Timothy Wood Posted August 5, 2013 Author Share #186 Posted August 5, 2013 (edited) Greetings PT Boat fans, The half hull of the Endeavour has been completed and is now on the wall, the Admiral is happy! Now on to the next step for the 80" ELCO. After making the chart house to the correct length my next step was to construct the instrument panel and install the companionway block. The companionway block was glued to the instrument panel after the starboard part was cut away thus allowing for the addition of the companionway block. After the instrument panel and the companionway were dry my next step was to glue them to the chart house using wood glue. These were clamped and left to dry for 24 hours. After allowing the chart house and instrument panel to dry 24 hours, I proceeded to fill any small gaps with Elmer's Wood Filler. After allowing time to dry I sanded the smooth and they are ready for the 1/64" plywood windshield, shelf and cockpit bulkhead. I made a copy of the template just incase I had a slip of the hand while cutting them out, I look at it as cheap insurance. The splash shields are cut from 1/64" plywood, this is easily cut with a par of shears or a sharp X-ACTO knife. At this point the starboard chart house spray shield has been cut and set in place for a "test" fit. As you can see I have a little more work until the fit is correct. I've been around furniture wood a long, long time and without giving it any consideration, I thought it was maple also, or maybe beech. I was wondering how many blades you went through though. alross2 Posted December 8, 2013 Share #202 Posted December 8, 2013 I haven't built one of their kits either.......I do however, have an old kit of the PT-10, put out by marine Models back in the forties. Haven't done too much with solid hull.........I'm sure the techniques you've gone by, will be a good reference source. I love PT boats as well...it will be cool to watch yours grow. If you want to build an accurate model of PT 10, you might want to hold off on building the old MM kit - it isn't even close. I have looked at the kit though, enough to take stock of what is in the kit...it has the torpedo tubes, and the parts to make the gun towers. I do intend to build it as accurately as possible.....I have some photos from scale model magazine...........at the moment, it's about the only research I've done. I appreciate the link, but I can't get the pictures to scroll....I'm sure there are others. when I get around to build it, I will start a log on it.....I think it will be a lot of fun to do. we can chat more about it then. The plywood supplied for the spray shields, is paper thin and somewhat hard to work with. It took me three times of cutting, shaping, sanding and gluing to get them relatively close to correct. Up to this point they have been the toughest item to get right! I hope to get more work in now that I've figured out the best way to work with the plywood (Cut it with a pair of scissors).
