Happy with the Keel also, I'll be able to do a wee Rebate and slot the second cover in. I'll be using the Kit supplied 0.5mm Walnut. Already had a trial fitting and flows nicely around the curves. (As I think I mentioned in the past, this is my first "Bluff" Bow Ship model, more used to pointy Bow Ships.) Have a good rest of the weekend!! Cheers....HOF. I really don't think that there is a "Correct" method. What looks/feels good and looks good is the "Bomb." If I can give you some "Qdos/Encouragemet" I think that your work is that of an experienced Model Ship Wright!! (Don't doubt yourself!!) Your build is looking great!! I am also hoping for Rain!! Hi Harry, Lucky you having 2 layers of planks...she's looking good It looks like you're doing a great job smoothing out the first layer. Just one thought, .5 mm thickness on the second layer doesn't give you much room for sanding. Ill use the adhesive on the plank and "Steam" on with a little judicious heat from my trusty Plank Bender. Sanding this stuff has proved no problem in the past as it's nice and hard, so, takes a lot of sanding to cut through!! Yup, am indeed lucky that it's double Planked.... Had a chat to Boyd last night, he did warn me that 0.5mm was getting pretty thin, especially after a bit of a san!! Anyway, about 1/2 is done and I must think about Drop Planks at the Bow as things are going to start bunching up. Used CA for each Plank at the Bow, Aliphatic Resin, (Sandable PVA), heated with my Plank Bender thingy. The glue boils and sets in seconds. The only issue is that it "Erupts" and makes a bit of a mess on the Planks previously laid. A bit of masking tape resolves this and 180 Grit paper sends the Dross packing!! NZ Holiday Monday, Waitangi Day, so should be able to get more done.... Anyway, Photos.... "Prototyped" Bill Boards or as A/L call them, "Anchor Linings." Had a look at the positions of the Mast Holes, I am a little concerned as the Sheer Plan is a little inaccurate and comparing to the "Full size" photos that constitute the Pan and side views, it is even more confusing, so maybe someone can enlighten me? It's all a bit of "Guesstimation" with this kit. Been having a look at the various hatches, etc I think I'll stay with the metal ones supplied, maybe a touch of paint if necessary. I think the idea is to rebate them into the Hull in their various positions. I'll look at these after I get some Sanding Sealer/Paint on the Hull. I'll try to get some photos uploaded next weekend. Rather embarrassingly, I managed to "Cut Through" some of this at the Bow and unfortunately in between the Channels and Whales that will be left wood, not painted. So, I have now Triple Planked above the Channels and down to the Whales, below the Whales is o.k. Lesson learnt, sand more slowly and choose the Grit more carefully!! (Should have listened to Boyd!!) The Hull thus far has certainly given me a few "Curve Balls." Does anyone know an accurate location on the Deck for Stepping the Masts? (I am not 100% confident on the accuracy of the Sheer Plan or "Photos" that are supposed to be "Plan Like.") That's me for the mo. Cheers....HOF. I did mine by looking at the pics of the replica and marking it out the best I could. I think it came up fairly close but its too hard to do properly without actually standing on the deck. Anyway I'm the ship master and builder and I like it as it is. I noticed that you have that decking topic, in the card model section, it might be a bit hard to attract attention there, but you have had a few replies. One thing I did find today is find this pdf I don't know if it has been put up at MSW before. A lot of work to do that, but if it is really bugging you then I found the best idea is to just get on with and enjoy doing it. O.k. the Hull is looking really good but I'm not happy with the Deck, at all. Sanded away, trying to make things perfect but created far more problems, cut through the deck in a few places, and, where I didn't, the Decking is so thin that it's translucent, the Ply underneath shows, not good at all.+ Thanks for your input Chris, yup, got some assistance with "Paper" Decking, (Thanks RichardG, it was worth a crack!!), played around with this but, no go really. Am aware that there is going to be a bit of work re-doing the Deck at this stage but am up for it!! Spoke to Boyd, (Thomaslambo), who is sending me some Decking that he didn't use on his Bounty, Thanks Boyd!! (Just calling out your assistance!!) Also bought a Proxxon Pen Sander/Power supply which should make removal of the old Decking a little easier. I'll post some photos later. Cheers....HOF. Yeah, sandpaper is pretty dangerous stuff in my hands, it doesn't seem to take too much to go through a plank. Would you need to take all the old deck off? Just sand it back to a good surface, and plank over the top. It looks like it will be worth the effort. What sort of glue are you using? When i did mine i used a fast setting Sellys white pva, i would put it on, then clean off the excess glue, and keep an eye on it while it was setting to make sure it stayed down. If it needed pushing down, the glue would grab if it wasn't dry. While I was doing that i would get the next one ready. The glue usually set in about 5 mins. Not happy with the Deck but time will tell, so far, the replacement is not too bad but plenty more to go. (Had to make a start!!) Fore and Quarter Deck first, Poop maybe.
