I have a silly question. You worked 10 years on this...how does it feel now you finished it?

I never worked that long (not even close!) on a model and I can imagine it must be a strange feeling to put it aside now.

Hi,

Just a question about the "gunports".

I also wrote to billings, but it does not look like they are going to answer.

When I look at the drawing of billings it looks like they have not made gunports, just glued the plastic gunport surrounds on the hull and then drilled a hole in the hull for the guns and maybe just found the piece inside in black to have? 

But it seems like you have made gunports in the hull. If so, how did you fix the guns?

Do you also know what the real color was of the hull below the waterline? It also seems as if the waterline is very low on the drawing, this is correct. If so, I am not surprised that it sank so easily, even if it had not already had the extra cannons on board.

I made holes in the hull and then glued the gunport surrounds into these holes. Then they are sanded flat with the hull.

Ik maakte gaten in de romp en kleefde daar de kanonpoorten in. Daarna zijn deze mee vlak geschuurd met de romp.

 

I glued pieces of wood behind the gunports. This method proved to be very cumbersome. 

Gluing pieces of plywood between the frames is much easier, and paint the inside black. You can find this method in several logs.k

Ik lijmde houten blokjes achter de kanonpoorten, deze methode is zeer onhandig.

Lijm stukken triplex tussen de spanten en schilder deze zwart. Je vind deze methode beschreven in verschillende bouwlogs.

 

Normally under the waterline, the color is white.

Normaal is de kleur onder waterlijn wit

One of the reasons why the Vasa sank so quickly was too little depth.

Eén van de redenen waarom de Vasa zonk was te weinig diepgang.

Thanks, When I still lived in Cape Town I was a member of the local model ship society there. They suggested an off white color called barley white as the right color for below the waterline.

Fine master craftsmanship! I have this kit also and will hopefully start it in a couple of years, with your build blog will be a lot easier to fine detail it out with the research I have on her.

If you have the time a couple of questions:

Why did you use white for the rigging?

Which colors did you use and what manufacturer makes them?

What wood oil or stains did you work with?

 

I'll be working on the CSS Mananas next then to my older Mantua La Couronne that has the eight cannons for the stern. The I'll tackle the Vasa, so your info is very important for my research on her and I wish to thank you for your time.

• A stupid beginners mistake  (I got this kit for free (but without rigging) and had to improvise

Which colors did you use and what manufacturer makes them?

• Tamiya matte colors

What wood oil or stains did you work with?

• matte varnish, the color is old oak

Thank you, I thought maybe you had found research on her that she actually had all white. She is still a beauty! I have white, black and tan with dark brown from Billings, Mantua and Corel along with cottage industries rope. I also as I am sure you have, the images from the museum of their model to do the rigging colors the same when I start her. I find a lot of rigging lots on Ebay for rope also at cheap prices too, and scoff them up.

Your build is fantastic! great job no matter how long it took. On the white rigging and sails try using a strong mixture of tea placed in spray bottle and spray a fine mixture on the sails and rigging while wiping dry the exposed wood. the Tannen in the tea will darken the sails and rigging enough to allow a great build to shine. I have used tea in this manner to color/darken sails with no ill effect on the material.

I cannot recommend the tea treatment because of the tannen.  Tannen will cause deteriation of the fibers.  Instead, use an oil based stain, perhaps diluted 20% .     Duff

I had actually already thought about doing this.
Perhaps with diluted paint (tamiya colors diluted with water / isopropanol) dont now yet.

But before I do anything about this
I first have to try this out on some leftovers  from the rigging.

Hi Patrick, the diluted Tamiya paint will work well on the lines that are already rigged.  Dilute it with rubbing alcohol about 1/3 alcohol.  

 

I had tried the Tamiya on lines before rigging them on the model but found the line too stiff, but found the Minwax{R} oil stains worked well.

Perhaps, but its been over 15 years since I applied the tea solution and have yet to see any ill effects!

Today a major event. The very last update

Sold the Vasa model due to lack of space in the hobby room (And once a ship model is finished, I lose my interest in it)

This model was a very educational experience.
Had a lot of fun , and even made money on it.
 

Maybe one day I'll build a second Vasa in scratch.

Hello Backer. I looked back a few years at your Wasa build. Beautiful job. Very impressive. I just opened the Airfix 1/144 scale Wasa. I am planning my painting scheme. I really like the detail you put in the ornamentation instead of painting all of it a solid metallic color. Mine is a much smaller scale and the figures are very small but I think I am going to try to copy some of your art work. Hope you do mind. I truly mean it as a compliment.

But what happened to rigging?

What happened to riging colors?.. in this colors , it looks like as it was taken from other model... hull and spars stained , but why rigging left white??? ...

in my opinion it is very strange choice and discard all image of that briliant made model!

Hello Backer,  what scale was your Wasa build?  I went back and fully read your build blog. Almost considering printing it out complete with the pictures. Like so many things you did! Techniques like how you painted the anchors are impressive. 
BTW early in the post I understand you are, or were, in Belgium?  Spent a lot of time there in Jurbise and Mons a number of years ago. Drank my fare share of Grimbergen as well as a number of other fine Belgium brews!

My Wasa is 1/144 scale. So I am guessing about half the size?
