Hey Sherry

Welcome back! Great start to the planking! I like the use of the binder clips! Very cool! Curious...why balsa wood vs basswood for first planking? Are you not afraid of removing too much material when sanding?

Popeye: Thanks! I think the captain may be more patient than I am about the continuation of this build. :P

Steve: Thanks! I saw the binder clip idea on Mark Taylor's build log...they work well.
The plans call for balsa wood, so I did the same. Not that I have to follow the plans verbatim, but I already had balsa so....
I am cutting my own strips from stock that is a little thicker than the plans suggest, so I should have more leeway in terms of sanding.

Paul: Thanks! Great to be back at work! Hope to get more done this week...and, of course, pictures to follow. :)

Anja: Thank-you! The first planking is almost finished, but I won't have a chance to work on it over the weekend.

The garden will be planted tomorrow, and that's an all day, maybe two day job! Our garden is about 20 x 70 feet now...it used to be twice that size.  fleurs.gif

Hello Sherry,

That's still a big garden. No wonder it will maybe take two days.

But when you're finished, you will have beautiful garden to enjoy.

Okay....garden is in...back to the shipyard! :)

Anja: We definitely will enjoy our garden now that it is planted. We managed to plant it in one day - potatoes (65 plants), squash (3 varieties), Swiss chard, beets, carrots, lettuce (3 varieties), tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, peas, onions, radish, dill and sunflowers!

Steve: I'm not quite finished the first planking, but it's getting close. I still need to sand and trim, but here's how she looks at the moment.....

Thanks Augie and Grant. The next problem I face is patiently waiting for wood to arrive. I only need 4 strips of first planking and I've run out. My walnut, for the second planking, is on it's way as well.

Hey Sherry

Very nice! I would have to agree with everyone else, very smooth...

Did you happen to feel the earthquake on Friday morning? The epicentre was less than 10 km from home...Not the way I like to start my day however it gives us all something to talk about at work! LOL

Sjors: Thank-you!

When the time is there for the harvest, I'll put Anja on the plane

:D  :D :D

Steve: Thank-you as well! I didn't feel the earthquake, but several friends and family did. I was working outside and I guess I was just too focused on my work! It was a fairly 'big one' for our locale.

Make that x 2 - I agree with Popeye. The planking is a wonder and the finish is just beautiful. I would try to stain it first.

Thank-you Popeye and Paul! The deceiving thing about photos is that it's hard to discern the variety of wood. Yes, it turned out really smooth, but it's balsa wood, which would be too delicate if left as the only planking - as you can already imagine, it doesn't take stain very well either.

ohhhhhh!.......I see your point  ;)   the bad thing about balsa,  is that it's quite prone to dings and nicks.   yours is the first I've heard that used it in hull planking.......it is also quite flexable.   with my lobster boat,  they supply balsa panels for the planking.  not being used to this,  I made a holy 'ole mess of it.......so I planked it over........made for a great base,  it did!   another beauty of this wood,  is you really didn't add a whole lot of weight to the build.......could be a problem,  in the armor department though.  so,  you should be quick with the second planking or  'he who shall not be named'  and his cotton balls,  will make a mess of things........I'm surprised he didn't scope you out already  :0  LOL!!!

Wow...balsa.  It's ok as a base but Popeye is right, gotta cover it up or it will 'ding' immediately.  I'll keep the King of Cotton busy until you get on some timber!

Popeye and Augie: You're both exactly right - that is why I had already ordered walnut to cover and stiffen the hull. The plans call for balsa as the first planking, and I had some on hand....so....

I knew, before I started, that balsa is 'tricky' to work with, but it will keep the ship nice and light. I will have to use a little filler in a couple of spots where one of the bulkheads was a little short and caused a low spot. I thought I had everything faired well, but funny how the planking shows each little imperfection!

Yes, those imperfections pop right out.  Same as with fairing on a single plank setup.  You'll nail it.

Balsa is actually a great base to work over and is amazingly strong once it has an 'overlayer'.  Adds a lot of stiffness, which is a good thing.  Walnut is going to be fabulous.  Will make my basswood hull look like an orange crate!
