Update guys! We’ve just had a long weekend here in Australia and I managed to get a couple of things done this weekend and the preceding couple of weeks...so here’s what I’ve done guys 😁

It represented a milestone for me...after about 12 months of solid modeling, reading and folding these back up I could finally move on to next set of instructions 😃!  A81733B0-BB5C-472D-846E-B12DEAD11CEE.thumb.jpeg.681ae7fa41221a4af77d986d242ed14d.jpeg next installed the mid belay pins , the windlass...and then the stairs down below to the false deck3673A8AC-1FC8-4C2F-8242-0E19B854A004.thumb.png.8cbc57113d3b8c073e50751f54aed2a3.pngA81733B0-BB5C-472D-846E-B12DEAD11CEE.thumb.jpeg.681ae7fa41221a4af77d986d242ed14d.jpegB8CBDD8A-8806-4EB9-9CD3-02EA97D08F65.thumb.jpeg.530b4ebf799aa044c2aa8178a38c2fa4.jpegthen installed more gratings. And here’s a body shot of the bounty, with my little helper not asleep for once! 44AD3FB8-B4B2-41E6-8DB7-8A1D73361947.thumb.jpeg.6d0d42a59e5041e44814115afe33b344.jpeg1F171297-D3F0-44C3-859F-1C942DB3B748.thumb.jpeg.3ef15337d16810215a7220b0a8ba8a01.jpeg

Next was the metal parts for the bow...it was quite challenging...nerve wrecking too. The parts were very brittle...image.thumb.jpg.3c7f4136e9a8f7cafe308786e71d8bdc.jpg

I’ll have another crack later. 6770EB9F-3D71-4A2B-9FA3-5D5765F928C9.thumb.jpeg.0ce15af3bae1c07d63e8aa8e3e306d8f.jpeg did the side windows next...i was much happier with how these ones turned out.E69A5095-179F-4B00-ADBF-4AB7F98C09BF.thumb.jpeg.89fbfbb012c236518e6eecd029b00c55.jpegNext I did the supports for all 10 culverins as can be seen in my non chronological photos 😐...and then finally the mid hand rails...got one to go still. But once that one is done I’ll just have cannons and then be about ready to get stuck into the rigging! I can’t wait!

Thanks Fernando! I just did a search and found your Norfolk build! :D I’m glad I did! it’s a beautiful clean build.  Also learned I can source brass blackening chemical from my local gun shop!

When are you starting your Endeavor? Or any other build? :pirate41:

Hi Vinnie, funny you should ask but was about to start a build log for a fishing vessel which has had a very long gestation period....watch this space!

Hi Vinnie, just returned home after a month in UK and now catching up.  Great work and so quick!!  You must spend a lot of time on it but it is clearly paying off, nice one.

Thanks leginseel...your right things have been moving along...working full time only allows an hour or 2 a day...but it relaxes me after a day at work so I rarely miss it.:dancetl6:

But I have recently decided to “hit the anchors” just a little bit the last couple of days. After some honest reflection on some of the photos I have taken. I realized that the furniture and fittings on my model looks dirty/fuzzy under the flash of my camera. I initially thought this was because of the linseed oil being ever so slightly sticky. But it isn’t...I’ve discovered that I haven’t done a good enough sanding job. I’ve needed to use progressively finer sand papers (which is probably a now brainer for some of the better modelers on here) so yea just slowing down a little bit and getting at the furniture with a small stick sander before I block off access with masts and rigging 😁 will post some before and after photos probably

I’m looking forward to seeing you get stuck back into your Bounty leginseel!

So got an update guys...although I really feel like I should have more done by the amount of time it’s been. The last few weeks however have been mostly research and gathering together a couple of tools and techniques to try and improve the quality of my model. I’ve ordered a serving machine and am looking forward to incorporating that into my build. I’ve also ordered some blocks from Syren model ships. From the pictures I’ve seen they look second to none. I’m hoping to be able to do my Bounty with them. But because of stock issues I’ve only been able to order 1, 2 and 3 hole 4 mm blocks and I need many other varieties. So I’m hoping I can find enough patience and tasks for my keen hands until I can get ahold of some more, because I don’t want to do half of the Mamoli blocks and half syren blocks...it will be one or the other...I’ll decide soon. 1A78222E-9670-4CA2-88B3-6AADB5F4A6DA.thumb.jpeg.9faccbe1f0c02458839447ea84c9d19e.jpegB9136ADB-A52A-434B-9F27-AF5B1FEED68F.thumb.jpeg.f4d8b037d9bb349ff80bc3a996c7f37a.jpeg

so firstly I rigged up the canons and fit them. (My bad photo habits mean that most of the photos are out of chronological order 😩) BA92F728-8AD1-48AC-98EF-00C729B394B0.thumb.jpeg.86f40bf507b414d02a8f22beac1df080.jpegB56CC96C-1CA3-43EF-843C-78D084452B0D.thumb.jpeg.70d5bc5de8936c889a8c62791fa5b672.jpeg165FB2C0-DEA6-4247-8407-42DDDFEAC237.thumb.jpeg.3da016c14c21fa903e5a34fb433f4555.jpeg

then i started construction on the masts and bowsprit. I stained the dowls walnut. At this stage they are only dry fitted. I want to make it easier for lashing shrouds and blocks ect. I’ll glue them at the last possible moment...596F4C47-108A-458A-B33B-51E0E84071EE.thumb.jpeg.6e736f4ac68e060befbea3de0c3ede4f.jpeg5647A1F1-0EE6-4892-9AD2-C0B682A75E24.thumb.jpeg.d721c52bcffea008b999cd5ba770368e.jpeg48CD5726-61AE-482A-A3D3-7D5AF4C5362C.thumb.jpeg.a2aa865813a86061e2da308092e14e37.jpeg

as stated I purchased a serving machine. I’m looking forward to using it when I start the shrouds. However I’m trying to stay patient to wait for blocks to get here so I don’t block off access to the deck and make it a nightmare to get blocks onto the deck. Anyway I couldn’t help myself and I had to give it a try. I’m very happy with the results. I used quilting thread to serve this fawn colored rope to see how well it came out.4528E8D0-EB10-4092-A113-9BECE6843C5F.thumb.jpeg.7bfa5c781b6aca4fc2e8d4db275e22f9.jpegand then finally today I scratched together all my painting materials and put some color on the figurehead for my ship 😁

Hopefully I next time I post I’ll have some syren blocks on my deck and shrouds running everywhere! ...well from the mast to the channel...hopefully 😬

Hi Vinnie...and good to see you are back in the shipyard.

I am keen to buy the Syren blocks as well as the rope (ready made stuff) as it looks fantastic and has been recommended by a few builders on this site. I'm due to finish my brothers Santa Lucia in the next couple of weeks and will start  on the Modellers Central Perseverance soon after.

Nice work on the cannons and the rope coils....how did you get them so neat and tidy?

Cheers..........Fernando

Hey Fernando...I will be catching up on your Santa Lucia progress soon😁

Yes I cant wait for my syren blocks to get here to try some out!

As regards the rope coils I’m glad u like them 😊...basically i just turned some low tack tape upside down (sticky side up) used some tweezers to coil them onto the tape into a shape I was happy with. Once I was happy I got a little bit of wood glue and put some over all the coiled rope. Once it dries it just needs to be peeled off with tweezers and all done! :dancetl6:

If u have any more questions let me know...I can send you some pics of the tape I use if you like too 😬

So...update on where things are at. After many hours of research and experimenting with techniques things are now starting to move along. Hopefully from this point on I’ll be able to keep the updates coming a bit thicker and faster.

Firstly I got to use my new serving machine on the bowsprit shrouds...

and also fit a bobstay.D21484CC-EEB0-47AE-92A0-9E86CD693845.thumb.jpeg.4dc0dc6d8ef33d6c45793e5a269fd632.jpeg

I replaced all the tiller rigging with the syren blocks that I’ve received... they come up much nicer...

old blocks...

Next fit the foremast...in order to get the correct degree slant on the mast I thought a jig would be the most practical and straight forward way to go. This simple jig is just a rubber band and a carefully carved piece of timber.

Next started rigging the shrouds. I went and did the apparently authentic throat seizing...unfortunately once the lanyards were attached you can hardly tell :(

Next did the catharpins...a very painstaking job...but I’m fairly happy with how it came out...The top is a bit of a mess at the moment...

And a nice lil persons eye view of the deck! 2949956E-3EF1-4E34-BA17-C93FC53CD4B6.thumb.jpeg.28f40aecf445e34ddc8e5378f8ec7f40.jpeg

...so much to do...hopefully will have another update shortly...

Glad to see your back in the shipyard. The rigging is looking good and those blocks are much better than the kit blocks!

Look forward to more updates.

Hello mates! Again over due for an update! The last few weeks having hectic and events have run away...in the time since my last post I went down to Sydney and visited the Endeavor replica and the James Craig...thoroughly enjoyed myself. And then went on an ocean cruise to the pacific islands. Again...had another nautically themed great time 😁...the admiral apparently enjoyed the cruise more though.

099482FC-F21A-420C-B959-217267287576.thumb.jpeg.383c956cf9d3f77539674e5ee934c9f6.jpegThis is how she looks from afar...

So, up has gone the main and mizzenmast. Then attached the shrouds then attached the the catharpins as a bit more detail...a pretty simple story really. But I time consuming one also... 1044E6CB-EB6D-43C1-9B8D-05EEA0A500BC.thumb.jpeg.9c062e27df5ff791772f6791d7b52385.jpegother than that all I can say else that I’ve done is blacken some nails on the deadeye chains A0EC0641-C160-4CBF-8A35-0723F0A9142D.thumb.jpeg.1a6cd9acca4cf1cd9f06ef36a9f8c0be.jpegand attach blocks, blocks...and more, you guessed it...blocks! 448CE0F5-3ECA-4BA1-95D5-225F32CCCF9E.thumb.jpeg.b0f798be92d81b259be0f353c405b8fa.jpeg245ED9DF-5E01-47C6-91B7-CB8D800D5DE3.thumb.jpeg.0995bd10d54dbe0c26fc6edf6f43b74f.jpegCan also see in this above photo the results of my serving machine! :) B1013692-3738-4859-8273-F82E5FAC9B79.thumb.jpeg.6a265e765a94d75546abfd09c1a45519.jpeg29B85418-ECE4-4894-B601-22B8FE3916A8.thumb.jpeg.5061bdb1c473450191e6ab736c904e83.jpegAnd if you spot the difference from my last lot of photos...the Bounty launch is gone. I thought it was a tad ugly. Needed some touch up and maybe a second launch also. Anyway...orderd some 🚣  from modelers central...will see how I go!

Next onto onto some various other blocks. And then some futtock shrouds...can’t wait to get stuck into them! Hopefully I’ll post photos of them soon! 😁

Looking forward to any constructive criticism or comments!

Hi Vinnie and Welcome back from your holiday!

Your model is coming along nicely, those blocks look good as well as the rigging. The wood finish also looks beautiful....well done!

Did you get a ride on the James Craig? It's a great looking vessel and is part of the Sydney Heritage Fleet (not part of the NMM). I'm a member of the fleet and helping restoring a 106 year old Sydney Ferry. Lots of work to be done and will take another 10 years or so before she ready to again take on fare paying passengers but a great way to spend some spare time....sanding, painting, scraping woodworking etc.....a nice distraction from small model boat building😎

Cheers................Fernando

Thanks Fernando 😁 I’m glad you like the timbers. And the blocks...I’m glad I went through and got them.

Unfortunately I was there on a Saturday and it supposedly most goes out on Sunday...oh well I have it as a goal to be on a square rigger with the sheets spread one day!

Wow id love to see pics of this restoration Fernando! What hard yet satisfying work that would be 😊

Hi Vinnie

Had another day on the Kanangra Ferry today and here are a couple of photos to show you where we are at. As you can see there is still a lot of restoration work to be done on it (and we haven't even started on the engines yet). At least it will keep me occupied well into retirement!

Hello folks! 👋...it’s been a while since I’ve show you all where I’m at. I’ve been going slowly but steadily and here’s where things are. All the shrouds are finally done! I’m fairly happy with the results...A8D8A61C-AA28-4F58-9296-CE9E1F24C0A7.thumb.jpeg.c1e030687b9a4fb89b4053943a6f5ecb.jpeg5A033DB4-503C-4B00-B964-01B7E4B9B640.thumb.jpeg.9fc8f28beecf950947db12c29a1263c1.jpeg24D26855-C14E-40F6-A8C2-B45EB02E491C.thumb.jpeg.7d57bce6bd2abc64f45648bcd54a5281.jpeg5821B8D8-1FED-4A06-B33D-C37FDC550CEE.thumb.jpeg.af96749d6d7582115ac5b3bf6aa97af4.jpeg

i wasn’t happy with the bobstays and shrouds at the bow. So I re-did them with some thicker rope. And I’m happier with the result...it’s hard to get a picture that shows them up 😕 75EA62F4-261F-4AF0-9471-97DC196F35E9.thumb.jpeg.fb7c6155907eee26252bab9cb14e703f.jpegF6C0C048-D740-431E-B2AB-C8CEEC79FF11.thumb.jpeg.9489a2f960b3f9506dbac674ed53025e.jpegin this last pic if you can spot the looped rope that goes around the fore mast it’s the start of my first stay 😁C358A92B-4642-4414-A253-9E333E0FDD15.thumb.jpeg.fdc8344388b7ac362a2b0df1c115a61c.jpegA2562699-8018-41CA-AC7F-497EEE646D8C.thumb.jpeg.c617f1d14e2f9c98b57563fd2cf51082.jpeg300BEDAB-BC42-40F6-BD78-D32C0E03B4F3.thumb.jpeg.d3d0fce1998ba99b213288969a29c0dd.jpegand here’s my first crack at a weaved mouse...pretty enjoyable to make except for the shaping of the little wood piece that the weaving goes over. In short it was fiddly agony to shape 😡.  Oh well only 9 more to go!!! Would love any constructive critiques people 😊

Hello Vinnie and welcome back.

She's coming along very nicely indeed. I've never done a weaved mouse before but yours looked pretty good to me. I'm no doubt going to get some lots of practice when I start my Endeavour build some time in the new year.

Cheers...............Fernando

About the NRG

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model shipcraft.

The Nautical Research Guild puts on ship modeling seminars, yearly conferences, and juried competitions. We publish books on ship modeling techniques as well as our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, whose pages are full of articles by master ship modelers who show you how they build those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you what details to build.
