Scale 1:96

Recommended Posts

Sherry the ship is looking very fine I would agree with Russ if I were going to cut holes for cannons then I would do it before the second planking it will allow you the added ability to ensure that the finished holes are clean and accurate and square, I say this not because I think that you are not capable of making them clean and square in the first place, it is just an insurance policy. And I like to have a fall back position. wood sometimes does not behave itself.

Looking really great, Sherry.   I'm with the others on cutting the ports now.  Gives you some wiggle room if you need to backtrack, replank, or re-cut them.  Also, have a cannon or a paper cutout handy to re-check them.

Hello Sherry, :dancetl6:

Some very good progress indeed.

I fully agree with Mark - The use of a cannon, will help a lot; especially when finishing the aperture to the correct size and height.

For example, I always keep a figure handy, so that when dimensions on both the scale plans and books don't make sense, I double check.

Cheers

Hi Sherry,

Yep, I agree with the others - cut the gunports now. That's the approach I took with my Vic hull (on the 2nd go - long story there). I also made a small sizing jig to help ensure they were all the right size.

Looking great so far, by the way.

Sherry, only thing I can add is this....MEASURE at least 10 times BEFORE you make that first cut :P

Cut them now. On my San felipe I had to cut the 3 times before I had them right. Boy, am I glad I cut them before the 2nd planking.

Wow! I'm always amazed, thankful and humbled by all the support on this forum! A pleasure to be a member here!!!!

Russ: Thank-you! It "makes sense in my head" as well. :D

Frank: Thank-you, and thanks for ck'n in! :)

Steve: Thank-you!

Glad to see you posting again...I thought your garden had swallowed you up!

:D  :D  It was only one of many things that swallowed up my time. I will be cutting the gun ports soon! I've viewed other San Felipe builds where the ports were cut after the second planking....way to scary for me.

Michael: Thank-you! You're right about keeping the holes square! I have nightmare visions of holes shaped like a rhombus or trapezoid!!! :o

Mark: Thank-you! Good idea about having a cannon for checking. ;)

Paul: Thank-you! I know what you mean about the figure...I have one as well and it really does help! :)

Grant: Thank-you!

long story there

...sounds like something I should try to avoid. :P  A sizing jig is a great idea for uniformity.

Robbyn: :D  :D  :D Thanks for the advice. It will actually save me time only having to measure 10 times now :P   if I had attempted cutting the ports after the second planking, I would probably have needed to measure 100 times and then cut with fear and trepidation!

Anja: Thank-you! It definitely seems to be the consensus to cut them now! :)

Bob: So........I'm not alone! :P  :D

robboxxx: Thanks as well for the advice. I'm sure I will be happy to have cut them at this stage. I would love to see a build log of your San Felipe or gallery pictures if she's already finished.

It would seem that I am easily distracted on this build.  :P  I ended up doing a little side project that was not originally on my agenda.

I wondered earlier where the great cabin would be on a ship like this. Thanks to all the responses I was able to confirm the location.....in my mind the next logical step was to "dress it up" a little. I started with a walnut table/desk and just got carried away from there. The goblet and jug are wood as well. The Captain/Admiral's bed was a perfect fit.

I'm currently figuring out the best way to have some of this room visible and I have a couple of ideas.

Thanks Augie! I cheated with the rugs - found some photos of 17th century rugs and printed them out in high resolution - voila!

Na na na na! Don't let Sherry fool you! She is trying to pull the wool over our eyes!

Actually she has little teeny tiny carpenters, ships builders, weavers and glass blowers in her shop doing this for her! Nobody can do this kinda stuff without help....and I bet somewhere in her magical garden is where these teeny tiny folk live....

uh huh! You are busted lady friend!

Augie: :D You either have a priceless 350 year old rug or a slightly newer version . If your base comander could weave one of these  , her services would really be in demand...I would be first to place an order!!   :)

Michael: Thank-you! This turned out to be a fun diversion.

Steve:  :D  :D  :D  I've heard of a shrinking workforce....but that puts a whole new twist on it! The only thing that seems to "magically" grow in my garden is weeds.  :P
