marktiedens #482 Posted June 21, 2017 Thanks Pete - I am using a run of the mill 100W soldering gun. Just being very careful. My only problem was I crushed a couple of deadeyes while forming the wire around them. I have extras,so no big deal. marktiedens #483 Posted July 7, 2017 Hi everyone, another overdue update. All the topmast shrouds are now done. The camera is brutal, but they look ok from a foot away. I have also started doing some of the ratlines for a change of pace. Cow hitches were used on the end shrouds, with clove hitches on all the others. This may take some time............... piratepete007 #492 Posted July 9, 2017 Mark, you have received many well-deserved comments and Ken is right about your detailed work. There are easier ways to do the ratting BUT your method (i.e. your knots) is producing work that draws the observer's eyes straight to the rigging. So, its a well done from me as well ! Its a tricky one but the idealistic way of doing ratting is to have the ratlines perfectly straight but in reality, the lines would be far from being a straight line. So on that point also, well done. Two questions ... 1. What method are you using to ensure uniform spacing between the ratlines ? 2. Are you fixing the knots with glue to hold them in place ? marktiedens #493 Posted July 9, 2017 Thanks Pete - I actually try to have a slight sag in the ratlines between the individual shrouds. To answer your questions - 1.only my eyes - I have done so many ratlines in the past that I have gotten fairly good at it 2.I am using diluted Elmer`s white glue on the knots - about a 70 to 30 glue to water ratio. Any thinner than that & the knots will not stay put. It`s still thin enough to disappear when dry. popeye the sailor #494 Posted July 13, 2017 shrouds look great! really like the way you have them terminated and spaced. good luck with the ratlines.....I agree about the sag.......after all, the shrouds are adjustable and they need the extra room to move {in real application, of course}. 5 Greg the peg leg sailor, marktiedens, md1400cs and 2 others reacted to this

marktiedens #496 Posted July 22, 2017 Update - all lower shrouds are now ratted. I will probably get the topgallant shrouds installed next to take a break from tying all those knots. 6 GrantGoodale, donrobinson, coxswain and 3 others reacted to this
piratepete007 #497 Posted July 22, 2017 Mark, Exhausting work with all that ratting but you must be able to sit there and take a great deal of satisfaction and pride in what you have done. marktiedens #498 Posted July 22, 2017 Thanks Pete - as I go upwards the shrouds get smaller & closer together, testing my eyes & patience. Mark 2 coxswain and donrobinson reacted to this
marktiedens #499 Posted July 27, 2017 A little update - I was unhappy with the ratlines - line is a little too large & many of the knots did not look so good - especially near the top of the shrouds where they are very close together,so off they came. I am re-doing them with smaller line - about .018 inch. The clove hitches are now much tighter & neater looking as you can see in the picture. Gotta love re-do`s. Greg the peg leg sailor #500 Posted July 30, 2017 G'day Mark Your eyes for details would be the death of you my mate. 😁😆 But I can see now that you are correct, but I must admit that it takes a very brave, or a person whom like punishment, to redo those rats. The result shows that you are 110% correct. Bloody brilliant job mate Greg 5 ken3335, marktiedens, coxswain and 2 others reacted to this

piratepete007 #503 Posted August 5, 2017 Mark, What a champion effort - to have completed the ratlines, taken them off and redone them sounds like a nightmare but the end result is magnificent and one that puts your mind at ease.
