HMB Endeavour 1768 by Cabbie - Artesania Latina - 1:60 - Kit Fiddle

Recommended Posts

HI Ian and Dave thanks for looking in and the likes.

You really want me to suffer don't you, Dave

At this stage I am all chicken and not treenailing,

a lot of those planks are only 3.5mm wide and less

and i don,t know if I will do it well enough, but will take

another look at it later.

Next i am marking all the ports, channels and other bits

before 2nd planking. Its a kink I have I have to plan it out before

I start and I want to make the spaces for ports as I go.

Though how the little ones that are only 3.2mm X 6.4mm will look I don't know.

Cheers Chris

Hi Pat

I haven't done the deck planks, I'm thinking that I will leave them as well.

The Jarrah on the hull will go fairly dark when varnished, and I don't

know if the treenailing will show up that much, for

something that will be a lot of work.

Besides I like how it looks now (that's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Thanks Chris

Second planking????  You're going to cover up what you've done?  Or did I miss something?   Looking very good, Chris.

Good evening mark

Not too sure what 2nd planking you are thinking of.

I am going to put a second layer above the wales,

there are some ugly gaps in the 1st layer and

because i have caulked I can't fill them, wouldn't look right.

We were talking treenailing above and I

don't know if it is a worth while exercise and whether

I would do a good enough job of it.

Cheers Chris

Hi Chap,

How are things?

I'm taking a wee time to think about the Endeavour.

Have completed second planking, Hull, but have managed to "Cut Throughh" a portion of the Fore Deck Planking.

Unsure if I'll try to Re-Do this as I am worried that I might make a bad si9tuation worse.

Maybe covering the error with "Cargo?'"

Couple of Barrels/Casks and Cases wrapped up in a Net?

We'll see I guess.

I must admit, this is the most frustrating build ever!!

Cheers Ears!!

Howdy Hof

I have been plodding along a bit, time has been a bit of a battle,

as well as the planking. But others seem to think that once you get past it

the fun things start to happen

I think that sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves, to get things

done and to do it at a certain standard, and that takes the fun out of it.

So I decided a while back just to let it happen as it does, and that

it will finish as it does. Though I will keep looking to learn, and improve the skills.

I had to replace some bow planks that I sanded through,

It was probably worse thinking about, than actually doing it.

But on the deck a bit of well placed cargo might do the job for you.

Someone around here has a saying that if you treat each little part

as model itself, you will do thousands of models, that is what

I am doing now taking it bit by bit and not looking at the bigger picture too much.

Enough talk, a couple of pics of where I'm up to.

Its a bit hard to see the 2nd layer Kauri planks,

but trust me they are there.

Thanks Pat,

Yes very nice to work with, soaks and bends easy.

It is a bit dull at the moment, but with some poly later

it will come up very nice.

Hey Chris, she is looking real nice. You have made some nice choices with your wood and as Ian says once the poly is on she will look real sweet.

I have had enough of this!!!

Fiddling around on this hull,

Just finish it boy, and put some poly on it.

That's what I told myself, so I did.

Time to move on and do something else.

There are as usual a few things not quite right, some little things to

fix up. And as usual a sanded through plank to replace, but ah well

that appears to be the norm around here.

That's looking really good mate; the use od painting with timber, especially for the brown stuff is quite effective.

Good Afternoon All

Thanks for the looks and likes, it was a lot of

work, but very worthwhile.

Hi pat, I'm really only doing all timber because I hate painting,

and I like the look of timber much better.

Thanks Don, a little bit of enjoyment is allowed, but I want to get on with it.

Sorting out the stern next, how I want it to look, and in particular the windows.

Time for a little bit of experimenting. Hooroo Chris

Good Evening all

Slow business this model ship building hobby, but good.

I have been working on the stern, and starting the windows.

First I part planked the plywood stern piece.

The jamb strips are Sapele from the kit, a bit

darker than the Jarrah. Hopefully the sapele will give a shadow effect to the frame

I soaked them and placed in window openings

until dry, then then cut some 1.25mm x .5 kauri strips and soaked and bent for

the window sashes, and glued them together to make it up to 1mm.

Then I fixed the assembly in place, and

finished the planking.

Next is to make the double cross glazing bars.

Then I need to decide what to do instead of glass,

painting it in black seems to be one idea, which probably

appeals to me (simpler). Any one got any ideas?

Cheers Chris

Chris I used liquid gloss (two part) which you can get at Spotlight (i think they still have it).  Are you doing the central one as a 'false window'? - http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/400-hmb-endeavour-by-banyan-al-160-circa-1768/?p=4039

Hi Pat

Thanks for the info on the liquid gloss, should do the job.

i am going to put a frame, and no glazing bars in the middle one,

just to define it a bit, and put jarrah planking in.

Thanks Chris

Nice work Chap!!

Am waiting on My Deck stuff before I move on, and, when I do, it will be getting the Deck as good as I can.

(I do intend to completely remove the old deck material, and yes, at this stage it's going to be "Interesting.")

Apologies, not talking about the Liquid Gloss, but filling you in on the build across the Ditch!! :)

(Hopefully not out of line.)

Cheers....HOF.

Hi Hof

Good to see you looking in.

"Interesting"    Nah, it will be fun!!!  All a good learning experience.

Looks like tricky stuff the liquid gloss, trying to get it in the right spot,

and not all over the woodwork.

Work on the ship has being going at, slow crawl, speed,at the moment,

glued the arched pieces for the windows last night, do some more tonight I hope.

How is the weather over there, it has been very dry here and everyone

is waiting for the autumn break. Our block has turned to almost total dust now.

I think that the grass has packed it in and has decided not to grow anymore.

Hopefuly La Nina is on the way and will give us a wet year.

Not sure, what might be out of line, but all is good.

Hi Scott Thanks for looking in

Me neither, painting is not something I like doing.

At this stage I don't think that I will paint anything.

I am going use some of the walnut that came with the kit, masts, yards ect,

and put a jarrah stain on them. It should go quite dark

and provide some contrast in the finishes.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chap,

Yup, Interested to have a look-see, wot you are up to.

Paint? I'll do this so long as the Deck turns out o.k. I like the look of the Freemantle Replica.

The weather? El Nino is holding sway at the mo. The longest and hottest Summer that I can remember since I was very young.

(I was 7 years old in Eastbourne, Wellington when the Wahinie went down, most of the 53 passengers lost their lives being "Blown" across  the Harbour from West to East, Cargo moved, (Being a Roll On - Off Ferry,) Foundered on Barrets Reef at the entrace to Wellington Harbour and ended up on her side, half submerged. For years, there was a Boy we Called "Moaning Minnie" to warn of the wreck while salvours did their stuff.

(Very firmly in my mind, cannot forget that day), Cyclone Giselle. 48 Years ago on April 10th this year.)

The prevailing wind used to be from the South for many years but now m

ore Northerly.

Is the weather changing? I am firmly of the opinion that it is.

(Not at all out of line Chap, administrators can be the judge.)

I live in the Bush so pretty much always Green.

Grandstanding perhaps: Carbon Credits/Trading are a little bit of "Lip Service."

Anyway, as soon as I get my Decking replacement from Boyd, (Thanks Boyd), I'll be into it once again!!

ANZAC Day Monday, Have an extra day off and remember the Fallen.

(I don't think there is an "Emoticon" for this.)

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

Hi Chris,

Nice, really nice work on the planking.

No painting below the wales, I didn't on mine, comes up good with clear and shows the those joints that took so long to 'cut in'.

Keep up the great work.

Hey Dave, dead right, since I don't like painting, I have to make sure the work is good

enough not to need paint. And after doing all that work, you definitely don't want

to cover it up.

I am experimenting on my version of the stern windows and glass at the moment.

It will be good to see how it ends up looking.

Cheers Chris
